Bekijk de volledige versie : Lost connection with parallel printer

Hi everybody

I have a WL500g and tried to install a parallel printer (Canon BJC4100) on it.
Installation went well apparently and printer appears in printer list. Further it works well for some remote orders like head cleaning, power off, and the like.
However, as soon as I try to actually print a page from an application, I get a popup message telling that the connection to server has been lost and that job will be deleted (with as usual no other choice than OK). Even after clicking OK, the message pops again 5 seconds later... the only way to get reed of it being to restart the PC or suppress the printer.

I'm running with firmware 1.8.1.7 (as shipped) under W98SE.

Any hint to have printer work ?

Thanks in advance

What printer driver are you using? Asus' LPR or Oleg' RAW (custom firmware only) method.

I suggest you try the RAW (A.k.a. JetDirect) method. This works with most printers.

B.T.W. When windows is popping-up printer messages and you can't delete a job from the joblist, then restarting the 'printer spooler' service using 'Administrative tools->Services' should suffice.

Sorry, but I don't understand which driver you refer to. I use the relevant Canon driver, installed as told in WL500g manual (first locally then on remote port shared installed by Asus printer wizard).
Do you mean I should switch to a custom firmware embedding a specific way to install printer port sharing? If so, which FW?

Thanks, but I told that I'm runnung W98SE and this procedure is only valid for XP. Using a kind of task manager (Systernal) I can kill spooler process, but not restart it...

Does you printer work OK when you attach it directly to your workstation?

Sure your printer cable is OK?

Does you printer support remote printing?

With W98 you can indeed only use the "Asus remote port", unless you install some tool to add TCP/IP printer ports (hp supplies such a tool). You can then use LPRServer or RAW mode, depending on your WL_500g firmware.

You may try configuring your printer (spooler) properties in another way, for instance disable bidirectional support, do not check port status before printing, change print queue settings)

I use the relevant Canon driver, installed as told in WL500g manual (first locally then on remote port shared installed by Asus printer wizard). So you use the Asus LPR method. This only works if you printer is listed in the printer compatibility list on the Asus website.

Do you mean I should switch to a custom firmware embedding a specific way to install printer port sharing? If so, which FW? If your printer is not listed there I suggest you use a custom firmware v. 1.9.2.7 CR3c [Oleg] (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=1614)

Then you have to setup the printer under win98se using the manual in the FAQ.

Thanks to both of you, Brubber and Styno. I now understand that W98 has no native service for LPR printing, and that Asus utility (printer wizard) only implements a selective LPR spooler (only for listed compatible printers).

Styno, I have installed the rc3 firmware, but you tell "setup the printer under win98se using the manual in the FAQ" and the FAQ refers only to XP/2000 install. Does it mean that I have to install a driver for LPR spooler?

Do you know any 3rd party Freeware that implement such a service? (I don't know if HP jetdirect is freeware and if it will work with a Canon printer)

Thx for your help.

I just did a Google search and found this thread on ExpertsExchange: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win98/Q_20803030.html

It has the following download link to the 'HP Standard TCP/IP port driver': ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/hpspm98.exe

That should solve your problem.

I've tried it, but it did not work :(
The result was worse than with Asus remote printer wizard. I did not even get the printer to react to any command (It reacted to simple commands - head cleaning...) with Asus.

Still google-ing to find another driver for virtual printing.

Have you tried ports 9100 and 9101? Because different firmwares switch USB and LPT between those two port numbers....

For the rest: I hope you've read the FAQ topics about it...

Yes, I read the FAQ... (assuming that reading and understanding are 2 different things :D )

And this raises a question : you refer to ports 9000/9001 (not only in this thread but also in some other) and the FAQ seems to refer to 9100/9101 (found also in Oleg's thread about FW 1.9.2.7.CR3c)

Which one is good?
(for sure, I could try all port numbers, but each time, my PC freezes completely and takes 10 mn to reboot...)

Side question: It seems I cannot get reed of the "remote port" installed by Asus utility. I can delete it 10 times, it is still in the port list at the next reboot. May it interfere with the HP std TCP/IP port driver?

My bad: The port numbers are 9100 and 9101. Allways trust Oleg not me :o

Sorry for confusing you.

I must confess I was a bit fed up with this W98 installation  , then I took my laptop (under Win XPH SP2), and tried to install that damned printer...
It went well at the first time and works without problem, using the process described in the FAQ (Kudos for the FAQmen), i.e. with native XP TCP/IP port and LPR settings. :)

The bad is that I have 4 other PCs in my network, all running W98SE, and at least 2 of them wont support XP... thus still in the need of a working solution with W98SE :o

I think with your firmware and W98SE you will have to use LPRServer. Check out this post for the configuration: http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?p=7328#post7328 (If I am correct queue name is CASE sensitive)

This works fine for me (WL-500g, fw 1.6.5.3, 3*W98SE and 1*XPPro, HPLJ 3020, HPLJ 5L)

AFAIK RAW printing is only supported in custom firmwares

I also have the ASUS remote port and the HP standard TCP/IP port active on one computer, and I can use both of them next to each other.

Thanks to all of you, I finally managed to have it working satifactorily... or at least it looks like so
I tried so many things that it is impossible to say why it works now in the present config, and what was wrong before...
I finally used HP standard TCP/IP port set as LPR server for W98 and XP TCP/IP port for XP machines, using custom FW 1.9.2.7 RC3c.
I uninstalled the Asus Remote port.

Now, I will attack the secondary effects problem : switching to the RC3c fw, the wireless connection between laptop and WL500g doesn't work anymore (or, yes, it works with no protection - open system/no encryption. As soon as i change from this, Intel proset reports connection impossible without any detail...)
But this will be another thread :D

just a line to say everything is OK now
