New firmware available for download (http://files.wl500g.info/asus/custom/oleg/1.9.2.7-6b/). It includes snmp support and updated samba, which should allow handling of files > 2gb in size.

The complete list of changes:

Timezones fixes, affecting ppp reconnect issues
Fixed pppoe/pptp mss clamping (thanks to Ark+ for reporting)
Added various busybox applets
Fixed UPnP crashes (thanks to tomilius for finding this out)
Yet another WAN port dies fix
Added snmp support
Updated samba to patched 2.0.10
WL500g Deluxe VLANs completely reworked
Restore to defaults/shutdown are now called using RESTORE/RESET button as follows:

first 3 seconds - power LED on: release button to do nothing
next 5 seconds - power LED off: release button to "shutdown"
next 5 seconds - power LED blinking: release button to reset to defaults
start over

Updated firmware to CR6b (http://files.wl500g.info/asus/custom/oleg/1.9.2.7-6b/):

Changed WAN port dies workaround (perhaps this one would be the last)
Samba now properly deals with large (> 2gb) files
Fixed usb printer model parsing bug (affects some Canon models and usb/lpt adapters)

Great work Oleg.

It seems like it is much improved regarding handling P2P traffic like emule. The .5a version made WAN completely die when running emule, this one seems to handle it much better (even though not perfect).

Also - when using /usr/local/sbin/post_firewall

on the 500gx version that I am using, I now have to change the WAN port from eth0 to vlan1....this will probably cause problems for some people :-)

So, that's why never use hardcoded names. post-firewall gets WAN ifname as one of the args, and the correct usage is suggested on my page.

P.S. :) ATTN: WL500g Deluxe owners: WAN port is now vlan1, LAN is vlan0.

...namely, when I upgraded WL-500gx from 1.9.2.7 CR5a to CR6, reset it to defaults and reloaded CR5a settings - my wireless AP disappeared. I can no longer connect to my WPA-PSK (AES) protected wireless network (open seems to work, haven't tried WEP yet).

Should I restore "factory settings" and reenter all passphrases, macs & other stuff manually?
Nothing. In fact, there is no need to reset defaults then upgrading 5a to 6. It would use old settings. Anyway, importing settings is not a good idea.

Well...

Restored settings, reentered everything manually but laptop would not detect the presence of hidden WPA-PSK (AES) network to which it was connecting before without problem.

Unhiding network haven't helped - it is still undetectable.

Will try combinations with WEP...

Hi all,

I have the same problem as post #10 (http://wl500g.info/showpost.php?p=17388&postcount=10). With PWA-PSK I can't connect to the router.
I used to hide SSID without problems, but now the router dont show up - both from my IBM-T40 laptop or my PocketPC h6340. Disabling "Hide SSID" doesent help.
This applies both to 1.9.2.7-6 and 1.9.2.7-6.1

Oleg,

What is the status of WDS with WPA-PSK (TKIP or AES). Is it working with this release.
Is WPA2-PSK enabled?

Oleg
19-06-2005, 14:46
WPA2 is enabled since 1.9.2.7-2, as for WDS - I beleive WPA-PSK is working since 1.9.2.7-4 at least with TKIP.

Just got my self a wl500gx and have been using it with v1.9.2.7 CR5a and booting it with a usb stick. Then i upgraded to firmware v1.9.2.7 CR6a and now i can't find the usb stick. /dev/scsi is no longer available unless i boot with the usb stick connected (but then it will boot with v1.9.2.7 CR5a fw).
When i connect the usb stick the log says:

Jun 19 13:46:32 kernel: hub.c: new USB device 01:02.2-2, assigned address 2
Jun 19 13:46:32 kernel: usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x126f/0x1325) is not claimed by any active driver.

Anyone else got the same problem ?

Yes, the speed of the WAN port is lowered by about 10% due to workaround. In fact, you could try using -6a with fixed port speed (try 100full) - this way workaround is disabled.

Have you rebooted wl500g before flashing? Also, the safest way to flash is to use firmware restoration tool all the time.

First of all I want to thank all contributors, board members and Oleg for this great site. This site is one of the reasons why I left NetGear and embarked on Asus board.

I had upgraded from release 5a to 6a but since WAN interface behaved erratically I had to downgrade back to 5a.
The WAN port is connected to an ISDN router over plain Ethernet 10Mbit/s. While on 6a webpages would load half way and it would take at least a couple of minutes before they opened completely. Email also stopped downloading after first few messages and it took 3 more minutes before it received the rest.
To me it looks as if there is something not working on the WAN interface either related to media detection or traffic flow control.
And surely the AP was rebooted before and after upgrades with no change in configuration settings.

Try using fixed speed - 10full or 10half depending on your modem capabilities.

Hi everyone, just wanted to say this is a great forum. At last I have found a router to meet all my needs and I can share my 500GB LA Cie drive. I had a nightmare finding a distributor in the UK but www.scan.co.uk came up trumps.

I have just purchased the 500g Deluxe and was wondering if this firmware is compatible as everyone seems to talk about the 500g only.

Many Thanks.

You'll want to grab the firmware labeled as 500gx.

Thanks Oleg!
Forcing WAN to 10Mbit full duplex fixed the problem. Perhaps Autodetection process is failing. When set to auto, ping to the 3Com ISDN modem came back in pairs- 2ms and 347ms. While fixed pings are 2 ms.

Just a side note- rather mystery to me- after upgrading from 5a to 6a the dropbear settings, keys and daemon startup in post-boot script are gone, which is to be expected I suppose? Downgrading to 5a and surprise- dropbear is up and configured with correct keys. The mystery part is that after downgrade to 5a wl500g remembers old dropbear environment and settings including keys. How is this possible?
Well since then I upgraded back to 6a and configured dropbear with new keys and all is well.

The only way to get into this page is selecting apply in the previous page.

Yes, this is expected behaviour. It's not lost, but flashfs was disabled. You've to use flashfs enable after the firmware upgrade.

In fact WAN port dies is turned off with fixed speed.

As for WAN port dies problem. At first: this is HW bug, don't know why ASUS does not contacted Broadcom yet. So, I recommend everyone experiencing reboots or WAN port dies problem to exchange wl500g with wl500g deluxe, but keep in mind, that wl500g deluxe is not equiped with LPT port. Also, most likely wl500g v2 should appear (don't know the real name), which is based on hw similar to wl500g deluxe, so no wan port dies problem should happen with it.

I was able to reproduce the problem (there're two possible states, which hw could enter, but this is really hard to detect). My unit never rebooted. It's extremely strange, that some of you are experiencing reboots. So, perhaps some of the units are really defective...

ONCE AGAIN: replace defective wl500g units, which are rebooting with ASUS 1.8.2.4/1.9.x.x firmwares or 1.9.2.7-6a, but working fine with 1.8.1.7-3. This is perhaps a hw bug, which I'm unable to workaround.

Hello group. I got the wl-005g model ,2.4 board revision router this week,so I
decided to flash it with v1.9.2.7 cr5a and everything appeared fine so I decided to flash with cr6a. I had disconnected leads and cables to enable a clean reboot prior to flashing, after it rebooted i noticed that the wireless connection was poor, dropping and intermittent. connection was reading good but speed was varying from 1 - 11 mb/s on a dell true mobile 1150 pc card
I immediately suspected the firmware upgrade but only when i tried to adjust
the antenna i noticed that this was effecting the connection. I squeezed the centre socket of the antennaes sma connector with a jewellers screwdriver and now the connection has been perfect since. What i really want to warn others is of a possible faulty antennae causing this type of fault and what a
coincidence with this acting up when i done an update, must have effected
it when i was removing the connections..I would also Just like to thank you for the great software..I`m a total linux novice and I`m really crawling through the tutorials. sorry for the long post but I hope that my problem may

bind interfaces only = yes

In previous versions I couldn't connect to my ftp-server over the internet with dyn-dns. I always got a time-out error. I think it's a wrong setting in the firewall of the wl500g.

After some use of the 6a.3 ( ~72hours ) the firmware it seems stable and no resets, reboots or problems from services.

Once again just to remember my test's are using the WL500g with 1 connection in LAN and 3 WLAN connection WPA-PSK/ AES+TKIP ( 2 AES broadcom chip 802.11g and one 1 TKIP intel 802.11b ), with FTP server, DYNDNS and a print service port 9101.

i already enable samba, and put LAN as my hostname, and don't work i see that smb.conf was not create...???

I've also got problems after the upgrade (b on a gx).

First of all a lot of settings where gone after the upgrade. The modem asked me to do the quick setup...

I did [flashfs enable] to restore my previous (samba) settings (/etc/smb.conf is back again) and I had to set my LAN name again.

The deamons are up and running, I get no errors in the /var/log files, /tmp/harddisk works fine, but I can't browse \\192.168.1.1\.

Tuur
06-07-2005, 20:57
Update: the first problem had to do with the fact that my LAN name was the same as a machine name (that's what you get when you have to do the complete config again).

After that I could browse *something* but it sure wasn't my disk.

The logfile revealed the password file error, so setting

encrypt passwords = no

in /etc/smb.conf did the job.

Hi Oleg

6b is working here since 11 Days now, and stable even with doing lots of software trys on ipkg packages, so stable as hell for me.

But, my Terratec Webcam Pro is still not working, giving "Webcam capture no Frame" error repetedly in the logs, and showing lightgreen color all over the camserv generated pictures. Refering to here (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=292) this is broken quite some time now and i have no other cam at the moment, so i am in need for a fix. Maybe a newer Version of the 2.xx Driver series for the OV51x Chips fixes this problem ?. I may remember had it working on some quite old Firmware, but i dont know which one it was, sry.

As a sidenote, disabling buttons for the 3 Print Servers form the Web iface would still be nice to gain some more memory, as we have lots of optional software now that can be enabled ...

Hi Oleg

6b is working here since 11 Days now, and stable even with doing lots of software trys on ipkg packages, so stable as hell for me.

Fine.

Probably this would be updated in the 1.9.4.1 custom, but I've no ETA on this.

As a sidenote, disabling buttons for the 3 Print Servers form the Web iface would still be nice to gain some more memory, as we have lots of optional software now that can be enabled ...

I'm too lazy. On the other hand, if you've some packages running already, then you could easily add killall to the post-boot. That's the point. :)

talking about all things new....has anyone tried the new intel wireless drivers (9.0.2.0) with olegs superb firmware?
Thanks for the note about new version. I tried it today, and so far it works really well - the transmission speed dropped by about 10% on the edge of the signal - but reliability went up incredibly. At the same spot I had about 40% packetloss before and 1% now (at ~100kB/sec speed). Finally usable in whole house ;)

Side note: I hate uninstaller of 9.0.1.0 - it rendered computer unbootable and I had to play for about two hours with regedit to get it running

Thanks for the info about this new version. I'm using the 9.0.2.0 intel drvrs right now with the ASUS 1.9.4.0 fw version and WPA2-PSK/TKIP. So I guess it will work fine with Oleg's firmware.

Last week I upgraded my WL500G with firmware v1.9.2.7 CR6b. All seems to be oke, but today I discovered that my ssid was not hidden anymore. This I like an invitation to join my wirelessnetwork. I have all of the securty enabled so there is no panic. I hide my SSID now manually by a tellnet session.

Please can this bug be fixed, or did I something wrong when I upgraded?

You've to use web interface:

You've to use web interface:
Wireless | Advanced > Hide SSID

Yes, I did. I hide my SSID in the configuration setting, but I can still see my SSID. Than I unhide my SSID in the same configurationpanel and I also still see my SSID. Back again to hide my SSID and nothing changed, still showing my SSID. So now I hide my SSID manually by typing in the commands.

Maybe I did something wrong when I upgraded the firmware. If I have have time later today I will reset my WL500G and flash it again with the same firmware.

See you later.

Hi

After reading this (and relevant) topics, i've decided to flash my asus wl-500g router to the 1.9.2.7 CR6b version to counter the dhcp reset problem.

The problem I'm experiencing is that my download speed cannot exceed above 300k/sec, while my connection is capable of 800k/sec. Changing the auto-negotiation in the IP-settings to 10mbit half/full duplex only made things a lot worse in terms of speeds (100mbit half/full duplex mode is not supported by my dsl modem).

After getting fed up with this, I've decided to flash back to original ASUS firmwares, going back to firmware 1.6.5.3. Unfortunately, the speed problem persisted.

My guess is that somewhere in that little device some various settings are still stored, which are not deleted while flashing the device or resetting to the factory defaults. The reason I come to this conclusion is that the wireless encryption settings specify a WPA option, while 1.6.5.3 really does not have WPA in it.

Does anyone know how to clear the entire device so that I can flash a firmware which allows me to get my full speed? Or is it possible to change those speed settings via telnet using the 1.9.2.7 CR6b firmware?

Thanks!

Reset to defaults by pressing a button clears everything.
Try connecting your PC without wl500g and check actual speed. Also, try wired connection.

Hi Oleg,

I'm connected via a wired connection and connecting directly to the modem gives me the speed I mentioned, which is around 800 kb/sec down and 90 kb/sec up.
Also, there are currently no other computers connected onto the router, and I'm not living in a neighborhood with a lot of wannabe wifi scriptkiddies :p

Cables have also been checked to make sure they are not the problem so the only conclusion I can take is that the problem lies within the router.

Any ideas?

Hi all, I've bought Asus WL500g yesterday and flashed it with 1.9.2.7-6b and I'm still a bit confused by some things. I've gone through
http://wiki.wl500g.info/index.php/FlashfsBoot
and
http://wiki.wl500g.info/index.php/PackageDropbear
but I have not found any of mentioned files in my WL500g.
No rc.sshd, pre-boot, post-boot, post-firewall.
/usr/local contains only dir root.
I have tried even "ls -la /" but found nothing.
What am I doing wrong?
Are those wiki pages up to date with this release (the one with FlashfsBoot states something like it have to be updated)?
Thanks for patience with newbie ;)

i've been using Oleg's great custom firmware's on a WL500g with great success.
currently 1.9.2.7-6a.3

i've been trying to use the BANDWIDTH MANAGEMENT.

i wanted to make at least 64k/s (half megabit) for browsing Port 80
also at least 20k/s for Port 25 (uploading email).
my connection is 2048/200 (256k/25k) ...(damn NTL upload ratios)

in the web interface is see the units described as Min.(kbps)
i understasnd this is KiloBytes/sec.
so i enter 64 for port 80, etc
(i've also tried to enter in BITS 65536) but no difference)
browsing with a P2p programe running in background like Emule, shareaza, etc still slow and the Bandwidth Management doesn't seem to work.

anyone know why, or havingsame problem?

with the bandwidth management as MIN 512Kb/s the setting doesn't work either.
browsing crawls at dial up speads or WORSE.
clearly port 80 not getting it's minimum half megabit.

i upgraded to firmware .6b, now in P2P progs i'm firewalled and my girlfriend's lappy can't see the router at all !
i set DMZ on my PC for my IP to not be firewalled.that worked.
wireless laptop still not seeing the router at all.

tried Asus's official 1.9.2.7 to test bandwidth management but it's the same story. it simply does not work.

Hey Oleg,

I've been using firmware 1.9.2.7-6b for over a week and this firmware finally solves the dhcp lease reset problem, which the ASUS ones don't.

However, the router still reboots sometimes, usually after a day (or two).
At first I thought that it rebooted because the internal flash was full due to the syslog, so I killed syslogd to prevent that from happening. But still it reboots sometimes.

Unfortunately, I can't give you logfiles because when it reboots, it erases the log (ofcourse) so how or what do you need to track this problem?

You can setup a syslog server on your PC like Kiwi Syslog (http://www.kiwisyslog.com/info_syslog.htm) and let your router forward his syslog messages to this server.

... so it's good idea to call asus tech support.

All I have to say about that is lol.

But otherwise, I have to say my router has been extraordinarily stable since I ditched wireless (almost fully; PPC). Even then, it was stable--no crashing in over 20 days, and then I messed with it--but the wireless functionality wasn't, at least when used with my horrible ASUS wireless card (I still have a support ticket open with them about it that hasn't been responded to in a few months now, or ever). Most of my configuration (the firewall) is done with scripts, and recently I was able to "overcome paranoia" and forget about radius (it worked but was an unnecessary pain the way I had it set up). ... Anyway, thanks for the good firmwares, Oleg! I'm having a blast not even having to think about my router.

Then perform the flashfs enable/save/commit commands and Bob's your uncle mate!

Thanks for help, I've tried that, but the script is not executed (chmod +x, saved, commited).
Moreover in FlashfsBoot wiki pages are mentioned files in /init directory - I have no such directory in my root.

on two issues I need your help:

1. The Interent connect button does not directly make a connection to the internet.
At least I can not see that its connected. But when I open up the Internet explorer then the connection will be established. But never via Web Interface to the Router.

2. Could it be that the router keeps all the time the internet connection alife?
I was just surprised when I checked the online time at my provider that I was 24 hours on line with less than 30 Megs.
Normaly I would expect after reaching the idle time the internet connection is switched off.

Appreciate your help, keep it going, well done!

Hello,
I have problem with 1.9.2.7 customized firmware. I have switched wan and lan port, so computers are connected to WAN (dhcp runs there) and LAN is bridged with wireless and connected to corporate router (and to the internet). In one segment I have over 20 Asus WL500g routers connected into the tree (no cycles). When there is traffic on this network, some malformed packets appear. Something like this:

01:06:47.970228 172.16.0.20 > 00:0b:6a:32:81:96, ethertype ARP (0x0806), length 60: truncated-arp
0x0000: 4500 0028 a0be 4000 7f06 bcd1 0a00 1403 E..(..@.........
0x0010: 51d7 2e66 0a50 b848 6902 4476 a894 60f9 Q..f.P.Hi.Dv..`.
0x0020: 5010 fbb8 9c3c 0000 0000 0000 0000 P....<........

These packets were originaly standard TCP/IP packets from the computers connected to the WAN (they still contain beginning of the IP packet, so I was able to trace them to originating computers). 172.16.0.20 is the LAN/Wireless IP address of the Asus router. But it isn't still originating router, that discards the packet. Sometimes it is done by router in the way (on the bridge between wireless and LAN) from originating router to corporate router.

Does anybody have some idea how to solve this problem?

This is not a bug, this is by design. And, yes it's set to default, not 255 (255 == -1). If you do not like this - submit your request to Broadcom (http://www.broadcom.com)

Im experience some issue in this firmware since i was testing with a cable caTV DOCSIS connection.

The issue its the router stop replying to WAN(internet) connections, and my connection to internet goes off after some time.

I have searched all the log and i dont detect any abnormal problem. But when happens again i will put here.

Any diference from the router configuration that i made to use this connection to internet was switch from PPOE to Automatic ip in WAN connection type.

Another observation, its when this happen all i need its to disconnect from the router like. Disable the ethernet device and reconnected again. The same happens to wireless connections. And sometimes i just need to wait so i can get back the WAN working again.

Does anyone know this issue or how can i resolve?

Can be this a problem from my modem or isp?

I hope that someone could help me out.

TIA

PS. I'm sorry if this is not the right thread to post in
You've to learn networking concepts first, not vi. WAN and LAN ports could not be in the same net, otherwise routing will not work. So firmware reseted your incorrect values.

Dear Oleg,

first of all let me thank you for your great work :D

I run into some trouble, when I tried to connect a netgear wg500v2 wlan card with the wg-500g with your 1.9.2.7 CR6b Firmware.

I watched the behaviour that the card connects well and a first transmission of data from a website was succesfull. But after a short time (a minute or two) the transmission went down and no more packets could be received.

After some troubleshooting I found that the problem comes from the packet size / mtu settings of the card. The default was set to 3000. When I change it to 1490 everything went well.

I am no IP-expert, but I wonder if there is something wrong with the fragmentation handling in the firmware. I would have expect, that the router would fragment the respond packets, even if the default mtu settings form the netgear card are nonsense.

I still have problems with random resets of my wl500g, I've redirected the syslog to a nearby linuxbox without me getting any closer to the problem

Firmware: 1.9.2.7-6b

I've turned off most of the features, only extra features is wshaper, dropbear ssh and a connected raw-printer. I also usually have a 250GB USB disk connected, but I've removed this as smb usually leakes memory and starts killing of processes.

One strange thing I've discovered using the broadband down here in Australia (I'm actually norwegian), I get the same IP as the ADSL router.

Sep 6 00:16:23 jens.thehive.org dhcp client: bound IP : xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx from yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy

where x and y are identical. So i get a dhcp lease from the same ip as i am given. This lookes strange in my routing table as well. Default gateway is the same as the interface on eth1, but it works and i can stilll access the router by going to 10.1.1.1

I also get this if I connect a laptop directly to the router.

I am not sure if this is relevant. Anyway the router resets every day. Some days it can be stable for several hours with heavy load. And some days it crashes every 10 minutes.

Any ideas? And is there any way to make the dhcpd-client have a longer lease period?

What is the watchdog process checking?

You've to adjust DHCP server settings - most likely your modem is running DHCP and gives really strange lease time of 1 minute, as well as forms incorrect answers... Most likely, this is the reason for reboots, as wl500g is reconfiguring over and over, triggering wl500g wan port hw bug...

Unfortunatly. The adsl-modem isn't configurable to go into any other modus than this strange switch-modus and the dhcp-server is either non configurable, or a passthorugh from my isp. Could the dhcp-client be configured to have a longer leasetime? Or maybe it would be better to set a static ip and see how that works out... I'll try the last idea.

Tried, and failed. Still reboots even with a using static ip. It still dies when i peak the my adsl line. I guess the ADSL modems sends icmp packages back telling it to lower it's troughput and the server does not like that and dies..
But why does it die? Running hot? Bad eth1 driver? What is the whachdog doing? Rebooting if not able to write to a file?

Just a quick tought. Are there any llimitations to upgrade kernel from 2.4.20 to somewhat higher (eg 2.4.31)

I have thist annoying messages:

KERNEL: assertion ((1<<sk2->state)&(TCPF_ESTABLISHED|TCPF_CLOSE_WAIT|TCPF_CLOSE)) failed at af_inet.c(689)
Which is fixed in 2.4.21-pre5 and later.

Another annoying thing which is hopefuly fixed in latest kernels is USB timeout issue on busy server with gift and torrent with load rarely under 1. But for this I've found solution (Revoltec case and WD3200 disk).

Now if you skipped bla-bla from above. The question is? What are the issues when upgrading to other kernel? Are kernel pathes needed for WL500GX? Does stock kernel suffice? Only .config needed, lzma patch, usb patch ...?

I've compiled Oleg source and unslug tree w/o problem. But bricking router with naive replacement with other kernel bothers me.

Try replacing your ADSL modem with other model. Looks like it's really crazy... Neighbour table overflow means, that too many hosts are around.
Try dumping it using
cat /proc/net/arp

Do you've any multicast in your network?

Also, replacing with wl500g deluxe could help, as it does not have ethernet controller hw bugs...

Watchdog does not reboot wl500g, it just respawns some processes...

yes, binary wl.o.

Which is fixed in 2.4.21-pre5 and later.

backport a fix to 2.4.20.

Another annoying thing which is hopefuly fixed in latest kernels is USB timeout issue on busy server with gift and torrent with load rarely under 1. But for this I've found solution (Revoltec case and WD3200 disk).

usb stuff is from the 2.4.25 kernel.

Now if you skipped bla-bla from above. The question is? What are the issues when upgrading to other kernel? Are kernel pathes needed for WL500GX? Does stock kernel suffice? Only .config needed, lzma patch, usb patch ...?

Binary wl.o, as well as other broadcom customizations to the kernel.

Well, openwrt uses now the latest from 2.4.21, as they've ported broadcom stuff and adjusted kernel to be wl.o compatible, but this requires a lot of testing to be absilutely sure, that everything still works...

Hi,

The wl-hdd forum section is scarely quiet that why post this question here.

I have a wl-hdd with Oleg's latest firmware 1.9.2.7-6b installed. When I try to upload a file with FTP (which is bigger than 2GB) to the HD it stops at 2 GB. Do I do something wrong ? or is this a known "feature" :) Do I have to change something in the stupid-ftp conf ?

Hi guys, currently using 1.9.2.7.CR6b firmware on my WL-500g, but have an issue on WAN DHCP.
I know its not a bug, and it is not normal circumstances, but my and many others ISP in Norway is currently have a problem on their DHCP server, with regards to delayed allocation of DHCP address.
I have tested with my PC and connected it straight to the modem, then it takes 60-120 seconds before it is assigned a DHCP address from the ISP.
But going through the router (wl-500g), the router is not able to "wait" that long for a response from the ISP DHCP server, and thereby just says "Disconnected", "Lost IP from server"
Is there any easy change to extend the discovery time, before "timeout" for a WAN DHCP request???

When I press the "Connect" button, I can see in the log that it ask for "Renew", but with problems like this, does it ask with a "renew of 0.0.0.0" or last known IP???
I was told they had to delete the ISP DHCP assignment log, and that the router must ask for a renew of 0.0.0.0 so it will receive a new IP.

Pls help, It is the 5th day "without" Internet and with DHCP problems from my ISP, and they are "Still" working to "fix" their problem!!!

================================================== ======
No rush guys, just spoke to my ISP again, and I got a fixed IP for free forever :D
No longer need DHCP on WAN....

Best Regards
Strilen

Hi,
I have firmware v1.9.2.7 CR6b in my Asus WL-500b and have little problem. When I enable MAC filter in Internet firewall settings to accept mode and ping respond from WAN, web access from WAN is enabled too, then ping respond from WAN and web access from WAN does not work.
MAC filter is determined for LAN. Why have a effect for WAN too?

Thank's for answer.

Oleg let me start off by saying "Thank you for the work!"

I will have to try this firmware release when I get home. I don't want to do it remotely :)

For the Wan-port dying issue:

I dont know if this has been brought up before or not.

My situation in the past (1.9.2.7-5a and older) has mirrored most other users except I'm not using the WAN port. I use my wl500g as an access-point/print server only. All routing is done via my 'nix box.

My access to the wl500g disappears. It is becomes non-pingable. ARP does not complete. When this happens, all print services cease and I cannot telnet/http into the administrative interface. The switch continues to function flawlessly.

What intrigues me is that I am not using the WAN port at all. My 'nix box feeds my lan via the switch and the other PCs are using the other LAN ports.

Has the possibility that the WAN port dying issue is not really the WAN port and something else? I do notice that when using P2P applications the dying happens more frequently. I've had the wl500g for almost a year now, but did not start seeing issues until I tried P2P applications.

I'll upgrade to current 1.9.2.7-CR6 later this morning to get a feel for how it works.

This definitely is a gigaset driver problems. Nothing to do with firmware.

In this post (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?postid=19165#poststop) Oleg is mentioning a fix for 6b that should be incorporated in 6c. Since I also have the problem with samba and large files that should resolved with this fix, i want to ask when 6c becomes available. If not, could anyone supply me with (or better post) the patch for 6b so I can compile it myself?

Thanks,

Biko

Hi, it looks like you got some problems with your USB-Stick.

Like you can see at the end of you Kernel Messgaes, the driver has problems to recognize your stick.
Did you tried it at another Linux System ??

Do there the same and post the dmesg output. May be the Kernel-Developers changed something (and they possibly did) in the younger Kernel Versions.

Greetings from Berlin
Andy

Your stick does not contain partition table, it's formated like a big floppy disk. It's not supported by wl500g this way. You've to run fdisk and create a partition and reformat the stick.

I try (from my linux server) get snmp info on my Asus WL-500b,
(with firmware WL500b-1.9.2.7-6b.trx) but It seems doesnt working.

I try
/usr/local/mrtg-2/bin/cfgmaker public@80.250.xx.xx

but I got:::
SNMP Error:
no response received

I try too:
snmpwalk -v1 -c public 80.250.xx.xx

I got:
Timeout: No Response from 80.250.xx.xx

1, Of course I have Enable SNMP.. on YES, community name I for the first test I have public.
2, Of course from my linux sever I do a lots of walks to another routers like cisco, dlink.

Any Ideas what could be wrong ?

Timeout: No Response from 80.250.xx.xx

Are you trying to access this from WAN? If so, then this would not work until you adjust your firewall (manually vis post-firewall). This is a security feature.

Sorry, problem with SNMP solved. I just talk with my provider, from provider side are some rules for filtering snmp, and icmp. :-(

I have second questions about firewall.
I was searching for info about "howto write my own rules to firewall" which stay written after router reboot,
but I did not find it. Could You help. Me ?

Where and How write new rules permanently to firewall from shell ????

Thank You Petek.

I searched on the forum about this and the one and only who experienced this had probably a full disk.
I had Oleg's latest fw 6b installed and when backing up from xp there were multiple long write failures. Before I was running Jockyw's fw and no problems. I turned back to original fw. 1.2.3.4. again no problems. So what could be wrong? I want Oleg's fw, but I also need to backup.:(

I found that my WL-500g with 1.9.2.7 cr6b does not update its internal clock via time server. I tried several servers, but it sticks to display the actual year as 1970. Any hints?

I once tried to set up samba but did not succeed. Could this interfere with the time server function? Also i use the wl-500g as an access point with dhcp switched off.

I've got the same problem with ntp ... On boot it's ok, but if i want to get the date by the 'date' command, sometimes it gives me a day in 1970 (01/01).
What's the problem ?

I've do this :

*installed crontab
*rmmod audio and soundcore
*kill waveservermain
*insmod videodev, ov51x and ox519_decomp, scsi_mod, sd_mod, usb-storage *make a ln -s /dev/v4l/video0 /dev/video0

hey,

is there a chance that a HFS+ formatted hdd is supported by upcoming oleg's firmwares ... i've read somewhere in the forum that it's currently not supported and that hdds shall be formatted with ext3 or fat32, but as far as i know the kernel 2.4.x supports HFS+ ....is there a reason why it's not implemented?
or can I add HFS+ support by myself? if yes, how?

cheers, thomas.

ps: searching the forum with =< 3 chars (like hfs, mac, osx etc.) gives a zero search result in the forum.... so maybe there is already an answer, but i was unable to find it :)

I think the best way to get HFS+ is to compile it by your self by setting the right Kernel Parameter.

Why it's not implemented, well I think ext3 and fat32 is the usual standard, that almost everybody has. If every Filesystem should be implemented ......

I think you should better by a small tidy PC for this, the flash rom at this devices are not that big to keep every feature in it.

To get to your question about a chance, I don't think so. Since most of us are PC-Users:

Linux can read and write FAT32
Windoose can at least read with an extra driver ext32
So for those who know what Linux is will probably format with ext32, the others will use fat32 to switch the USB-Drive between Windows and the WL*** device.

So for those who know what Linux is will probably format with ext32, the others will use fat32 to switch the USB-Drive between Windows and the WL*** device.

well, osx can read/write ext32, fat32 and hfs/hfs+ .... but I really don't think that because "most" people are using intel, oleg will not incorporate hfs+ support in his firmwares.... this must be a technical issue....

cheers, thomas.

wl500g is running linux, so using ext3 as most logical approach. Other filesystems (fat32/ntfs) are used for compatibility with original firmwares only. No other filesystems would be supported, as there are not enough space available in the built-in flash to support everything.

I have been chasing a solution to my Bigpond dropout problem for months. Every 28 minutes, there are time-outs on email send/receive and browsing and complete dropouts on VPN (client end via router with either ethernet or wireless) or VoiP. Casual users might not notice these problems. Every new FW I hope it is fixed. Asus 1.9.2.7 did not drop out but lost connection completely every couple of days and had to be manually reconnected. Since then, all FW versions have not needed to be reconnected manually, but all have had the same dropout problem (every 28 minutes). This includes Oleg's 1.9.2.7-4 (installed 21 March 05), Asus 1.9.4.0, 1.9.4.6, 1.9.5.0 and Oleg's 1.9.2.7-6b (using FW restoration tool; what a hassle!). Please help! Surely I am not the only one with this problem. Or have all Bigpond users given up on the Asus routers or Bigpond (I don't have the latter option). Surely there is a solution to this.

Have you checked lease time, provided by BigPond? Perhaps, it's about 1 hour, which is too low.

Oleg,
Thanks for replying. Lease time requested by the router is the default, 86400. The lease time indicated in the router log as granted by Bigpond is nearly always 21600. The dropouts occur in multiples of about 27 1/2 minutes after the last lease is granted from Bigpond (i.e., 27.5 mnutes, 55 minutes, 82.5 minutes, etc.). The dropout lasts for about a minute or more. If using a VPN client, it drops out. Likewise with VoiP. This is *very* frustrating. I find it hard to believe that I am the only one with this problem.

I've solved the ongoing problems with dropouts with VPN and VoiP (every 27-28 minutes). I've got a Netgear WGR614 router! Setup was a breeze and it works rock solid with Bigpond cable. It's Bigpond client actually works the way it is supposed to. On several forums re the WL500g, no one has told me that they have no dropout problems with VPN or VoiP with Bigpond. I take it that 'successful' WL500g + Bigpond users (are there any?) only use it casually and so do not notice the dropouts. I have been unable to get either Oleg or Asus firmware to give a stable connection with Bigpond. No one seems to be listening, so I give up. I am returning the unit. It's a pity; the router is such a nice concept, but it does not do the basics, so it is useless to me.

This is really offtopic. I'm very happy, that you've bought netgear and it works. I'm a Russia citizen, so I've no idea why BigPond does not work in Australia. I've done my best, but as seems nobody in Australia interested in your problems. I'm not a "Technical Support", and not an ASUS affiliate, sorry.

Oleg, thanks for your replies and all the (unpaid) work you do to develop FW for the Asus routers. Many are benefiting from that, I'm sure. The Bigpond client is not your responsibility; it is Asus'. But they do not seem to be interested. Their technical support is virtually non-existent. Thanks again.

Well I am in Brizzy QLD AU on the BPA cable network
I run a 14 system network here at home with dedicated systems for mail server , FTP server , WEB server both HTTP and HTTPS , I have a system set up so I can remote administer about 160 networks world wide for clients

I have used Oleg FW since day one when I found out the default FW BPA login wont work.

in the last year that I have been installing WL-500g's (over 80 in QLD) all with Oleg's FW not one has had a problem after being flashed.

I am by no means a "casual user"

I would be looking at your other hardware for faults or misconfiguration

Oleg I thank you for your hard work as you have saved me much time and stress.

Hello, i am new to this fórum.

i own a WL-500g, and i made this firmware update for first time. everything installed correctly.

the reason for the update was only this SNMP support, and is not working :)

i am using MRTG with this command:

perl cfgmaker public@10.0.0.1 asus.cfg
----
SNMP Error:
no response received

i didn't found any information about how to activate SNMP, or define the comunity and port.

thanx in advance, and sorry my bad english :)

excelent work Oleg! great firmware, fórum and support

just after posting this i found on the admin area that SNMP was inactive.

IP Config > SNMP > Enable SNMP

(on this menu we can also name the comunity!)

sorry for posting garbage, maybe my error could help someone

Hi, I try to upgrade from 1.9.2.7-3b to 1.9.2.7-6b and for some reason I am unable to finish installation. Luckily I can restart the 500g by cycling the power but it is strange or am I forgetting something ?
So I was lucky/forgetting something, just resetted all parameters and I was able to upload the software.

Hi Peter,

I was faced a similiar problem. One and only one of several WL500g routers, could not be updated to every version of Olegs software. Unfortunately I never found the reason! Several 1.9.2.7- version ended after upload and reset in a continous reset loop. You can notice a short "flicker" of the power lead every 10 to 15 sec. and the WLAN LED was never activated! I stick up with this problem. The last know version updating and running was 1.9.2.7-5 all ...-6(a,b) did not update to this router. May be that's useful to you to save your time. By the way this behaviour started earlier. Perhaps you search this forum by my user name....

Oleg,
Thanks for replying.

I too had the same problem with my Asus 500gx although I have now "fixed" it via a little workaround.

The issue relates to both the Asus firmware and Oleg's firmware apparently a) hardcoding of the BigPond authentication/heartbeat server as an IP address and b) the BigPond domain not being appended to the router's DNS registration.

From what I can see the Asus firmware (and Oleg's firmware) uses the resolv.conf file where it specifies the IP BigPond name servers but does not reference the BigPond domain (e.g. nsw.bigpond.net.au).

With either firmware, bpalogin is executed as part of the startup routine and it uses the bpalogin.conf file. This specifies username/password the IP address for the authentication/heartbeat etc. This means bpalogin logs in ok to BigPond. However, bpalogin actually looks for heartbeats from "sm-server" . Since there is no default domain specified in resolv.conf, sm-server does not resolve to an IP address, thus bpalogin assumes the heartbeat will come from 255.255.255.255. So after it is logged on and the heartbeat arrives from the heartbeat server IP address (not 255.255.255.255), bpalogin ignores it because it isn't expecting the heartbeat from that address. Net effect is after four missed/ignored heartbeats, BigPond drops the connection and bpalogin logs in again. This happens ever 25-27 minutes.

The fix involves changing resolv.conf to add a line "domain nsw.bigpond.net.au" so that when bpalogin starts sm-server is appended with .nsw.bigpond.net.au. This then resolves to the IP address of the heartbeat server and bpalogin is now about to processes the heartbeat from the right IP address (not 255.255.255.255).

The actual workaround a little convoluted due to the fact that resolv.conf is replaced each time the router is rebooted. So you need to create a "post-boot" script which kills the bpalogin upon startup, sleeps a bit, then replaces resolv.conf with an updated one with a domain added and finally re-runs bpalogin.

Bottom line is that the router and the bpalogin connection are now rock-steady.

Please post your bpalogin.conf file.

Please post your bpalogin.conf file.

Here it is:

username ########
password ########
authserver dce-server
authdomain nsw.bigpond.net.au
localport 5050
logging syslog
debuglevel 2
minheartbeatinterval 60
maxheartbeatinterval 420
#connectedprog bpa_connect
#disconnectedprog bpa_disconnect

Note the commenting out of the last two lines, these don't appear to be needed.

Unfortunately it is not as simple as replacing bpalogin.conf. From what I can see bpalogin terminates everytime the DHCP client renews its lease. It also appears that bpa_connect is executed each time this happens which results in the modified bpalogin.conf being overwritten with the old/original bpalogin.conf.

Thus, to ensure that each subsequent automatic restart of bpalogin correctly processes the heartbeat it is critical that resolv.conf is updated as part of the post-boot script to append the line "domain <state>.bigpond.net.au" (replace <state> with appropriate value, e.g. nsw, vic, qld etc.). That way each time bpa_connect executes (and thus bpalogin), it can resolve the sm-server to the correct IP address for processing heartbeats.

I'm thinking that if the DHCP client picked up the WAN domain in the first place then none of this would be needed.

#disconnectedprog bpa_disconnect

This file does not seem to be automatically generated by firmware. Which value you've specified for Heartbeat server?

Also, I need nvram values for wan_heartbeat_x, wan0_domain, wan0_gateway

The bpalogin.conf file I posted earlier is the one I created manually. Here is the original as generated by the firmware:

username xxxxxxxx
password xxxxxxxx
authserver 61.9.192.13
localport 5050
logging syslog
debuglevel 0
minheartbeatinterval 60
maxheartbeatinterval 420
connectedprog bpa_connect
disconnectedprog bpa_disconnect

The nvram values are:

wan_heartbeat_x=61.9.192.13
wan0_heartbeat_x=
wan0_domain=nsw.bigpond.net.au
wan0_gateway_t=
wan0_gateway=<IP address of my WAN gateway>

Incidentally, I've done some more testing and there is a very simple solution to this whole issue. Simply appending the BigPond domain (<state>.bigpond.net.au) to the resolv.conf file using the post-boot script allows bpalogin to register the correct address for the heartbeat server. This simple approach works because bpalogin actually executes a few moments after the post-boot script (not before as I was led to believe).

In other words, no changes to bpaconfig.conf are needed, and no need to setup the post-boot file to kill the bpalogin process on startup and then restart with the new config file. All that the post-boot file needs to do is append a line to the resolv.conf file with the BigPond domain.
