Increase WLAN speed

When I transfer files over the WLAN I only get a maximum speed of approximately 1000 kBps even though my Wireless Mode is 54G Only. Should I check 54g Protection too or what? Are there any tweaks I can use to increase the speed?

Btw: The PCI-card has support for 108 MBps.

Trasfer you the file from a wlan pc to a wlan pc, or to a computer in the "normal" lan?
What is with the signal?
