Connect to Windows Share behind WL-500g deluxe

Hi,

I live in a dormitory where we have access to the internet through a proxy.
also all computers in our dormatory are connected and we can share files via windows share. this worked perfectly - until i connected my new router (i bought it 'cause i have a new laptop and i wanted to connect both my stationary computer and my laptop to the internet. i needed to buy a computer 'cause we are only allowed to connect one computer to the net - this is checked via mac-adress).
now both computers are connected to the internet and have access to each other via windows-share. this works perfectly fine.
but i cannot connect to the other shares in our dormitory-network. i can ping all other computers here - but no way to connect their shares.
is there a possibility to get acces to the windows-shares in our dorm-net? it would not matter if only one computer could connect to the dorm-net. but HOW?
Here's further information about the topology:
the computers in our dorm-net have the ips 172.17.27.x
i got one ip like 172.... for my computer and so now this ip is used by my router on the wan-side.
in my personal lan i disabled dhcp and so my router has 192.168.1.1, my stationary computer 192.168.1.2 and my laptop 192.168.1.3 .
So, how to connect to the other windows-shares?

Hi Guys, no answers so far?

I tried a little further:
I forwarded the ports from 1 to 65000 to my stationary pc (just for test purposes). But I didn't see the other computers in the network neighborhood.
So I tried to connect to the other computers by typing "\\172.17.27.xxx" in the adress-field in windows explorer - and so i could connect to the computers i wanted to.
the other way round - another computer trying to connect to me, was also possible by typing my address in that computer's address-field.
but he cannot see me in the network neighborhood either.
i think, now it's just a name-problem.
but how can i solve this?
please answer - and eventually link to another thread where this problem is already solved. i just didn't find one.

There is no easy way for a Windows share through a firewall/NAT gateway. Why didn't you just bought a second network card, put it in your computer and activated lan sharing?

What you need is a WINS server to get the names of the Windows shares on the other side of your router. Try to put an ip directly in your explorer like "\\172.12.27.X" to get a share of a computer in you lan.

as I mentioned above, I CAN connect to the other computers by typing "\\172.17.27.XXX". And they can connect to me the same way.
but I cannot see them in network neighborhood and they cannot see me either.
I bought the router so that i need not start my stationary computer when i only want to use my laptop. i want to use mostly my laptop cause my computer is noisy.
can i start a wins server on my router to get all the names or must there be a wins-server inside the network of the others (172.17.27.XXX)?

I am not shure if there is a WINS server on your router, but if there is one on the net, you could put it's ip address in your TCP-IP configuration, either in the DHCP configuration of the router, or on you desktop computer and laptop.

There's no WINS Server on the net yet.
But must the wins server be in the 172.17..... net or can i setup one via nmbd on my router.
i use oleg's latest firmware (1.9.2.7-6a - thanks for your work!!!) and i started samba (smbd -D and nmbd -D). Now I can see my stick connected to my router, but i hoped - by starting nmbd - i would be able to see the other computers :(.
How must nmbd be configured? Or is it not possible to use it as a wins server for my purpose and i need a wins-server in the 172.... net?

If you start nmbd on the router and set the "wins support = yes" parameter in the smb.conf it could work, however I don't know where the smb.conf on the router is. Then you could tell the DHCP server that 192.168.1.1 is your WINS server and you should see the hosts on the other side of the router.

there's no problem in entering the values and saving it...
but nothing changed in windows network view... :(

any other suggestion?!?

Are you shure nmbd is running with wins-support? and does your windows box uses the router as wins server? (ipconfig /all will show you that).

as I was searching the web for a solution for this (I REALLY want to get this working), I found this post:

The second post saying something about broadcasts attracted my interest.
i heard something about broadcasts used by netbios and so on on different places and wondered how i could get this working and where i could get more information. maybe you all can help me.
I tried to put something in the routing table but it did not work as i do not really know what to put in the fields.
is here someone who can tell me if this could be the solution for my problem and HOW i can get this routing thing working?!?

btw: maybe this is of some interest for some of you:
there's a tool which can scan the local network. so i can see the other computers this way, but although i want to see them in network neighborhood too.

You are right, you need broadcast or a WINS server, but broadcast is not routed. You would have to bridge your two networks in order to get broadcast working, but you can't do that, because you can only have one MAC address in your public lan. I will try to get the WINS server running on my WL-500gx tonight and post success/failure story.
