First thing:is the disk formatted?
Next, you should check the dmesg command to see what has been detected, if any, and where it is being mounted. You can enter dmesg either in a telnet session, or you can enter it in the System Command window if you are running Oleg's firmware.

If you know how to log into the router and if you can click on the System Setup menu, then click on System Command, you'll find a text box where you can enter these letters: dmesg (then press Enter).

You'll see a large amount of text, copy the last 30 or so lines here.

That's because you're not running Oleg's firmware but the Asus default one.

OK, I think I understand what you wrote now.
You're getting an error message about not having sufficiant access permission.

When you're running the Asus firmware, you only have the option of using ftp.

This entire forum is about Oleg firmware.
Here's the entry point for WL-500w (http://wl500g.info/forumdisplay.php?f=102).

Here's the general starting point for installing Oleg's firmware (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=1984) on WL-500g/WL-500gx, I don't know if that's different for WL-500w, I guess not.

Sheesh you're quite fast.
You can go into USB Application > Samba, make the appropriate changes, e.g.
Samba File Shares: All Partitions
Default Access Level: Read/Write
Host Name: WL500W
Workgroup Name: <same as on your pc>
DOS Codepage: <pick one>

and press Apply > Finish > Reboot.

You're welcome :)
I must say, you're making great progress.

About your last question: I think you'ld need to install the ipkg samba for that, so if you're feeling brave enough you could try that. I must warn you though, you'll need some basic experience with Linux or it's going to be difficult and confusing for you.

I'd say count your blessings and leave it like it is now :)
Congratulations!

You'll probably be interested in using some torrent client like transmission.
I'm not a big fan of torrents so I'm not using transmission, I'm sure you'll find plenty of topics on transmission on the forum.
