Hello

I hope my english is good enough to explain my problem.
I connected a Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 to my wl-500g an the ready light is on. I use the internet explorer to view the router menu. I enabeld all activex settings.
In the router menu I pressed the preview button. After this I got the message that the installation of an activex control element was stopped because of security reasons. After this I choosed to install the activex element manually. But there I get the following message
The software was blocked because the publisher could not be verified.
Name:netcam_mfc_activex.cab
publisher:unknown publisher
I hope my translation will be understood.
If I use netscape to try this, I only get the message "image is not ready" and nothing else.
I donґt know what the problem is, because the logitech quickcam express seems to work on other wl-500g routers.

Has anybody some solutions for me?
Thanks a lot.

did you consult the manual on your issue?

if you follow it exactly it works

do not use netscape/firefox/mozilla for this as it will not work as expected

eventual add your router to the 'trusted' sites

Thanks for the fast help.
I added my router to the trusted sites. But there was no change. Then I consulted the manual again an checked my settings but all were fine. So I enabeld also the whole activex stuff in the internet (and not only in the lokal intranet like in the manual described). If I now click the preview button I can see a black picture and I got the message "couldґt connect to server".

What settings are wrong?

it should work, are u accessing it internal or from outside?

cu4xs
29-05-2005, 12:15
Iґm not sure that I understand what you mean with internal or outside accessing. The computer is directly connected via ethernet to the router. I just tried to view the picture in the router menu by clicking the preview button. A new window with the address "http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_ShowTime_Widzard.asp" opend. But ther I got only a black screen independent of having the camera connected to the router or not.
What is the problem, I have no idea.

After clicking around and changing some settings the cam startet working but I donґt know why.
Thanks for your support Antiloop. :o

Hello

I would like to buy a couple of webcams, and connect them to my WL500GP, to monitor my house when I'm not home. My printer is connected to one of the USB ports, and the other one is currently free.

Q1:
Does all webcams work with the router, or should I by a specific cam?

Q2:
Is it possible to connect more than one webcam, via a USB hub?

Please help me out here.

A2: it is possible to connect more than 1 webcam by using palantir under Oleg's Firmware. The forum provides detailed info. Use 1.1 hub. For 2.0 hub you need to tweak a little bit.

A1: The original FW as well as Oleg's FW support pwc or ov51x driver. Unfortunately these are rather old but good webcams. Check the forum and ebay for Philips PCVC or Quickcam pro 4000 webcams. Newer but low quality webcams use spca5xx driver module downloadable in the forum.

Thanks for your reply.

I have been searching the web for webcams and their chipsets.

Is it also possible to use webcams with OV530 chipset?

@dyinosis: my webcam wont work on my usb 2.0 hub, but when i plug it in directly it works!
On the hub dmesg, says that no valid driver was found! But when i plug it on the router it finds a driver and it works.. So can you explain, what i have to tweak? ;)

It probably works with OV51x 1.65-1.12 (Oleg FW) but I am not sure.

simply run the command "rmmod ehci-hcd" to disable enhanced 2.0 USB. If you want to have this forever save&commit&enable the fs.

I put my Logitech Webcam in usb of the router. I am going to the definitions of the router and and I enter in the menu web camera. And there I click in the option "PREVIEW".
The new windows is open and I only see a gray box.
What is my problem?
Is it necessary to configure some thing the more?

Thanks,

Hi folks,

I've just been searching the net, trying to get the above camera working with my wl500gp with Oleg's FW.

Can anyone plz give me a hint on how to install spca5xx (LE ?) on it ?

Installing ipkg install wget http://weimarnetz.de/ipkg/packages/spca5xx-le-webcam_1_mipsel.ipk

fails due to kmod-videodev and libpthread are missing... where can I get it ?

Thanx for a hint and/or tutorial :-)

Thx

Почти нашел ответ на мой вопрос. Это qce-ga.sourceforge.net. У меня именно этот кам. Если бы кто нибудь помог мне вбить этот драйвер в мой Асюс, а то я так себе с Линуксом вообще, а с Асюсом в частности.

Dear all,

I have enable the WebCam to be accessed by WAN, my boardband upload speed is 128Kbps (about 14K/s) , whenever it takes me 9 seconds to refresh the image of video. Anyway, I have tried to capture the image from the video, it is a 225Kb bitmap file (If I save the bitmap file to jpg, it becames 47Kb file only). Anybody know that if the video have any compression in the transmittion process from Lan to Wan? Or any way to tune up the speed of video's refresh rate?

buffer overrun... I guess there is no protection in it.
the problem is, when this happens, you're webcam might be a bit broken.
the sky high cpu useage can be because of the webcam monitor.
has dcam a high usage?
I use a limiter for the max fps it captures, to make sure it doesnt get too high:)

Me too.
Months of searching for webcam and no success.
At Internet auction sites a lot of new, old webcams.
Nobody knows board code name.

Just for tests, pls name and give web link to working webcam from ebay
or another place.

The "rcamd" in fact raise cpu to 100% and keep there until i disconnect the camera.
All i get in logs is the buffer error ...
The image from camera is ok, with no artefacts.
I dont know if is normal, the 100% use of cpu is if camera is accessed or not, when i plug the cam, no matter wich settings/resolution i use ...
I use 2 sec refresh time .

One nice question.
Could you ask ASUS t stop marketing thir products as webcam enabled
and this is not he case.
using code names for webcam is not a good idea as along as Asus is not retail distributor of the same products.

I have already visited many computer shops, ebay, other nternet auction places and there is no chance to buy webcam fit for Asus.

Contacted Asus support team many times and they were very helpful for me
but what I get is a list with codenames and names for webcams in computer shops.

Asus , marketing thweir poducts as webcam enabled in cataloges
generates many trouble and stress to customers in spe, spending hours, days, weeks on tests, which one webcam is the right one.

Recently got from China a long list of webcam poducts - 100 items or so.
So how can I remotely which one is fit for Asus.
Thanks.

yes I know... the 2seconds is for the website to refresh
the actual webcam almoast takes 4 fps wich kinda overloads the cpu.
the real way to lower the frame rate is this:

killall rcamd
rcamd -s 4 -f 640x480 -p 7777

this thing is quite tricky
type
rcamd -h to view all the options
this thing now refreshes every 4 seconds, so that's 0.25fps wich lowers the cpu to about 15%;)
I told oleg about it already, because rcamd isn't a demon, so it's really tricky to start, and it's not stable when you start it yourself.
I had some huge investigation on this, but I still not have a proper webcam working, I can watch it tho... but it only works for a day, then I have to restart.

I don't use any usb hubs, it's directly plugged into the router's usb port. I'll greatly appreciate any info on that matter , so will others , i think.

Well, things are ok now. I've managed to run the camera on my wl500gpV2. Apparently Oleg's v10 firmware lacks the rcamd so I uploaded the modified fimware from some Czech guys with updated wifi driver and support for USB CDMA devices. It's based on Oleg's v10. This firmware has the rcamd , which works with my OV511 based Puretek PT-6007. So this might help other v2 owners as well , but i don't guarantee it. Here (http://koppel.cz/cdmawifi/download/171/folder_listing?month:int=11&year:int=2008) is the link. After that follow this (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=16226) tutorial to drop the load from the CPU. All the credit goes to the Czech guys.
Cheers.

I unpacked a brandnew wl-500gP to check webcam feature.
I only get black/white colors with a Logitech QuickCam pro 3000 webcam.
original Asus SW (1.9.7.7) driver is pwc8.8.

Shouldn't the webcam feature display colors (more than b/w)?

I spent months looking for color webcam to work with Asus.
As webcam is multimedia streaming device - frame by frame with internal frame buffer, it should work alike gps device.
One issue is transcoding, API and tranfer rate.
Mayby Asus processor is to slow to handle video content real-time ?

On the other hand, one can set 1s refresh time so it should work giving enough time for one-frame image de/compression, processing and transfer.

What about Wifi IP enabled webcams ?

There was another guy in the dutch forums saying his quickcam pro 4000 only shows black and white on the original firmware.

On oleg my quickcam pro 4000 does work with colours tho!:D
maybe you can give olegs firmware a shot then;)

and yes, the mipsel processor is too slow, since the minimum specs of the webcam is a celeron 500mhz processor.
But with 300mhz (overclocked) I can get about 4fps@640x480, thats pretty nice:p
reducing the resolution also works to increase the fps.

didn't found any software to capture it tho (like a security feature).

with lowest resolution with orig. Asus SW I get color pictures.

I kicked in Oleg and get color with all resolutions even VGA and a newer pwc9.02 webcam driver.

Hi,

I owned an ASUS WL-500 premium router (V1).
My "project" is to connect a webcam and an usb-stick to the ports and

1) let the router take a snapshot at high resolution (maybe 1600x1200 (2mp), but 1280x1024 will do the job, too) every XX minutes and stores the image (jpg?) to the stick
2) use a lowres version of that picture to provide a traditional (password protected) webcam-page to the internet

the connection from the WL-500 to the internet must initiated by wlan (WPA encrypted possible?) to an access-point or a second WL-500 (this one can take another picture from another view as a second step)

My questions:
- is this possible?
- which firmware (e.g. asus original, openwrt, dd-wrt, oleg, others) would be the best choice for these requirements (I am not aware of cmdline and vi editing, but if there is a fast solution... ;-) ?
- which (actually in stores, not that expensive) webcam will work and fulfill my needs (high resolution that works with the router)?

thank you for your attention and your answers in advance

regards,
bit

Yeah it's posible.

Any supported by OLEG and OPENWRT camera can do that.
You can write script to take photos every xx minutes.

You can write php script to provide lover quality photos on web page.
The best for that will be openwrt with 2.6 kerel but on oleg You can also do it.

If you will chose openwrt i can help you with that (i have experience with UVC)

best regards

Not sure if resolution higher than 800x600 is possible.... I think 800 x 600 is max.
If you aint got experience with commandline you should use oleg, but theires no way around commandline anyway its just less painfull with oleg (better guides, a basic webinterface and less painfull USB setup).
I can recomend old Philips webcams but as i said they will only work @ 800 x 600 max even if they support 1024 x 768 in windooze.

hope i could help

Hi,

thanks for your answers.
@thejew: I like cmdline, no probs with that :-) Why is it not possible to get pics higher than 800x600?

@all: I put the MSI Starcam racer (1.3MP) and the Logitech Quickcam pro 9000 (2MP) into choice, does anyone have any experiences whith these devices and e.g. openWRT?

thanks in advance,

I have ... Quickcam pro for Notebooks (2MP) - vend/prod 0x46d/0x991, openWRT-kamikaze_8.09_rc2(openwrt-brcm47xx-squashfs.trx)
I think, that it is possible, if you start a stream page with USB stick.

Hi there

Tried to use a very old cheap cam on wl500gp v2:

Vendor=0ac8 ProdID=301b Rev= 1.00
Manufacturer=Z-Star Corp.
Product=PC Camera

Figured out that I should use spca5xx (or LE?), so I downloaded it from another post here and did:

modprobe videodev
insmod spca5xx.o

dmesg gives me:

usb.c: registered new driver ?
spca5xx.c: spca5xx driver 00.60.00 registered

next I plugged the camera into usb (without hub), dmesg gives:

hub.c: port 1, portstatus 103, change 0, 12 Mb/s
hub.c: port 2, portstatus 101, change 1, 12 Mb/s
hub.c: port 2 connection change
hub.c: port 2, portstatus 101, change 1, 12 Mb/s
hub.c: port 2, portstatus 101, change 0, 12 Mb/s
hub.c: port 2, portstatus 101, change 0, 12 Mb/s
hub.c: port 2, portstatus 101, change 0, 12 Mb/s
hub.c: port 2, portstatus 101, change 0, 12 Mb/s
hub.c: port 2, portstatus 103, change 10, 12 Mb/s
hub.c: new USB device 00:03.0-1.2, assigned address 6
usb.c: kmalloc IF 816fd7c0, numif 1
usb.c: new device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
usb.c: USB device number 6 default language ID 0x409
Manufacturer: Z-Star Corp.
Product: PC Camera
usb.c: ? driver claimed interface 816fd7c0
usb.c: kusbd: /sbin/hotplug add 6

and lsmod gives (which seems the webcam is recognized):

Module Size Used by Tainted: P
spca5xx-00.60.00 577560 1
videodev 8312 0 [spca5xx-00.60.00]

However my problem is in /dev, there is no 'video' or 'v4l/video0' folder created properly which is required by webcam apps normally I suppose. :(

Anyone please help? Thanks a lot!!!

On my WL500gx (Oleg 1.9.2.7-10 firmware) I've connected a digital handycam that I thought I could use as a webcam. It's a Panasonic NV-GS11 that supports webcam mode. Unfortunately, I can't get any setting to make it work as a webcam.

When I press the Record button on the camera, it says "can not operate".
Any hope for this setup?

Also tried an HP Photosmart R707 digital photo camera, but that doesn't even open its shutter, I guess it doesn't do webcam mode. Same thing for HP Photosmart R967.

Well, I'm at the brink of giving up on surveillance here.
OK, so I can't get the handycam or the HP cameras to work. So I went and bought a Microsoft webcam, which I remembered got a decent review. Model LifeCam VX-1000, because it is on the Linux-usb (http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/search_res.php?pattern=webcam) list as working, but even with the correct driver, it wouldn't work.

So then I traded it in, this time a Logitech QuickCam E2500 since all you folks seem to get it working with Logitech cameras, for lack of availability of the 4000. When I plug it in, dmesg says

pwc Philips webcam module version 9.0.2 loaded.
pwc Supports Philips PCA645/646, PCVC675/680/690, PCVC720[40]/730/740/750 & PCVC830/840.
pwc Also supports the Askey VC010, various Logitech Quickcams, Samsung MPC-C10 and MPC-C30,
pwc the Creative WebCam 5 & Pro Ex, SOTEC Afina Eye and Visionite VCS-UC300 and VCS-UM100.
pwc Default image size set to vga [640x480].
usb.c: registered new driver Philips webcam
pwc Philips webcam decompressor routines version 9.0-BETA-2
pwc Supports all cameras supported by the main module (pwc).
pwc Adding decompressor for model 645.
pwc Adding decompressor for model 646.
pwc Adding decompressor for model 675.
pwc Adding decompressor for model 680.
pwc Adding decompressor for model 690.
pwc Adding decompressor for model 720.
pwc Adding decompressor for model 730.
pwc Adding decompressor for model 740.
pwc Adding decompressor for model 750.

but still no joy, there's only rcamdmain running, no rcamd being spawned. Needless to say, Preview from the USB/webcam admin page doesn't work either.

So I tried to install motion. It apparently depends upon mysql, which won't start:

[ERROR] Fatal error: Can't open and lock privilege tables: Table 'mysql.host' doesn't exist

I'm not that familiar with mysql and can't seem to get that working in a hurry.

Besides that, motion will start in daemon mode, although it could never work, as /dev/video0 is missing.

Like I said, I'm about to call it quits here. Is there a way out of this?

Just found a whole line of webcams from Pleomax named PWC xxxxx.

Example http://www.evomag.ro/produs--Samsung-Pleomax-Camera-web-PWC2000--9175.html about 20$.

How could we tell what driver they use ? :)

well it's a PWC chipset... so it might work
there is no way to tell if it actually does, there is just a good chance it does:p

on the wiki page of the linux PWC driver supported webcams:

I have a WD mybook (1TB) as well.
All I know that it works on oleg firmware, I never tried it on asus firmware.
it's indeed very strange it think it's a webcam:confused:
must be a firmware issue I guess...

you can try to switch off webcam support, then the firmware usually doesn't load the webcam drivers, so it might recognise it as a different type of device:)

Hello
I have a Asus Wl-500 GPv2 and I want to use a Logitech Webcam Sphere AF.
I put Oleg firmware on it : http://koppel.cz/cdmawifi/download/171
Can anyone help me mount this webcam or provide other viable solutions?
I want to use this router and this webcam like a video surveilance solution, and I have to connect on the second usb router port a Huawei 3G modem.

Thank you and I am looking forward to your answers

Hello all I am new to this whole router flashing business, I have purchased a router (Asus Wl-500g V2) I have flashed the router with a Mega build from this site http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=99564#99564 about half way down it shows the download link.it looks like below.

dd-wrt.v24_RC5_std+nokaid+voip+vpn+micro+mini+micro-usb-webcam-mod-0.3-build-2007-11-26-0919.7z

Well I have flashed this and I point to the routers IP and I get the ddwrt panel. then I follow all this guys instructions but I dont get anything.

Is there anyway that someone can help me with this maybe another method or something. Even if it is starting from scratch any thing will help perhaps a tutorial or something.

Once again my goal is to get a Logitech quickcam 4000 hooked up to the router, it is for a school proj. any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks all

Just flash the recent version of this firmware http://code.google.com/p/wl500g/ , and your quickcam pro 4000 works like plug and play.

What exactly do you want to do with it?
