I am using a USB/1394 enclosure I bought a couple of years ago, and I can't get the 500g to recognize it. I think it is a driver problem, but would like your advice.

The enclosure is based on a shuttle chipset, although I can't read the label to get the specifics.

I think the "...not claimed by any active driver" is the trouble, but I don't know if there is a workaround or a new driver to install (not that I know how to do that yet).

After some careful inspecton, I have determined that the enclosure has a Shuttle Technology USBAT-02 chipset. A driver is available here:

I believe I need the patch that works with the 2.4.20 distribution available on the download page.

Note that this driver should work with a host of usb card readers, mp3 players, cameras, and other devices.

I am still relatively new to linux--can someone help me install this? I'm not sure what I need to do.

Why do you think your device is supported by this driver?
I've revewied the code and appears, that this driver supports 0x4e6/0x1010 devices, while yours is 0x4e4/0x1020...

While the code is different (1010 vs 1020) the chipset is the same: USBAT-02. I cracked the case of my enclosure and checked it out.

The 1010 is also a USBAT-02.

I'm not sure how drivers work--do they use that code to identify supported devices? If so, then the driver may not work.(Actually both devices are 0x4e6/0x10?0, so I was hoping that was close enough)

I have contacted the driver's author...hopefully he will get back to me.
