if the download link is 'broken' access it using this url:
http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=1505
thus access the URL thread first, then click the link. Be sure you are using the http://wl500g.info url

currently the apache servers checks for this, I'm already looking into this to change it.
Or if you use some dumb firewall (internet security or other crap) then it will or can fail as well.

So... I'm nearly sure the problem is there!
I've tried different fw from intel until the last one, and different params (both on the router side and the laptop side) but nothing help to solve the ptoblem!

Finaly, I'm waiting for a new fw release from intel... perhaps this could help!

Does Oleg could give us his advise?

I think problem in firmware.
In 1.8.1.7-3 - everthin ok
in any >1.8.1.7-3 - bad
return to 1.8.1.7-3 - all ok.
It means that problem in firmware

I've notice same as you... with 1.8.x.x fw and previous, there was no drops/break in wireless connections... but that doesn't mean that the new fw implementation from asus is wrong... even if I really suspect it :D

Perhaps are there issues with wirelles and centrino in general!

... another thing yet: since I notice this problem upgrading to 1.9.X.X, I really think it has something to do with this "little note" wrote in the change log...

Note1: Using this firmware on WL500g, the range of wireless transmission will be shortened because of the power of tx is lower.

I'm sure someone knows something!

If i don't change anythig - only firmware that mean problem therу is
and i think in this "WMM/WPA2 Support.
3. Add: Bandwidth Management "
after upgrade >1.8.1.7-3 my notebook can connect only one time and then never can connect again! Notebook even can obtain Ip from DHCP.
After downgrade - notebook can't login, get IP in 2 sec.
And you Spot think thay problem in notebook wifi?

The problem is probably due to the fact, thet Intel's drivers does not handle WPA2 correctly. I've no problems with prism54 gt based card.
Try switching to WEP only...
Centrino wireless drivers are most problematic drivers ever...

Just think that the problem could be more accurate with intel centrino...
I have a second laptop connected with a topcom 54g wifi card... This one link without no problem!

Also, I connect my pc with no encryption at all (just control acces with mac adress)... so not sure that problem have something to do with wpa2.

i'm using a centrino based notebook too with an Intel 2200BG wireless card.
The drivers 8.1 worked OK. Since the 9.x version intel supports WPA2.
Only the driver 9.0.0.60 (w29n51.sys) works for me even in combination with ProSet/Wireless 9.0.1.59.
I'm using ASUS FW's 1.9.2.7-3b or 1.9.2.7.

Great thanks to you... trying to find driver on intel site, I found something interresting in "known issues"...

The subject doesn't concern me directly (because I don't have network bridge connections) but the effects are identicals. Desinstalling previous proset utility software and driver, and reinstalling driver only (to use with windows zero config utility) , I lost some components (the Intel WLAN Transport network component).

Now, reinstalling the complete package (utility + driver), the connection stays active with no drops! "Ouf" :D

A centrino notebook has a few requirements of chips and modules used, to be a centrino notebook. One of those requirements is a INTEL wireless card, without that particular card the notebook is NOT a centrino notebook.

Do you use Windows XP Pro SP2?
Did you uninstall the Intel PROset wireless software?
Also uninstall the Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connector from the device manager!
Reboot the notebook.
Install both the driver and PROset software.
Check the existence of the new driver (w29n51.sys) in the drivers directory and compare with the install directory.
Now use the Intel ProSet wireless software for setting up a profile.
Use WPA-Personal with AES-CCMP and have the same settings on the WL-500g (WPA-PSK with AES and 86400 for the rotation interval). Use the same Pre-Shared Key (for example: a1b2c3d4).
Suc6.

MAV,

I just finish several tests with intel's fw. My best results are reached with 8.1.0.28 driver bundled in the proset 8.1.0 software (found on intel site).

It connects immediately to the AP (without long dhcp resquest) and never disconnects. For even best results, I set output power manualy to the max.

The problem is that WPA2 is not supported in this version.

May be could you find your issue with that one, like me!

Good luck.

I try different firmware WL-500 and wi-fi driver in any possible combination.
I think that:
1. No matter what a wi-fi driver.
2. WPA encyption ( TKIP or AES) work only in any firmware <=1.8.2.4

if use 1.9.*.* can connect with Share key or simple WEP

It's look that problem in emplementation of WPA2 ( cause it software feature)

I agree with you. The best results are with ProSet 8.1.0 and driver 8.1.0.28. Second best with the ProSet 9.0.1 and driver 9.0.0.60. BAD results with ProSet 9.0.1 and driver 9.0.1.9.
So if you want top results take 8.1.0/8.1.0.28. If you want good results (but worse than version 8) take 9.0.1/9.0.0.60.

MAV,

Sorry your problem can't be solved...

But I confirm the following config is perfectly working (even with WPA-TKIP encryption - I just test it for you):

ASUS wl500g with Oleg's fw 1.9.2.7-3b
Centrino laptop with intel's driver 8.1.0.28 (and wi-fi card 2200bg)

So, I think that if you have this fw and driver installed and experiment problems, you should search somewhere esle for solving it!

And be sure, like jbrvb said, that uninstall and install proccess have correctly be done. I already experiment that updating intel driver failed... Check it under hardware properties.

Also, if you're sure having tested all this correctly, I think I can't help you further

Both the firmware's 1.9.2.8 and 1.9.2.7-3b are working great with Intel 2200BG and 8.1.0/8.1.0.28.

MAV; If i were you, i should be installing this intel combination on your centrino the proper way.
Then i would reset the WL-500g to factory default with the reset button and the menu option.
Reboot the ASUS and do a firmware upgrade again, with either the 1.9.2.8 or the 1.9.2.7.-3b and start from scratch.

Forget about WPA2 for the moment.

Thanks for advice. I do that you say ( jbrbv & Spot ). But Problem still remain.
If i used 1.9.2.7-3b & 8.1.0/8.1.0.28 - only WEP 128 bit can connect after 60 sec. ( WPA-psk + TKIP don't work with 100% signal)
If i used 1.8.2.4 & 8.1.0/8.1.0.28 - connect in any possible encryption way ( now i used WPA-psk+TKIP)

both, i've read about some weird problems with wireless cards and sp1 (or sp2)
but can't remember anymore where I read it

so it is possible that something got mixed up during updating windows/drivers

Excuse me, jumping in.. From SP1 on WinXP has some good WiFi support.
IMHO WinXP Pro SP2 is even better for WiFi (WPA) if you load all the patches after applying SP2.
So start with WinXP SP2 and the Intel ProSet 8.x.x versions.

true I join you in that statement, but I talking was about SP1 + Intel stuff, but that problem could be solved already As I don't know anymore where I read it..

You're right, the early versions were BAD. The latest v8.1 version is/was good. Now with the v9 version they can improve a lot....

:(
It is a pity but I have brought back my WL500G to the shop and got my money back.....
I tried everything to get it to work properly, searched any avenue on this forum, tried all the firmware combinations from ASUS and Intel but it just would not work reliably :( :(

At the start the connection is great, icon says excellent connection 54 Mbps but within 5 minutes it drops to 1Mbps and drops the connection after an other minute or two, reconnects and the story starts all over again.

It is a shame because I loved the feature set that was ever expanding with the help of Oleg and the other contributors.

Can someone send me a mail when there is a new version of the router that works as advertised???? (and keeps doing that).

Back on my old Linksys with 11Mbps but reliable!!

The problems with the connection are exactly the same as i was having when using Intel's PROset/Driver combination 9.0.1/9.0.1.9. No matter which ASUS firmware i used. Even with LinkSys WAP54G i had the same problems.
Intel's PROSet/Driver 8.1.0/8.1.0.28 are good in combination with most ASUS Firmware's.
Have you been reading this thread from page 1 on?
Can you give us a description of your setup?

My set up is quite simple, WL500G and my Laptop (Centrino 2200BG).

I used all versions of the firmware from ASUS and Oleg with 1.8 and 1.9 Intel versions. Testing cost me a lot of time and was very frustrating. It also did not matter if I used WEP or WPA etc....

Even the connection I tested from a normal PC with a WL100G would not work reliably. Anoying that PC is my music pc and could not play a full CD over the network, stops in the middle.

So my gues it is the router, I am typing this on my couch with the same laptop but a 11b Linksys AP.

As I said a pity, I liked this router and features.

I use voip for my telephone. Everything worked great with firmware 1.9.2.7 3. But with 1.9.2.8 beta the voip was unable to login the server. I changed the firmware back form 1.92.8 to 1.9.2.7 3 and I could call again and the voip is registred again. I use the same settings form both firmware's

you can not compare a custom firmware with a beta firmware, they do not carry the same functions

try firmware 1.9.2.7 to compare with firmware 1.9.2.8

perhaps using another channel would have helped you.. a lot of times it has been proven that channels below 7 can cause problems

There are some problems with compatibility of AP's with Centrino, according to the Intel website, changing the advanced settings Power management and Transmit power, change these to MAX instead of default.
Look at the picture in attachment..
This does the trick for me.

You're right i'va faced this problem....

However my Centrino 2200BG works great with my WL500g, regardless of the Asus Firmware version or the Intel Proset version. Currently i'm using the latest intel Proset, and everything works fine.

The only thing that happens is that i can not use passphrase for wep keys, i have to use hexadecimal digits, otherwise any attempt to connect will fail....

Hello!

I have a question on DDNS, does this firmware has support for No-IP DDNS service?

tks

vox, I would have liked such support as well. This firmware does not have No-IP included though, no. DynDns.org is free as well, so you may consider switching. If not, you could try and get it in custom firmware...

So far for me, and I'll regret saying this if the problem shows up again, 1.9.2.8 beta has seemed to fix a problem I've had (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?p=11259) involving random WPA-PSK drops, but check the thread if you want to see the status of that and I forget to update it here. I would attempt to delve once more into the programming realm after a bit of an absence from it to try to implement No-IP support from some sources of some of No-IP's updating software, but if I were to do so I'd probably wait until 1.9.2.8 was officially out along with its source.
