Wouldn´t it be nice to have write acess to root while it is still readonly ?
With UnionFS a ramdisk or usb drive can be mounted transparently over the readonly FS to let it look like it would be writeable. With a USB stick it should also be persistent.
Maybe this is a good replacement for the usual Ramdisk ?
