cdrw do not support usb mass storage. this is not simple, you would need a standalone cd burning software on the asus or a standard (i do not know of any) to support network burning of cds. forget it.

I rather would be glad if the asus would support using usb mass storage devices as webdav-volumes. So you can use it for read/write access without ftp-software.

Wouldn't it be possible to use packet writing, and
mounting the cd volume rw like any other volume?

the pktcdvd kernel module that converts a CD-RW disk into a regular linux block device(from http://web.telia.com/~u89404340/packet.html)
What is needed to support packet writing in linux? I think it needs support compiled into the kernel.
(DVD-Ram would be better yet... 4.2 GB storage  )

i do not know how much CPU it will use, but I think it will be too slow

also there is not much interest for it, as an USB case is costing not very much these days
