The rest you can see it at:

With this specs i really hope that will be a BROADCOM chip :D

Update:

I think i found it: http://www.broadcom.com/collateral/pb/53001_53003-PB00-R.pdf or maybe not, this is a Network Processor and not a WLAN.

It could be a Marvell 600Mhz cause Ralink fastest CPU is a RT3883 500Mhz, but lets wait to see it :D

Update 2:

Finally i found it, router will use BCM4706 processor and wireless BCM4331:

yes well... they always mentioned a special gaming router... and this looks just like a gaming router:p
600MHz is good news, hopefully it will actually be clocked at 600MHz and not lower due to stability issues like the RT-N16.

It's the SOC (system on chip) with central mips core.
So what you get is what you see in the block diagram;)
so it shows you, just as usual: some different busses and connectors, build in qos and tcam and even 2 VoIP channels.
nothing wired or wireless yet:D

That's a little weird from ASUS, RT-N76U => RT-N66U since they already announce it, but it could be. Since RT-N76U was Broadcom chip that means RT-N66U "has to be" Broadcom, i doubt its a real 600MHz cause they're chips are always underclocked so far, but 1GB RAM its really awesome :D

Yes well... as far as you can clock it too 600MHz and it stays stable I'm ok with that:p
1GB is going to be a difficult upgrade... since they probably use 2 memory chips, so...:p

From Asus press release at CES 2011 (January 7, 2011):

==============
The RT-N66U dual-band wireless router from ASUS brings to the fore a new generation of super-fast connectivity with up to 450Mbps per band simultaneously.

This makes the RT-N66U the gamer’s choice, ...

...includes hardware NAT to alleviate overall system load by relieving the CPU of background netcode processing.

indeed, if that's actually true, I'm impressed:p
that means no swap needed:D

I do wonder why they chose for a 600MHz cpu only. I mean, it's not by far as fast enough to save a file on the disk with 110MB/s:p

Nice, much better chance of excellent support then,

Better than the ralink based N56U, which seems to be getting rudimentary support now.
But is still in a less advantaged position...

I'd still love to know what that port you pointed-out is.

I love the power switch, looks a lot more rigid:)

Might be a slide switch?
or maybe something that has to do with voip?

but my best guess is a button for wps, since the other button is probably the reset button:)

RT-N66U Kernel version is 2.6.23, EXT4 not official supported yet, it may work... ("EXT4 was released as a functionally complete and stable filesystem in Linux 2.6.28") according to:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=86437&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15

http://svn.dd-wrt.com/changeset/17355

The "256MB" from RT-N66U are really weird but soon we will see, i guess that's not the final product yet with 1GB annouced.

Yup. What do you think about the 1GB => 256MB ?

well... I'm not certain.
Perhaps asus realized that 1GB is a bit of an overkill for a router with just 600MHz cpu... Yet 128 is just plain old RT-N16 style and they notched it up to 256MB.
imho 256MB is still quite a lot for a router. I'm running so much on my rt-n16 yet I only manage to fill up 128MB of ram with a little on the swap.:p

Yeah 256MB it's quite alot like you said but i think we all prefeer 1GB. :D

Concerning the 600Mhz of the router, i just hope we can have a good improvement on the USB ports (transfer rate) over RT-N16, cause it's the same MIPS74K arquitecture, and i really don't know if 120MHZ are gonna make so much difference.

The router has 1GB RAM DDR2 according to ASUS, that's why im in doubt :-D

I'm sort of... confused:p
they say the rt-n66u is not going to be released in europe because it won't stand out among the competition...
instead they will be building the rt-n57u for european markets with usb 3.0:confused:
why usb3.0? current routers hardly reach 10MB/s on some protocols :p

nothinrandom
08-09-2011, 06:36
If you zoom in more, you can see that it can't be 200ish mb as there are only 3 characters. I don't think they would write down 200...200 what? First is a 2, then comes a G...then B/b. I believe this is actually 2GB of DDR2 ram.

Anyway 82.90 is not 69€ bahh. You will see when it come out don't expect less than 200€. RT-N16 has a great price in your country, are you talking about store or retailer? Where you buy that price? Here the lowest price is 94€, like i said before is the same as 94 dolars. It was always like that, at least in my country.

true, but it's not that much more;)

I primarily use this dutch site when buying computer parts. not only they have news and a forum, they also have a pricewatch. many webshops are signed up with it since its also a very good way to make money themselves:p

http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/242860/asus-rt-n16.html

it's the biggest tech site in the Netherlands, and every month they get 3.5 million unique visits, from a country that has only ~16 million people:p

Sounds like a black diamon version?:o
dunno

I mean these prices are just from sites that can pretty much ask anything for it because they know people want it:p
In the end, I do expect it to be around 150 euro for a start, the black diamond one.

The ROG label makes everything more expensive tho. Still there is no info about the actual perks of getting an ROG version. (apart from the 1GB ram guess)
It might be even possible that asus is giving us 2 designs to choose from:confused:
who knows:p

Now the router has 128MB great :D Maybe when it comes out has 64MB... LOL

First tests:

with beta firmware:
LAN to WAN - 510mbps
WAN to LAN - 548mbps
2.4ghz down - 56mbps
5ghz down - 89mbps
no time to test vpn

What a disapointment, RT-N56U has almost the double benchmarking with Ralink CPU 500MHZ or even Linksys E4200 with same same CPU from RT-N16 (BCM4718), weird stuff. :S

It could be but, RT-N16 is not BETA and the performance its alot worse than E4200 or even E3200 (same hardware but with less RAM) :S So...

And according to the Broadcom CPUs work at xxx Mhz and at the end they are always capped / slower frequency.

They have different kernels and drivers...
TheMir0n also worked on something called FastNat (originally made by broadcom). It speeds up the lan-wan a lot: http://code.google.com/p/wl500g/wiki/News

fast-nat module (originally from Broadcom, use 'nvram set misc_fastnat_x=0' to disable it)
it has some compatebility issues tho, but most of them should be fixed

Only the logistical data has been imported.
Funny thing is that a dutch shop sells it for 135 euro: https://maxict.nl/product/3288267/asus-wl-router-asus-rt-n66u-n900-router-450mbit-gigabit
That online shop is considered to be relative expensive (averagely) compared to other stores here:p
Going to ask them when they expect it to arrive:)

I'm impressed by the wifi speeds:)

and to be honest... 11MB/s isn't that bad either. What I want to see is the EXT3 performance tho, it's more lightweight I guess.

I will wait for your bought, after i see the results with USB transfer rate i will decide :D I just don't want to expend 150-200€ on a router that only transfer more 2-3mb/s than my RT-N16, i don't need 5GHZ wireless so...

Well in reality RT-N66U is just to "play with" because with that money i could buy other ATOM board and transform it in a wireless router :D

Yes well... it won't be running oleg the first day I guess. lly and themir0n have started working on it for a few weeks now already tho:)

true true, get an atom board of 50 euro, get an extra ethernet adapter to hook up to a switch and you're pretty much done.
But, I doubt an atom is able to reach proper wireless speeds. I've an asus 1215n with an atom D525 (the crème de la crème of atoms pretty much) and the pci-e bus to my intel ultimate-n 6300agn card is just too slow, cpu reaches to the top and I'm only able to reach a fraction of the speed I could get with that wireless card:p
On wired speeds it will be allright for sure but you'll always have the higher energy costs:)

hggomes
09-11-2011, 15:19
I guess that depends, im using a Atheros Mini-PCI Express on my Atom Router and its running just fine in range and speed. If you use the same chip of a router i guess it dont make a difference on a ATOM.

I cannot believe this router has a power consumption of 30W (not even a ATOM complete system consumes that), its another interesting point to test / measure.

!gm asked der Doktor Asus(:D) what the speeds are:

http://www.hardwareluxx.de/community/18065931-post14.html

he says the micro sd card slot can handle SD high capacity cards up to 8GB. The router has to be opened up to access it, there's no way to access it from the outside.

I guess the speeds are pretty obvious...

In that case I hope there's no warranty seal:D

!gm
15-12-2011, 15:32
hehe thx bro ;)

but I'm unsatisfied with his answer...
SD cards and readers are specified in classes according to their maximum write speed.

The plan is to buy a UHS-I SDHC Card to gather faster access, than the provided USB-Transfer speeds. Especially for webservers, swapping etc.

The harddrive would only be needed to store media, not programs anymore. This would save energy and (depending of your HDD) noise. :D

If it will support Class 10 - the thing will still be ok...

Lets hope his statements about the "specialized internal power-design" @3:03 are correct - the main thing I care about this is what "specialized" means. It still is USB 2.0 certified, right?

Well actually wireless transmission rate and wireless throughput differ due to technical reasons. They are advertising the router with 450 MBit/s. Thats the max. transmission rate you can get with 3 streams. The real throughput will be around 180 MBit/s. Think of overhead and stuff...

If the wireless client can only handle two streams, you'll just get 300 MBit/s transmission rate and around 120 MBit/s throughput. :)

Do you agree?

specialized design probably means a better power supply, so that harddrives can run directly on the router.

Yes I know that it's theoretical speed, but 200-300mbit/s seem very high. I guess that it's possible if you combine the speeds of both 2.4 and 5.2GHz but they can't be connected to at the same time by most wireless clients. So you'll end up with a basic 100 to 200mbit/s depending on the signal strenght and noise.
On that site they're also quite optimistic about speeds;)

If i were you i wouldn't believe those kind of "benchmarks" at first sight, windows measures are always that way at the beginning it shows high transfers and then it starts dropping the transfer rate, and if you noticed those screen shoots were taken at beginning of transfer ;)

I can do the same with RT-N16, transfer start at more than 20mb/s and then it goes to 7mb/s, nothing compared ah? I would believe it if measured with teracopy for example. ;)

With this im not telling that is not true, what im saying is that probably it isn't accurate ;)

If those measures are correct than it means ftp and http transfer rates would be similar and that would be awesome, crossing fingers.

Then they retook the write-screenshot and the read-screenshot right after the start. :D

Hello there,

I've been considering this router and also Mikrotik RB751G. I recently asked about a comparison between both and I got this response:

comparison is similar like supermarket trolley compared to military hummer

Routerboard is powered by a professional RouterOS operating system, which has thousands of functions, and is running global networks. It is the same OS that's running our high end devices, and has the same functionality.

The Asus device is a home router with a few functions. It's performance is lower and functionality very limited.

Of course, many functions also means steep learning curve, but once you master RouterOS, you have full control and very much power.

What is your opinion?

wpte
19-01-2012, 21:12
all the features of RouterOS... let's call it linux, because it is linux. oleg, which is going to support the new asus router also happens to be linux, like most routers these days all run linux.

Mikrotik... this one: http://routerboard.com/RB751G-2HnD ?
has also a mipsel cpu, 200MHz lower than the rt-n66u. so yeah, Mikrotik will be slower.
Also only 64MB ram while asus has 256MB ram...

they are right about the standard firmware tho... sure it's limited, but install any alternative firmware and you're as free as any router of Mikrotik.

which one is the hummer now?:D
I mean... routers can go as wild as you want, you can build them yourself with a lot more juice, but this RT-N66u sure looks good for a consumer router.

hggomes
19-01-2012, 21:46
Couldn't agree more, @kitus_san: let me guess who answered that question?!?? Mikrotik?? :D

If you were talking about a Routerboard RB1100AH with Cavium > 1GHZ CPU then it's another story, now a Atheros 400MHZ its not camparable to RT-N66U.

apparently hardware.info (a dutch computer related website) has some test results:confused:
http://nl.hardware.info/productinfo/130513/asus-rt-n66u#tab:testresultaten

the router uses around 10-11W, just like the netgear N900. the wan-lan and lan-wan speeds are pretty much the same.

The wifi speeds are however a lot faster on the rt-n66u:)
with a WLAN to LAN performance of 229Mbit/s over 5GHz with an intel Centrino 6300agn card:D
no idea where they've got these results from tho:rolleyes:

saw this last noon... and a second unboxing video too - both really full of trash and duplicate content :o (don't have the feeling sharing it here)

... compares the size of the antennas with that ones ...
Yes, I think much important to have better antenna that more output power of router's transmitter.
And when somebody speaks about good signal around
in the first it the antenna's job...
Better to have 40mW with good antenna
that to have 600mw with poor antenna.

Seems to me RT-N66U has anteenas with good specification.
IMHO

!gm

you're right.
But only from the outside of an antenna you can't deduce how much metal it contains, to transmit. There are several cases, where the manufacturers build huge plastic-antennas containing a little 1cm long cable. In comparison the ouput-power of a outwards smaller-looking antenna was higher.

That means to me, that visual comparisons are useless (unless we'll slice it - but who wants to do this?).

I bought some cheap 50cm antennas, but they where crappy unfortunately:o
When I opened one, it was completely filled with a long metal antenna of fairly thick metal. You'd expect it to work better... but as with antenna's: the bigger they are, the more noise you capture. Bigger is not always better, you just need the right size:)

!gm

arwww, so there's no way predicting the quality of antennas.
Everyone has to test it on its own. :o

By the way, I don't think the antennas, supplied with the RT-N66U are crap, since many people reporting from a great coverage.

What about that ASUS? 20mb/s read / write? Since when?? Not even close...

Impossible 66mhz (or 120mhz => in case of RT-N16 working at 480mhz) doing that over the same CPU arquitecture, the difference between RT-N16 and RT-N66U CPU power its only a few MHZ :(

USB Storage Throughput

SAMBA - 107.2 Mbps (READ) = 10mb/s 63.2 Mbps (WRITE) = 6mb/s

There is no reason for that, 53N its the best networking device according to ASUS and as they say "its wrong thinking that a USB network device is worst than a PCI, or Mini PCI", i don't agree with that cause i have done some testings regarding PCI & USB devices and PCI was always better. But results are really disapointing with 53N, that's reality.

I'm easily able to get over 70Mbit/s throughput, but my laptops cpu is the limiting factor (atom). as soon as I do something like that it will max out a core:D
pings are also really good on wifi: ~1.8ms very stable as well.

I decided to install the download master on a harddisk, and guess what?
I discovered (but I guess someone else must have seen this as well) that asus uses ipkg to install this app.
I took a quick look at the ipkg.conf, and even a bigger suprise :D

#Uncomment the following line for native packages feed (if any)
src/gz optware.oleg http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/oleg/cross/stable
src/gz optware.asus http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/ASUSWRT
dest /opt/ /
#option verbose-wget

by default they use the ipkg repository of the oleg packages:D
Seems like asus favours oleg?:)

I played around with it a bit, but it doesn't work as well as on oleg:(
I installed samba35 instead of the build in samba and managed to add another 2MB/s on the windows 7 transfer speeds!:)

I am using Firmware Version:3.0.0.3.102 on the ASUS RT-N66U, and at first ipkg seemed to work well, I could install openssh, bash and a couple of other things.

But as soon as I rebooted some changes disappeared which was to be expected since I have not yet found how to save volatile changes.

That's really bad news, ASUS should be shame of such anoying FW problems from the beginning and we don't know how much more will last, it's riddiculous that 3rd party FWs work better / more stable than the official ASUS FW.

Only the HW part its good here, what a disapointment ASUS software development, specially from a "High End" product support, 150€ its alot for a router with so much problems :(

If we take a look in the past we can see the RT-N56U example, that at this current date continues with random WAN disconnects and other problems never solved by ASUS so far, it was a 3rd party FW from Padavan that fixed it and others more. I'm afraid thats the same destiny of RT-N66U development will be, a real fiasco.

well it runs stable mr gomes :p
it's just that it's locked down. also the mounting of the opt partition is not like in oleg or any other wrt firmware.
instead of using a partition asus uses a folder on the drive as mountpoint. since this firmware is ment for people that don't use alternative firmwares it is the correct choice, since they won't know how to make partitions etc.
it's the easiest, and a sufficient solution for this group of people.

the firmware is still a bit beta-ish, but still, most of it works. as an engineer you can test a lot, but not everything. real feedback comes in as soon as a product is released. and you can see asus is working on it.

so I really do have to defend asus here on this: the firmware is quite allright, and is perfect for the market (people) the firmware was designed for.
so far it hasn't crashed, or anything, so I'm happy with it so far:D

I use WiFi between my router and NetworkMediaTank for looking movie from NAS connected to router.
I have around 4 Mb/s with SAMBA and 6.5 Mb/s with NFS(TCP).
The condition in air is good and I have same results on both bands and with 20/40MHz of the wide.

Only 1 router turned on at a time
Download a file via wifi from a pc
Put the wifi client very far away :p (about 7m trough 3 walls) so hardly any signal is captured from the client
Set the Wi-Spy up at 2 meters distance from the router

Le RT-N16 with oleg @ a whopping 400mW:eek:

Le RT-N66u with asus fw 3.1.0.3.90 @ only 40mW:cool:

Apart from the fact those mW don't really do much, the rt-n66u has about 5dBm more strenght:D
btw, I drew a yellow line trough the average line measured by the software... since that line is near to invisible in the scaled down version of the image I drew the yellow line.
so the yellow line is about the average +-1 dBm I guess :)

Yeah tomato is working fine, WAN to LAN and LAN to LAN tests are > 700MBps, so that shouldn't be a factor.

In your specific case, speed could be limited by many factors:

1- QoS enabled (you should disable it)
2- Distance of computers to the AP (RT-N66U)
Are you at 2.4 or 5GHZ? What are the computers wireless NICs?
Are you wireless connected at what speed? 54? 150? 300? 450?
3- Cat6 ethernet cable installed? (Between RT-N66U and TS-119P+)
I believe it could be the problem, some Cat5 cables could connect at 1GBIT but performance its a mess. I had several problems with that, check your cable and replace it. Even if your cable is a Cat6 try a different one.
4- You should do the same tests via cable, computer (cable cat6) => RT-N66U => nas (cable cat6), that way you could know the maximum speed of your network.
You should have more than 50mb/s, then wireless could reach normal speeds. Your wireless speeds are being limited by the cable, for sure.

PS: RT-N66U maximum USB transfer rate reached by me was 17-18MB/s (read/write) in FTP and 15-16MB/s in Samba. It's not brilliant but its OK for a router, don't expect more than that from this hardware, i never thought it could reach those speeds considering the specs.

probably you should enable jumboframes
main issue - MTU on lan interface, which is ok for bcm57xx ethernet driver (unlike et driver used in older, like RT-N16/N15U), but it's in bridge with wireless interface which can't do MTU > 1500
~year ago I got ~250Mbps with RT-N16 ftp without removed wireless and patched et driver

Hi, that was the USB transfer rate, i corrected to "USB transfer rate" lol :D Jumbo frames are enabled and they not affect the limited USB transfer rate...

Any news? Does lly has the RT-N66U already?

3- Cat6 ethernet cable installed? (Between RT-N66U and TS-119P+)

cat5 is also good enough for gigabit, although some shops sell bad cat5 cables.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twisted_pair#Most_common_twisted-pair_cables
I prefer cat5e cables for gigabit though... but when the cable is long I'll take cat6:)

Also I think the wireless transfer speed depends a whole lot on your client wifi adapter. I had a very shitty one in my laptop that couldn't even stream a mp3 file most of the time, yet it was branded as 802.11n, and it had a broadcom chip:D

Personally I have had the chance to test CAT5 and CAT6 cables and these lasts are better. I tested 5 different CAT5 cables and none could achieve CAT6 speeds, not to mention that 3 of them could not do even do 100MBIT. Cat6 cables have higher bandwidth, so they are recommended to avoid problems on gigabit connections. On this right moment im connected with a CAT5(E) and Gigabit connection works fine, but i loose 6mb/s comparing with CAT6 cable.

We are not inside the CAT5 cables, so no one knows if it is a "good" or a "bad" cable, it's more safe buying CAT6, for sure you won't have any problems.

Now about the wireless nic N you talked, what model is? That's really weird, the best speeds that i could get was with Intel and Broadcom chips

I know, as I said: bad cables:D
I have cat5e cables when they're up to 3meter, easily max out gigabit, but longer than that I have cat6;)
all my cables are belkin btw. dunno, I usually trust belkin with cable stuff, other things... not that much :p

I had this one: http://www.azurewave.com/product_AW-NB047_1.asp
just horrible, absolutely horrible
now I have this beast: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/wireless-products/centrino-ultimate-n-6300.html easily >100mbit/s on the rt-n66u for actual transfer speeds:D

;)

Are you sure Azurewave uses Broadcom chip? LOL
I have a Broadcom N (BCM4331 on chip) and a Intel 6300 N and my results are pretty the same.

yep, because router's lan mtu is still 1500.

Any news? Does lly has the RT-N66U already? We have one possible contributor in Moscow, but no news so far

about wireless transfer speed,
just got 150Mbps up/down on RT-N16 with intel 5300 and latest svn

ASUS reply to my email:

"Hello Hugo,

I apologize for the issues you are having with this router. Are you currently using .102 firmware? There was an issue when updating from .84 to .102 which is why firmware 102 was pulled from the website. However, 106 will be coming out within 2 days. I don’t believe 84 was officially released anyway so unless someone provide you with firmware .84 then this issue doesn’t pertain to you. Please give 106 a try when it is release on Wednesday or Thursday and let us know if you still experience issues.

Best Regards,
Mason"

Step by step I will check each chain of my configuration.
I really appreciate the detailed advice. Thanks a lot.

From what i can see ASUS is not able to fix this router problems and new FWs bring new issues, 3rd party FWs are the way to go...

If we take a look on RT-N56U it was more than a year with WAN disconnects and i really don't know if its already fixed nowdays, i have send several emails with all kind of issues on different FWs versions to ASUS, if anyone has issues with this unit please report it to: networking_support@asus.com

This will help alot so that this unit work better with original firmware.

"During the testing speed performance external hard drive, we are faced with another problem - if the NIC test PC technology enabled Jumbo Frames, the speed of writing to disk is significantly reduced"

jumboframes are just big outgoing packets with MTU > 1500. since wireless interface, bridged with lan ethernet are bridged, router can't receive such oversized frames. so, client OS should negotiate client-router mtu properly.
so, in general, jumbo frames are useful for client-client networking only, but not client-router, especially if there's no 1Gbps upstream link.

@ArCan: I also have a QNAP NAS. You should firstly check the transfer speed of the NAS when it is directly connected to the PC via Ethernet. Then you will know the limits of your NAS. Be sure you will not get Gbit speed.

Or is there no micro-SD Slot on the platine?!

You need to open the unit and remove the screws. Your warranty will void if you damage sticker.
