Yes, exactly - use this firmware http://oleg.wl500g.info/wl500g-clear-nvram.trx
Just flash it using firmware restoration utility and give it a chance to boot (i.e. wait for a minute). After that flash your normal firmware.

Does it make sense or is it possible at all to do the same with the WL-HDD?
Can I use the WL500g firmware to that effect?

reason:
I suspect having some weird settings hanging around after flashing
WLHDD-1.9.2.7-4.

In particular, after the flash I could not access WL-HDD's web server.
Capturing with Ethereal showed some IPv6 packets flying around.
Err on my side or reality?

Original: fw 1.2.3.4

Used recovery too to flash 1.9.2.7-4.
Settings restored to default , but not a real confirmation
Not able to shut down pressing the front button during 5 seconds
(no access via web, but some network activity detected)

Restored fw 1.2.3.4
Settings restored to default
1.2.3.4 could be booted but behaves differently from initial situation.

Oleg's customized WL-HDD (1.9.2.7-4) does not support this kind of actions yet but it acts like a normal WL500g alike firmware
