(newb) strange problems: operating temperature, defect?

I'm having problems with my new WL-500gx:

At first, I had the problems all the time, but after a firmware upgrade (official from ASUS), I have the problems off and on, without me changing anything in the meanwhile (even during the same session).

I wonder if the problems could be caused by it simply getting too hot. It stands on top of my ADSL modem. Does anyone else (believe to) have had a temperature problem?

I describe the problems in the text below, which I wasn't able to post earlier due to the problems (which I don't have just now):

Browsing the Internet on my two Pc's works OK, but...
1) I can't send an e-mail (Outlook Express), but I can receive mail though.
2) When I connect to my disk/account at my university via FTP (Filezilla, PASV), I can get the listing and get something from there, but when I want to transfer something to my account, it freezes up (it appears to send the first 49152 bytes) and disconnects.
3) I have problems with some websites (ASUS e.g.) and especially with web forms, like posting something on this forum.

I've browsed this forum and the Internet for hours/days, but I can't find anything to solve my problem. I already put my FTP client into passive mode.

Setup:
Router: WL-500G Deluxe, original firmware 1.8.2.1 (now 1.9.4.0), factory settings (except ISP info of course).
ADSL modem: Alcatel Speedtouch Home (Ethernet).
Network: wired (wireless enabled though, left antenna off router).
PC's: Win98 SE, WinXP SP1 (yeah, I know...).
FTP client: Filezilla (PASV).

BTW: The online shop where I bought it (probably) won't take it back, because I upgraded the firmware! Is that normal?!?

Well... you can upgrade back to official firmware, so they probably wont know that you did anything. :D

In the post the link leads to, it says to go to the following key(s) in regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\[adapterid]

But on this PC (Win98),
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\
is as far I as can get. There's no Tcpip subdir.

Anyway, this seems to be about problems with desktop firewalls. On this PC, there is none. On my girlfriend's PC (WinXP) there's ZoneAlarm, but the problems stay, even when I shut it off.

Yes, the above info is for WinXP. You've to try on the WinXP box first.

If you're wondering about the temperature, might be an issue, but its easy to find out: Just add a table-fan on it, and see if works fine. If so, you might assume its a heat problem.

I had some heat problems as well, however I don't know if that was the WL500g or the other AP.

During holiday the last 2 weeks I had a WL500g as client, and a Eminent AP as router/accespoint, along with an omni antenna on the roof to have wireless coverage on our holiday home in Hungary. We had to add a fan since the room above the ground floor (small room, mainly for storage of the house-owners) became very hot. Since we found an fan over there and placed it in front of both devices, it worked well for 3 weeks..
Air temperature was about 35 degree (estimated)....

The 500g units and I'm guessing the gx to do have a heat problem they are not designed for warm climates... Recently asus reworked an entire shipment of 500g routers in Israel and switched some the hardware inside with more temperature durable hardware :)

I have had countless issues with the one I bought until they replaced it and not it works fine even under 40 degrees celcius with 80-90% moisture in the air :)

I'm not sure if Asus is doing it anywhere else but they replaced an entire shipment of routers here in Israel because of overheating issues...
