hi.

I have a router set up for just plain simple internet.

wireless & cabled.

connecting via cable is smooth.

connecting via wireless is not quite so smooth.

It's the old story; it's been fine for ages, and "suddenly" is just doesn't really connect.

I can find the network, but it has poor connection (2bars out of 5)
when I try and connect, even with encryption off, it just tries and tries to connect, and then gives a 'windows was not able to connect etc etc'

and that's it...

I haven't got the possibility to test if it's the Wlan card, but will see if I can find someone else with a laptop and wless access.

could it be something in the router.. . or should I look hard at the Wlan card?

Perhaps try this:

1. Get NetStumbler (http://www.netstumbler.com/).
2. Install and run it.
3. Use it to check the wireless LAN signal strength.
4. Move your laptop around with the program running to see if it makes a difference.
5. In the case where it appears that the connection is unstable, try to test it with another laptop or a different network card (USB, PCMCIA or ExpressCard) to rule out an incompatibility issue.

Also, it is best to provide more information (i.e. what is your wireless LAN card? How far away is the laptop from the router? Are there any coreless telephones operating on the 2.4GHz band?)

Try another wireless channel. (one that is not used by you neighbours)

I'm also having some trouble with my router, the wireless connection is disconnecting too many times, although the signal strength (the "bars" on the Vista GUI) seems ok.

Could it be due to having some neighbour using the same wireless channel?
