I loaded DD-WRT onto my router so that I could use it as a client to pick up my wireless connection and provide it via wired connection to my xbox 360 (so I could avoid buying the Microsoft Wireless Adapter).

I get really bad interference on 2.4GHZ and I just came across a thread where people talked about how they had replaced their mini PCI card in the router (https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=51041). I have a router that can broadcast on 5GHZ which I have found (via my laptop) to have a much better connection/speed.

Today I purchased the IBM 39T0081 a/b/g Wireless Mini PCI Card (Atheros chipset) from ebay with the intention of running on 802.11a @ 5GHZ. On the forum someone claims to be running on 802.11a and he does not mention changing the antenna. Is the factory antenna for the WL-500gP compatible with 802.11a or will I need to purchase another antenna?

I was also wondering if it would be possible to modify the router to operate on 802.11n? I've read that this requires two antennas. So would I just need to buy a compatible mini PCI card and mount an extra antenna? This way I could take advantage of the non-interference on 5GHZ and the speed on 802.11n.
