Hi everyone

I can't seem to get the virtual server setup to work. Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction. I have tried to set it up the best I could by using common sense, reading the manual and looking through the forums. However, it still doesn't go.

My current setup is like this (set up for testing purposes):
- on my desktop, I have a web server on port 80 and FTP on port 21
- WL500g Virtual servers is enabled and set up with two sets of local ip of my desktop and port range and local port set to 80 and 21 respectively. Protocol is set to "BOTH", but I have also tried TCP.

I mean, how hard can it be? This should be enough, right? Am I perhaps testing wrong? I'm trying to access the machine by going to the WAN IP address of the WL500g. I know I can this stuff good enough, but it still won't work...

Thanks guys

Edit: Forgot my firmware version:
Product ID: WL500g
Firmware Version: 1.9.2.7
Firmware Release: 1.9.2.7-6b

Has anyone any clue on this? Sorry for spam.

I assume you disabled USB > FTP application and enabled virtual server?

Usually this shouldn't be a problem. Could you post screens of the necessary steps (virtual server settings)?

Thanks for reply, Jethro.

Just curious, why does USB / FTP have to be disabled? It is disabled here, but I wasn't aware of it having to be.

Btw, port trigger is disabled, I don't suppose this should be enabled.

I'm attaching image of Virtual Server settings

Because it uses the same port (21) as you want.

True.

According to this setup you have a client in your LAN on IP 172.25.120.74 which is running an FTP server on port 250, and a webserver on port 80. I don't know why port 101 and 5000 on the router are mapped to port 81 of you LAN machine.

I am assuming that you are using a fixed IP for this machine and that your router has an IP of 172.25.120.1. Can you give me more information about what you tried already and what the error messages were you received?

Disregard the mappings of ports 101 and 5000, those were just there for testing purposes and are removed.

IP 172.25.120.74 is my desktop, on which I'm running both FTP and WWW. The IP is not fixed, for some reason the routers DHCP didn't start at .2 when giving out IPs, but seems to assign different machines with random IPs. That said, it does not give my desktop different IPs every time, it's always been .74.

You assume correctly that router has an IP of 172.25.120.1

What I want to achieve first is to run a WWW service (already running on port 80 on desktop) and be able to get to it from WAN. LAN access is already there, but when trying from outside, it just times out.

You could check every setting over and over again, but sometimes it is just wiser to reset to defaults and start over again.

Things I can think of that could disrupt your plans at this moment are:
- a misconfigured WAN to LAN Filter (do not use this for your purposes))
- a misconfigured DMZ (do not use this for your purposes)
- a misconfigured static route (do not use for your purposes)
- you did not set your device in the right mode (should be gateway)
- finally, did you set Respond LPR Request from WAN? and Respond Ping Request from WAN? to YES?

Jethro:

WAN to LAN - Disabled
DMZ (I presume Virtual DMZ) - Never touched it
IP Config - Route - Disabled ("Apply to routing table?" set to "NO" and no setting in the section)
Operation Mode - set to "Home Gateway"

Your last question - negative! I adjusted this and rebooted router. Still no access from WAN

At this point I would get really mad if it were my router and I would choose between:

- smashing the thing against the wall
- resetting it to factory defaults and try again with a fresh start

I propose you do the last.

PS: What firmware do you use?

I know...

I guess I can save the settings to a config file, reset and try again. If it doesn't work, there is always restore settings option.

Firmware is mentioned at the bottom of my first post.

Ok, I've done a reset to factory defaults.

Changed SSID, password and then set up one line in Virtual Servers pointing port 80 to port 80 on my desktop IP. Still nothing.

Please guide me assuming everything else is on factory defaults.

I hope you are not trying to point to your WAN interface from within your LAN? What is the address of the website?

The only thing I set up was incomming port 80 to redirect to port 80 of my desktop IP.

My WAN ip is 80.111.238.173, so you should be getting something at http://80.111.238.173

I also put in incomming port 101 to redirect to port 80 of my desktop, just in case my ISP blocked traffic on port 80 (of which I'm not sure). So one can also test http://80.111.238.173:101

Edit: Server is up, but not accessible. Help!

It's Chello that is blocking port 80 I guess... Through 101 I could enter your site:

Welcome to Abyss Web Server
Abyss Web Server is running correctly on your system. You should now change this page with yours.

Please include in your web pages (at least the first) the 'Powered by Abyss Web Server' banner to promote the use of the software.

I suspected that. I also think reset was helpful, because I was trying other ports than 80 before, without results.

Thanks Jethro, owe you one... ;-)

When using Windows XP, or another firewall you should setup the firewall to accept connections from your network/internet.
First disable the firewall, and see if it works.
Then enable it again and open the portsettings for your web- and FTP server of the firewall.
If this doesn't work, check your web- ftp server settings again.
I don't think you forget to turn on the Virtual Server option ...

Btw, Chello / UPC is not blocking port 80/21/23
I'm using it without problems.
