I'm running FW 1.8.1.7 cr3 on my wl-hdd (should I ask this question in WL-HDD forum ? tell me) and I have the following issue :

My wl-hdd gets its fixed IP through a DHCP server present on my LAN.
The trouble is after booting, I still see 192.168.1.1 in /etc/hosts.
As Samba seems to use this entry, nmbd won't start.

Why is the hosts file not updated after boot ? Is it a firmware bug ?

This is not a bug, it's a feature. Assign static IP address to your wl-hdd. Treat this as requirement for samba.

Thx Oleg.
As I use fixed mac attribued IP addresses at home (even for the wl-hdd), I hoped it could also work in this case.
Plugging the wl-hdd at my office could then have be more easier (zero configuration to access it through ssh & web)

Anyway.
I will switch to static IP.

Sorry to be stupid and off-topic, and I know this doesn't apply here, but that has got to be the most classic line..

Don't sound too much like Microsoft now. :)

Yes, exactly. This is classic line. :)
It's fixable but requires that someone fix this.
