Looking at this as an upgrade from my current SMC Barricade box, that serves an HP printer, connected by USB 1.1 . My question is: if I plug a USB 2.0 HDD box onto the Asus unit along with that printer, will the disk be throttled down to 12 Mb/s? Anyone know whether the two USB ports are independent or on a common 'hub'? Thanks.

USB reserves channels for each device, so your HDD will lose performance if you hook-up an USB printer as well, but not much.

Search this forum for benchmarks on HDD, wireless and network performance.

I had thought that mixing USB 1.1 and 2.0 devices on the same hub caused a default to 12 Mb/s for all devices on that hub vs. 480 Mb/s. I can understand that having two devices attached would affect throughput vs. only one, my concern was slowing the HDD down to USB 1.1 speed by having the printer attached to the same hub unit.

Well, I am pretty sure it works this way but if you want to be sure, you're better off doing some googling because this is a pure USB2.0 question and has virtually nothing to do with the WL-500gx.

my HD enclosure runs at about 2mb/sec on USB1; fairly unusable

Have you tried it with the GX under USB 2.0? And I suppose the question would be if you also attached a printer would the disk box 'downshift' back to USB 1.1 speed?

They make USB 2 'switches'; websearch for 'cypress multi-tt USB'. This might be the solution; attach the printer through one of these, and the hub presents to the GX at full USB 2.0 speed so there's no downgrade.
