Hi,

I have a question about the bandwidth management. I'm currently running firmware 1.9.2.7-3c on a wl500g, and I can’t understand the bandwidth page 100%.

There is “Download Policy List” and “Upload Policy List” on the Basic Config (which is the only page under bandwidth management) page. You have IP Address, Port, Max.(kbps) and Min.(kbps) under the download policy list table.

My first question is what is the Min.(kbps) column good for? I mean, you can’t set the minimum speed you want out on the internet, that’s for sure ;)

My next question is this; why is it not possible to specify IP addresses in the Upload policy list? I only have Port, Max.(kbps) and Min.(kbps). What if I want to restrict the upload speed on one specific IP?

Thanks for answering.

Hi,

the Min column means that you will have at least x kbps at your disposal to download. In other words, downloads from other users will be slowed down to ensure that user xyz has enough bandwith to download.
For more explanation, see attached file.

My first question is what is the Min.(kbps) column good for? I mean, you can’t set the minimum speed you want out on the internet, that’s for sure ;)This has to do with the reserved bandwidth. Bandwith control gives you the option to vary the flow of data to and from that IP/port between these two values. The min value is allways guaranteed while the max value is only reached when other data streams have bandwith to spare.

My next question is this; why is it not possible to specify IP addresses in the Upload policy list? I only have Port, Max.(kbps) and Min.(kbps). What if I want to restrict the upload speed on one specific IP?This is because the internet consists of too many ip addresses for you to handle. Mostly you will configure the streams that have low priority like KaZaA/Bittorrent (or high priority like VoIP). These streams consist out of lots of concurrent connections to IP addresses of total strangers, therefore the IP addresses are not interesting for bandwidth management to control.

If you still feel the need for total control of your bandwith you might want to search this forum for 'wondershaper'. This is a script which will allow you just that.

Oki thanks! I understand the point behind minimum kbps now, but I still like to have an option which says that local IP 192.168.1.xxx will not be permitted to send more data out on the Internet than for instance 15KB/s. That was my though behind the max uploading pr IP list :)

Well since its not in the webinterface: See the last remark in my previous post.
