in telnet, run twonkyvision like this:

./mediaserver -D

It will work after closing telnet

Be sure to change config to save the database at a proper folder and to set your media folders

Hi!

You already have the Mediaserver running on the wl-hdd?
Would you be so kind, and post a quick howto for a user like me, who has never done anything with linux before?

Which firmware should be used on the WL-HDD for this surpose?
Where has the Mediaserver Distribution to be placed on the HD?
Is there a way to start Mediaserver each time, the WL-HDD is powered on automatically or is that done manually only with telnet?

PLS help...

regards,
hal.

Making a how-to would be too long.

Look for oleg's latest firmware, download Wl-hdd version, and set a post-boot command to run media server. If this does seems feasable to you then you are set. Otherwise, be wary: this is not a simple path.

okay, thank you anyway.
sorry to say that, but it seems, youīre not interestet in helping us very much in this case.

just imagine: there are non linux users out there, which donīt know, how to set a post-boot command...
and it seemed to me, that this community used to be very helpful...

iīll give it up here and try anywhere else.
but thanks again for the pieces of help!

Is there no one out there who can tell a newbie how can I do this.

How do you think I've learned? I was a non linux user 5 month ago. There is enough info on this forum for you to search.

For your information, this forum is not the official support forum for twonkyvision software, I have been helping another member by mail for one full week about this software, and I have actually a baby crying on my laps so no, I don't have time for an how to.

Your first lesson about linux comunity:
be nice, patient, and just realise people here have a life, and are not here to write you a FxxxING how-to just on request.

Mediaserver is a commercial product, and nobody here is supposed to make helpdesk for this kind of product. Are you paying for support? I don't think so. Now that you have pissed me of, you just have to find another wl-hdd user with the same software and enough knowledge to help you. Good luck.

this command must be run from the folder where mediaserver file is. Probably /tmp/harddisk/part1/something
be sure to connect via telnet

thank you,
yes thats right, so run the server but when i cancel the telnet session the Twonky stops. I also have an Linksys uNSLUng NAS Device with TwonkyVision on it (for my wife) here I need startscripts for autostart. When i boot the Linksys the Twonky starts automatic. Is there a way to do this at the ASUS too?
Thanks for your help.

Sorry, i really dont see any reason for you to be pissed off in my posting.
i thought: "okay, this one has some other things to do" and i thanked you twice for the information you gave.
I didnīt know that you are so stressed, because it didnīt seem so, regarding to the frequency of your postings in this forum.
And i also did not know, that you helped some other guy for one week over email.
And i donīt want to discuss this any longer.
I will get me this wl-hdd device and maybe in about 5 months (or longer, because i have to work about 12-14 hours a day besides) i will have a running mediaserver on it...

Greetings Stefan

I don't think there is a automatic run method with Jocky's firmware.
Only Oleg has the necessary file system to allow this autorun thing. The latest version shoudl mount your HD, if it is formated with ext3 file system. Can you afford to reformat your HD? otherwise, you are stuck with the manual lauch solution.

stefan9113
17-02-2005, 06:25
OK, then I will change the Firmware and try to mount the HDD and run the Mediaserver. fromat in ext3 is no Problem, because the HDD is empty. When the Mediaserver 2.5 is running then I will transfer the Musik to the HDD.
Witch Firmware do you think is the best for me?

This (http://oleg.wl500g.info/1.9.2.7-3c/WLHDD-1.9.2.7-3c.trx) one is the latest for you. Please check the forum for how to format on ext3.

You will be able then to set up the autostart

stefan9113
17-02-2005, 08:55
OK, I will try this tonight. Thank you.
Can I formating the HDD (ext3) I the Webinterface with the new Firmware from Oleg.
I will write my results tonight.
Greetings from Bavaria
Stefan

hugo
17-02-2005, 10:32
no you cannot format from web interface. Do this with a telnet interface. If you are unsure, install latest asus firmware for wl-hdd 1.2.3.0 and use web interface to format, then switch to Oleg's one.

Be sure to restore factory default, using web interface, and by pressing the button on wl-hdd for more than 10 seconds, once you have set oleg's firmware (otherwise, it will do a simple shutdown)

stefan9113
17-02-2005, 10:37
OK, you're GREAT, thanks a lot.
Tonight it will be the day where I can here the TwonkyVision on my
Asus WL-HDD :p . I hope so.
I will post here when the Twonky is running. I think you will hear tonight a loud shout from Bavaria.
by Stefan

hugo
17-02-2005, 13:15
well, before shouting, you might have to setup samba :D . If you choose to format using the stock wl-hdd firmware, take a few minutes more to copy your files (mediaserver) on the HD before flashing back to Oleg's, cause it will take some time for you to set up samba under oleg firmware.

stefan9113
17-02-2005, 14:15
uff, one more problem on my way. ok, I think I must edit the sbm.conf right.
I will format the hdd on orginal Software, then I will transfer the files to the HDD and at last I put OLEG'S Firmware on it. Edit the smb.conf. And at last I will start the TwonkyMediaserver. In one Hand a Hammer in the other a Bottle Champagner.
Greetings from Bavaria

hugo
17-02-2005, 14:57
If you do like you say, you won't have to edit smb.conf for now. The file will be already on the HD, waiting to be mounted:

mount /dev/discs/disc0/part1 /tmp/harddisk
then /tmp/harddisk/mediaserver

nice day today, first I update the asus. All ok, telnet open, but login failed.
No way. I reboot the asus, I reset the asus no way to connect in webinterface :( .
Today a new firmware for my OvisLink router is ready for download.
I load it to my OvisLink and now he is dead. Shit. Now a have my good old netgear router ready for Internet to tell you my bad story. I will tell you my results when all my hardware is back in life. :o
thanks for your help

hugo
17-02-2005, 18:29
try no user but admin as password. Also try your old user and password, no user and no password.

If you still cannot connect, and you are under Oleg's firmware, press the button when wl-hdd is running until the led is blinking. After reboot, you will have to set your PC ip adress to something like 192.168.1.10 to connect using admin/admin

stefan9113

and so on

stefan9113
17-02-2005, 18:37

Stefan

hugo
17-02-2005, 19:13
you can try a mke2fs -j /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1
to format with Oleg firmware. Then try again the mount command. It will work but you will have to copy back your files to HD

stefan9113
17-02-2005, 19:19
ok I will try it.

stefan9113
17-02-2005, 19:26

I have now mounted hd1 hd2 und one new Folder from me called Krimis.
How can I transfer now the mediaserver to the Hdd?

hugo
17-02-2005, 20:13
if you have a usb pendrive, use this, in usb port. otherwise, set samba by seting up a /etc/smb.conf

There is a web menu for this, but I don't know what it does.

basicaly, you must have a working smb.conf, then run smbd -D and nmbd -D

Check the wiki page about samba (look at the root of the forum for the link to wiki) and the search the forum for working configurations on how to setup samba.

You can post your test smb.conf, and i'll help you correct it.

the different sections in the smb.conf must refer to a folder onthe wl-hdd.
Using the mount command, you should connect your hard disk partition to each folder. Then you must be sure the folder name is the same in the smb.conf.

From that, you can run smbd -D and nmbd -D

If it works from your PC, you will have to save this for further reboot.

You can also copy your mediaserver file and run it from the telnet interface.

stefan9113
19-02-2005, 18:17
no way,
I can mount the /tmp/harddisk
I edit my smb.conf
and start smbd -D
and start nmbd -D

and result, nothing. Hmm?
I dont know what I can do now.
I think it's better for me when I go outside and put my head in the snow.

hugo

what do you mean by nothing?

Do you connect using start - run on your PC then typing

\\192.168.1.1\usb

stefan9113
19-02-2005, 19:38
Hi Hugo,
when I boot the WL-HDD new, then is the edit smb.conf delete. This means, I make the smb.conf with the vi. When I reboot the ASUS there is no smb.conf. I dont know what happend.

stefan9113
19-02-2005, 19:41
Hi, the smb.conf that I show you is the smb.conf from my Linksys that works great. I edit it, but it also don't work.

hugo
19-02-2005, 20:19
You have to do some special operation to keep the smb.conf after reboot. We will see that afterward. For now, just keep your wl-hdd on until we finish. Please use my smb.conf and no other, using vi, and start smbd -D and nmbd -D as you were doing.

you will seee the share if you connect on your pc with \\192.168.1.1\usb

don't forget to mount the disk on /tmp/harddisk as you were doing before

stefan9113
19-02-2005, 20:25
why connect with 192.168.1.1
my asus have 192.168.1.220 and the pc 192.168.1.14

hugo
19-02-2005, 21:12
ok then it is \\192.168.1.220\usb

did you set it to this adress by yourself?

stefan9113
19-02-2005, 21:20
shit,
network was not found
I'm in with telnet 192.168.1.200
I can't anderstand this.

stefan9113
19-02-2005, 21:21

But when I now reboot then is the smb.conf empty and nothing ist mounted.

hugo
20-02-2005, 15:11
hehe, I told you not to reboot until we finish.

Now when you have everything reset to a working state, you will have to edit a file called post-boot.
and another one called .files
It is explained in Oleg's page.

For you, you have to do this when your smb.conf is properly set up:

I suppose your mediaserver file is at the root of your harddisk, otherwise, please change the path.

echo /etc/smb.conf >> /usr/local/.files

mkdir -p /usr/local/sbin/
echo "#!/bin/sh" >> /usr/local/sbin/post-boot
chmod +x /usr/local/sbin/post-boot
echo "mount /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 /tmp/harddisk" >> /usr/local/sbin/post-boot
echo "smbd -D" >> /usr/local/sbin/post-boot
echo "nmbd -D" >> /usr/local/sbin/post-boot
echo "/tmp/harddisk/mediaserver" >> /usr/local/sbin/post-boot

after that, do a

flashfs save
flashfs commit
flashfs enable

reboot, you are set.

You can now edit the twonkyvision-mediserver.ini file in your hd root to your liking.

It should be the end my friend
