Hi!

I have bought an asus wl-500gP v1 several days ago, and I can say I'm satisfied with my choice. I choosed it because I have hsdpa USB modem and I wanted to share this connection. I'm using the modified oleg firmware by koppel. ( the latest one, WL500gp-1.9.2.7-10-USB-1.70a.trx)
So far so good..

Then I plugged an external usb hdd drive ( WD passport 80gb), and the issue is that I'm only able to download through ftp at about 600kb/sec( with samba the same). I have an old pendrive, which I'm able to use at about 3MB/sec, which is quite good, and I would like to achieve that rate with my hdd as well. I've tried mounting the drive with async option as someone stated, but result is the same(low) speed.

Can someone help me with some link, or hint, please ?

Thank you in advance
grisa

here is the output of lsusb, if it helps. It seems to me, that the device is claimed by ehci driver and it is usb2.0

I forgot to mention that I'm using dlink hub h4 usb hub with external power adapter, but tried without that one as well. same low speed.
(seems that v1 don't need externally powered usb hub?)

Hi!

I switched my firmware to openwrt kamikaze 8.09 RC1 (2.6.25 kernel) and it seems to solved the slow usb problem for me. Id did not try 2.4.x kernel upgrades (in koppel/oleg was 2.4.20 ) maybe a newer 2.4.x would have solved the problem as well.

Anyway it might have been a particular problem with my usb drive, because another usb case + another drive worked well with koppel 2.4.20 as well.

grisa, what is the ftp speed with openwrt and passport drive?

Hi Serpent, and All!

With wifi, it's quite slow at the moment (around 1.3-1.5 MB/sec), but I understand it because of the WPA2 encryption and/or maybe the not very stable b43 under 2.6.
The wired speed is around 2.8-3.0 MB/sec, which I am quite comfortable with.
With two hard drive mounted in wl500gP, and telnetting/sshing into the router I was able to transfer between the two at around 4 MB /sec. So I think I reached the limits of the router;)
hdparm ( not the cached ) read time was around 13MB/sec
I did not do any tweak.

to ALL: Is there any experience with kamikaze 8.09RC1 with 2.4 kernel?
I'm considering the switch because of the unstable wifi.

Ohh, I forgot to add that with vsftpd AND ALSO with samba, I got the same speed: constant 2.8-3.0MB/sec

Hi Grisa,

I also have an assus asus wl-500gP v1. And I tried kamikaze 8.09 RC1 (2.6.25.17 kernel) with the openwrt-brcm47xx-squashfs.trx image. Everything works OK, but I don't get wifi working at all.
Could you paste your /etc/config/wireless? Or tell me how to configure?

MY dmesg log:

Hi squantom!

here is a quote of one of my previous message:

^^^^^^^^

So, wifi is unstable at the moment. After several 10 mbytes of traffic, it drops and the router has to be restarted.

If you are interested, you can try current kamikaze trunk. You should manually apply some patches. It is described here:

http://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=17307

Some of them had some success but after some day it started to become unstable, so I believe still some work has to be done.

I havent tried it this way, though.

Everything in Kamikaze 8.09 RC1 is ustable.
dhcp dont work correctly(after dhcp ip renew, udhcpc restart interfaces and close all connections, for me its every one minute!, even it's the same ip, this bug was reported one year ago and nobody add fix to current build!)
transmission package is bugged (crash after run and you cant kill it!)
installing programs on harddisk connected to the router dont work correctly
wifi sometimes crashes

I used it two weaks ago on 2.4 kernel.
