I've made new firmware available for download (http://oleg.wl500g.info/1.9.2.7-3c/). Check this page (http://oleg.wl500g.info/) for other info.

First publically available firmware with LZMA compresses squashfs. 7zip SDK is used
Fully functional MPPE over PPTP connections, updated pptp-linux to 1.5.0 (thanks to Posader for testing and suggestions)
Tx-Only Idle option for PPTP
Added an ability to specify custom pppd options (nomppe-stateful is usefull with MPPE)
Ntp synch interval is now configurable
Added an ability to view syslog messages in the AP mode, added Syslog/NTP configuration page (use IP addresses, names ae not supported yet)
New busybox applets (halt, mkswap, swaponoff, crontab)
Fixed stupid-ftpd bug, causing incorrect rights specified for newely created files, as well as file is now truncated before upload
Added support for WL-HDD rootfs (thanks to Ulrich for initial patch)
Stupid-ftp should now work with some linux ftp clients (thanks to Ulrich for patch)

Hi,

I am having big Problems with this new FW. I can not connect to my Ebay account, or to a hotmail account.

With the regular Asus 1.9.2.7 i do not have this problems, bus the router does not reconnect after the ISP disconnects me.

Although i tried to flash the old 1.7 FW (including Hardwarereset) the Router displays 1.9.2.7, thats odd, because i had your CR3c before..

Any idea how to get back to the old FW?

btw i do not use WLAN right now

Is WDS broken? With 3b it worked. With 3c it ain't.

There is no way to do so. Instead you could install syslog capable server on your PC and then specify it's address for the wl500g.

If you use WPA or WPA-PSK, then this strangeness is probably due to WPA supplicant software (i.e. vendor utilities). If you're running WXP SP2, then it's probably a good idea to remove utilities and let windows to configure your card.

Have not tried that, as I do not have wl-hdd, but it should work. No kernel image needed, but I'm suggesting to replace at least wl.o and et.o modules. In fact, replacing whole /lib/modules is a good idea.

Don't you think I would get a better speed using the one from the stock firmware? Latest tests from 1.2.3.0 shows a good speed measurement?

Oleg

Latest tests from 1.2.3.0 shows a good speed measurement?
Unlikely. They've got speed increase due to switching to ext3, which I've performed initially. Also, wl-hdd kernel sources is a complete fake.

WDS with WPA/WPA-PSK never worked with 1.9.2.7, I'm wonder why it worked in 3b. If I recall correctly there was no changes in this part in the 3c.

After testing, I had my wl-hdd booting a system. But probably all nvram are false, because I couldn't access it using wifi or ethernet. Usuallly when switching from one to one other, I still get some heartbeat by scanning the network cable. I suppose it has booted, but not set any value.

I leave the next part for the more adventurous, my baby daughter need more attention than my wl-hdd right now :)

Oleg
01-02-2005, 20:20
yes, nvram settings are totally different. this due to the fact, that stock wl-hdd uses semi-complete 1.8 style firmware. :)

First of all: Great work Oleg. Everthing works just fine.

So, I've got a problem concerning my smb.conf. I searched the internet for quite a while, read some forums and then built my smb.conf. All commands seem to be okay, I can access the share via network.
But whenever I copy new files on the share, the filenames are changed to lower case.

I'll just post my smb.conf, maybe s.o. has got an idea what's wrong:

[general]
workgroup = ASD1
netbios name = abc
server string = abc
preserve modes = Yes
preserve case = Yes // Don't change filenames - doesn't (?) work
interfaces = 192.168.1.129/24
mangled names = No
log file = /tmp/harddisk/samba-log.%m
default case = Upper
case sensetive = No
mangle case = No

[wl-hdd]
path = /tmp/harddisk/
public = Yes
writeable = Yes
browseable = Yes

Hello,

That's my first try with a custom firmware ... I was previously running ASUS stock 1.8.1.9. The router behavior has not drastically changed, WAN connection seems to be as reliable as before. Nevertheless, I face two problems:

- I do not have the expected file structure ... most files in /etc/ are misssing (smb.conf, ...) as well as all pre- and post-init scripts ( I have no /usr/local/etc /usr/local/bin, /usr/local/sbin...)

- Apart from that, both my USB stick and my USB2 HDD (Maxtor 120Gb + Cypress chipset powered enclosure) do not work anymore ... they are not mounted, and I'm reported unvalid FAT32 fs or something like that. PReviously they were recognized. Of course no smb nor ftp support ... :( :(

Before spending more time, is there a completely stupid thing I've missed ?? (of course I rebooted, but not resetted to defaults) I've unplugged the power cord and rebooted this way as well ...

Thx in advance !! :D

you need to create those directories/files manually as I've stated on my page. they're optional. smb.conf will be automagically generated, once you enable samba from the web interface.

You've wl500b unit with broadcom radio. Flash wl500b firmware using firmware restoration mode. v2 stays for hardware revision, not for "even cooler" firmware.

Dear Oleg,
thank you very much! Now everything works well, I'm going to test it.
Where can I see reasonable APs?

you need to create those directories/files manually as I've stated on my page. they're optional. smb.conf will be automagically generated, once you enable samba from the web interface.

nobody able to guess the errors based on the "something like that", so post your system log.

Ok, thank you very much Oleg. I was somewhat dissapointed not to find the mentionned folders so I did not keep on reading the rest.

The hard disk works fine now even if I do have some strange logs, it's mounted correctly. I'm not at home right now so no way to post the log. The USB stick, no way so far. I'm gonna reformat it and will keep you posted for info.

Funny story :D :D :D :D : I kept trying during more than two hours the other day with no sucess .... yesterday when I rebooted the external case I found the HDD very silent ... too silent: actually the HDD was still in my PC connected through the IDE cable while I was stupidely trying to mount an empty USB case :D :D :D :D

Cheers,

wl500b v2 and it's probably stated somewhere on the unit as well as in the firmware upgrade page. As for client mode - it's probably not supported with RALink.

Hello,

I'm using latest firmware (v. 1.9.2.7 CR3c [Oleg]) on Asus WL-500G and having problems with configuring timeout - when my router should disconnect from ISP. Tried both versions - with "Tx Only" checked and unchecked and no success  "Idle Disconnect Time in seconds" is 1800. But seems my router does not disconnect from ISP for a long time when there is no internet usage at all. Here is a part of my log:

From here you can see 2 problems:

Feb 9 08:30:16 PPPoE: connect to ISP
Feb 9 17:38:35 pppd[82]: No response to 6 echo-requests

seems that router was connected to ISP from 08:30 to 17:38 - this is much more than 1800 secords :-) I can guarantee that nobody was using at this time as I am only one user and I wasn't at home at all :D

and the second problem is that after long period connected some problems somethimes comes (Timeout waiting for PADO packets) and after that pppd just exits and then I need to reboot my router before I can connect to my ISP and have internet again.

Maybe somebody could help me with suggestions what can I do to avoid these problems?

Thank you!
P.S. I'm connecting to ISP through PPPoE and it is configured (entered all login information) in router site to connect automaticly.

Have you specified DNS server addresses? This is required for idle to work and is stated on my page... It will not work with auto setting.

Seems I did not read your site very carefuly  and my DNS addresses are autoconfigured. So I will try to add them manualy and then will see what happen. Thank you very much Oleg for your help!

Now is Feb 10, 18:50 and no disconnect for a long time again. DNS names are configured manualy. I'm attaching screenshot of my configuration:

http://wl500g.info/attachment.php?attachmentid=317&stc=1

After I configured my router with these values, which you see in attachment, I have rebooted my router and this part of log, which you see above is already using this configuration. So what could be here wrong?

Thanks!

ok, post the output for

cat /tmp/ppp/options.wan0

Also, 1800 seconds is about 30 minutes, and most likely traffic is still going. Try changing this to 300 seconds (5 minutes) and check if it helps.

Well at all this time from 9:00 to 18:00 my computer was turned off and this is only one computer who is using internet through router. Wirelles activity is also almost impossible as I've added mac address filtering and log also is emty:

Mode : AP Only
Channel : 11

Stations List

here is options.wan0 output:

[admin@(none) /]$ cat /tmp/ppp/options.wan0

BTW if Tx Only is checked on then all activity from internet side is not counted yes? Timeout should occur after 30 minutes of no activity from LAN / Wireless side?

I tried your Firmware 1.9.2.7 CR3b and CR3c but with both of them i can not connect to www.ebay.de with firefox, with the IE i get the mainpage of Ebay.de, but when i want to log into my account i get a DNS or server failure.

with the original Asus 1.9.2.7 i do not have this problem (bit connection Problems with WLAN and dying connection)

i also tried to insert the DNS Servers from my ISP manually, but it is not getting better. (with the original Asus i use the same DNS Servers...)
Do you have any suggestion?

Well, in fact this looks like a tcp mss problem. Could you please type this

iptables -I FORWARD -p tcp --syn -j TCPMSS --clamp-mss-to-pmtu

and check if this helps. If it does not help - try decreasing mtu setting in the web iface - set it to something like 1200 and try again.

Also, could you please type

iptables -L FORDWARD -vn

and post results here?

nothing happens (neither a "done" or any result with my ebay problems

after using

iptables -L FORDWARD -vn

i got a message: iptables: Table does not exist (do you need to insmod?)
I rebooted the WL500g and after the reboot, i was able to get to my ebay loginpage (but not further)
i reduces the MTU to 1200 and repeatet everyting twice, but at the end i do not get my ebay login page anymore.

Firewall is enabled, but i have not made any changes after the factory reset.

i use the Wl500g as HomeGateway.

Edit: Disabling the Firewall is not helping...
Edit2: with the IE i get the login page of Ebay again, but no successfull login.

I'm working for an Austrian ISP and we had several probs with mtu
-> but rather on sending data than on receiving.
-> IE works fine, mail receive also
-> sending small mails without attachments worked fine
-> sending mail with attachments kickedd the a***

changing mtu to 1492 worked fine for sending mails->
(buggy firmware on some routers!)
changing the mru...well if nessesary....but it should work fine with the defaults.
I rather think it's client-based (some FW or AV on your machine?)

yeap, you are right. either i even do not get to that page, or i am not able to log in there. (DNS Failure with the IE, or Document contains no Data with Firefox).
Login to a hotmail account fails as well, and i get strange smtp-messages when sending mails.
The Strange thing is, that i can make it work, when i use the original Asus Firmware (1.9.2.7) but there i have problems with my WLAN and sometimes the router looses te connection to my isp.
Now i am testing the 1.7.5.9 CR5, and at least Ebay seems to work fine.

this firmware is pretty awesome thanks, almost as good as 1.8.1.7-2a, but it still has a few bigpond issues. It boots me off the network once or twice an hour for about 5 mins...and then reconnects me automatically!

Every firmware where i have to enter the heartbeat IP address manually, does the same thing!

1.8.1.7-2a and 1.7.5.9 CR5 are the only exceptions where in don't have to enter a IP address, and they are the only two that pretty much work flawlessly!

interestingly enough, i turned router off overnight, and turned it on this morning, and found bpalogin running twice, with the ps command.

just rebooted router again, and now bpalogin appears in the list only once!

it seems the longer the router is turned on, the more cases of bpalogin appear?

Alex, the problem is that my firmware does not mount your harddisk automatically, you will need to do it yourself using the post-boot script. The easiest way is to add these lines to it:

#!/bin/sh
nvram set usb_storage_device=1

This should trigger mounting your drive in 10 seconds and launching ftp/samba.

What does the router do with OOB (Out of Band) packets?

I'm having problems getting any punkbuster game to work. I have tried router with and without firewall turned on? Does it ignore OOB's?

Thanks

HI.

I have a problem with the router and the printer(hp deskjet 5652). In the past two days in the system log I get this info

Feb 22 16:04:30 kernel: lp_wait_ready timeout
Feb 22 16:04:30 kernel: lp_write timeout

When I turn on the printer she prints the latest printed document. It's in Raw port 9100, USB.
I've readed a similar problem in the previous fw version.
Any news about this?

My fw is 1.9.2.7-cr3c with wpa-psk my wan(2 asus and 1 toshiba) and lan has 3 laptops :D and 2 desktops.

Thanks.

HI.

I have a problem with the router and the printer(hp deskjet 5652). In the past two days in the system log I get this info
According to your log you are trying to print via parallel port using either port 9101 or LPR.

kiboko

the printer is connected by usb, port 9100 in both asus laptops. No other laptop or desktop uses the printer.

Problem solved. A friend of mine who also has a wl-500g and has configured his printer in parallel mode has come to my house with his laptop. I believe that was the reason why the router act like this. I've restarted the router and now everything is ok.
thanks.

Well, looks like corrupted packets. Also, the receive signal is too strong - -28dB - have you changed output power somehow or attached external antenna?

Device: WL500g
Firmware: 1.9.2.7 CR3c
Problem: MPPE required, but kernel has no support :-(

I try to connect to ISP over VPN connection.

My options.pptp file:

Files pap-secret and chap-secret exists and are correct.

Adn I start my connection with command
pppd pty 'pptp 10.4.0.254 --nolaunchpppd' call quadra updetach

This that I see:

Warning - secret file /tmp/ppp/pap-secrets has world and/or group access
Warning - secret file /tmp/ppp/chap-secrets has world and/or group access

This is not an 1.9.2.7-3c log - either you've not upgraded firmware, or it does not belong to wl500g at all. Is this peer (server) log?
1.9.2.7-3c supports MPPE/MPPC out of the box, no manual actions required at all - just select PPTP.

I have a problem with this firmware. It looks like that router doesn't connect to time.nist.gov (there is nothing in the log that says that it even tried to connect), so my time in the router is: Fri, 02 Jan 1970.

Another problem is the log:

This is your firewall log.
I beileve that space was missed after DROP in sources, and DROPIN is a bit cryptic IMHO.

So it goes.

I have a problem with this firmware. It looks like that router doesn't connect to time.nist.gov (there is nothing in the log that says that it even tried to connect), so my time in the router is: Fri, 02 Jan 1970.
I had the same problem. After I changed time.nist.gov to time-a.nist.gov it worked fine again.

Looks like it was a problem with time.nist.gov last weekend. Since 3 am monday it returned to normal (at least as I see it).

So it goes.

Hi,
i have first time problem with Client mode at ASUS. I have WL-500bv2 and I upload the firmware WL500bv2-1.9.2.7-3c.trx. But after login to web interface and go to Wireless>Advanced, then don't show the settings for client mode, only items: Hide SSID, Fragmentation Threshold, RTS Threshold, Beacon Interval.
In the Admin web console after command "nvram get nobr" I become answer "1" > is Ralink, but after command "wl status" I become answer "wl driver adapter not found".
I have total 4 ASUS in client mode set up, but this one with v2 modification doesn't work. Can you help me, please?
