New firmware and sources are available for download (http://wl500g.dyndns.org/1.9.2.7-3b/). This firmware was not carefully tested, so consider it as beta.

Fixed problems with 1.9.2.7 radius authentication
Fully functional client mode support, just like 1.7.5.9-5 had (i.e. WAN and WLAN interfaces roles are exchanged)
Workaround for broken ISP DHCP servers configurations (solves problem with renewing IP addresses)
Added checks to mount code to not mount the same partitions twice (so, you could now manually mount whatever you want in the post-boot script, and these partitions will not be mounted twice by firmware itself)
Updated dropbear to latest 0.44test4, which includes client ssh now
Replaced default ppp/pppoe stuff with ppp-2.4.3 (includes mschap/mschap v2 authentication support, should work with PPTP servers configured for mschap only)
Various pptp/pppoe related fixes, Tx only option is now functional
Added Idle timeout support, broken in the ASUS firmwares. For now, for this to work you need to manually specify DNS server addresses! To make connection permanent either specify idle timeout of 0 or use auto DNS (this way idle is ignored)
Added support for invocation of ppp custom ip-up, ip-down scripts (should be placed to the /usr/local/sbin/
Fixed problems with "PRINTER: bla-bla-bla" printed to the printer attached to the parallel port
Added simple samba configuration from the web (remember to set LAN hostname, otherwise samba will not work!)

Update: whole zoo is updated to 1.9.2.7-3a (http://wl500g.dyndns.org/1.9.2.7-3/), use it if you've problems with PPPoE/PPTP connections or FTP users problems.

Latest news: updated to 3b: 1.9.2.7-3b (http://wl500g.dyndns.org/1.9.2.7-3b/)

Fixed minor problem with Samba: setting Hostname in the Special Requiremnt from ISP is no longer affecting hostname used for Samba
Fixed PPPoE connection issues - moved to ppp-2.4.2. Added experimental support for MPPE over PPTP connections
Fixed kbps/kbits thing in the ASUS Bandwidth Management (thanks to yato for figuring this out)
Manual DHCP assignment list is now limited to 32 entries (vs 8 in stock)

I suspect problems with your ISP, but I will check on how to increase timeouts/discovery.

Seems to me that there are some problems with the user account list:

I've tried to set private accounts and also an anonymous access whith read only rights (user: anonymous / pass: * / rights: read only) but all these access are dinied!

With previous firmware: when these accounts are correctly setted and when I plug an usb key freshly formatted in fat32, wl500g creates two directories (ftp_pub and ftp_pvt) and subdirectories in ftp_pvt according to private user account setted before... but with fw 1.9.2.7 CR3, nothing happends!

Anyone who experiment the same things?

New firmware and sources are available for download (http://wl500g.dyndns.org/1.9.2.7-3/). This firmware was not carefully tested, so consider it as beta.

Unfortunately, I still have problems with latest firmware [1.9.2.7-3] as with the whole 1.9.2.7 series. I have Asus WL500g, working as home router [SPI, MASQ, AP]. I have two issues:
1) Random reboots [I could to a remote syslogging to see if it has any issues, but if it OOPSes, than it probably won't do a thing] after a while, whenever listening to shoutcast streams. I'm not using any URL filter [ie. string netfilter match], not any special Netfilter rules except standard ones generated by router sw itself [NAT, MASQ, SPI].
2) Random problems with WPA connecting clients. In 1.9.2.7-1 version WPA client couldn't connect at all, in -2 and -3 they can connect but randomly they seem to be connected [radio link active, but no IP packets from AP to client] but no communication appears to be ongoing [ie. as the encryption is wrong]. WEP64/128 on the other hand work perfectly.

If I flash the router back to 1.8 series, all the problems dissapear [and router is being stable]. However, 1.8 series seem to lose connection to USB printers from time to time. Especially if printer was left in some other state then poweroff [ie. if WL500g gets any error from printer saying there were no paper and then printer gets poweroff-ed] such, connection cannot be reactivated [no matter printer state is] except by rebooting the router.

I hope it helps, let me know if you need any specific detail.

After I upgraded my router to CR3, i can't connect to my ISP. Tried hard reset + upload settings form file, but it didn't work.

I put back CR2, did a hard restet, and now its working again with CR2.

Do you have any idea what could be the problem?

The problems is not with my ISP, this issue only appen in 1.9.2.7-3 fw then the WL reboot (I dont know why, I suspect that are another issue).

I this that the problem that not auto-connect ISP are about WL reboot random,
like kreator

If i shutdown the power of my WL and power-up the WL connect auto to ISP

Note1: Using this firmware on WL500g, the range of wireless transmission will be shortened because of the power of tx is lower.

The range has decreased sinths firmware 1.9.2.7
Because I use the follow setup http://wl500g.info/showpost.php?p=3516&postcount=2

I have to use the full range. I Changed the output power but this hasn't any effect

Maybe you can correct in in the firmware?

i have the same problem - the range is very important and is lost on all but 1 wireless client if i change to 1.9.2.7. the beta 1.8.2.4 works fine and is what i am still using because of the limited range on the new firmware.

I think there is a big problem with wireless connections on 1.9.2.7 fw...

Since upgrading to officials or oleg's one, I experienced connection's lost or slower respons in many operations!

Knowing that power output is lower, I've tried different level until max... but no value solve the problem.

wl500g is set as gateway and no encryption is activated, I only use MAC adress control to achieve security.

Here is my config: wl500g in gateway mode, PC1 wirered , PC2 wireless (with US Robotics 54g), laptop1 wireless (with Topcom 54g), laptop2 centrino wireless (with intel 54g)...

Would it be possible that "no encryption" method was broken? (I've not tried encrypted methods yet because I think that It could make more cpu usage)

Have you measured that? How did you know, that it's lower?
Try running tools like NetStumbler to measure output power with old and new firmwares.

Well, have you tried to wait a bit and start over? The problem is probably due to the fact, that previous pppoe connection was not properly terminated, so your ISP refused to authenticate you. I've no idea why "test user" appeared here...

Sorry for this missundurstanding. "Knowing" means that I've read about it on asus technical notes coming out with the downloaded official fw. And so I've tried different values with no effects... that makes me beleve that output power is NOT my problem!

Anyway, I just did a new test with fw 1.9.2.7 CR3 and router acts again as before: surfing on the net (and even on the router web interface) became more slower until I lose my "patience"! :D

I also try to modify encryption methods but with same results.

And like I said before, restoring to previous fw solve the issue.

PS: when I upgrade, I always made a firmware restoration with asus utility and a hardware reset and encode new settings manualy)

When the distance is the same and I use the OLD firmware (1.8.1.7 CR3) the connection is good

When I use the NEW firmware (1.9.2.7 CRx) with the same distance the connection is bad! (even when the radio power is changed to different settings)

Conclusion Asus has changed the output power but changing the radio power hasn't enough effect and maybe it is hardcored programmed into the firmware???.

Note1: Using this firmware on WL500g, the range of wireless transmission will be shortened because of the power of tx is lower.

Try running tools like NetStumbler to measure output power with old and new firmwares.
I made such experiment using NetStumbler when upgrading from 1.8.1.7-3 to 1.9.2.7-1. I had been using default settings for tx power before and still now. The measuring distance was wery low - half a meter, but I did not recognize any difference in signal strength before and after upgrade. So I did not understand what the change is.
I did not experiment with various tx power settings, but seems to me that the default is still the same:

$ wl txpwr
txpwr is 19
$ wl txpwr1
TxPower is 51 qdbm, 12.75 dbm, 19 mW Override is Off
Can anybody tell me what exactly has changed?
Just curious, 'cos I'm running with no problems.

There was a change of DEFAULT output power, ASUS firmware treats 19mW as default, and does not change output power unless you specify something different than 19mW.
I've removed this check, so output power is ALWAYS in sync with one specified in the web interface.
So, I'm suggesting to measure it with both firmwares.

Hi!

First of all I want to say thanks to Oleg, this is tremendous good work!

But I experience the same problem as Twisterchen with 1.9.2.7-3. I've entered the correct account information in the web interface but I'm not able to connect to my ISP. The log talks something about a guy called "test user" who is trying to connect instead of me. I'm from Germany, too and I think it's possible we're talking about the same ISP here (T-Online in my case).

Any help would be appreciated.

I put back CR3a, uploaded my settings, still no connection to isp.
Started a telnet session, typed "pppd file /tmp/ppp/options.wan0". The answer was "no such file or diercory" and indeed there was no such file called "options.wan0" in that dir.

My username, nor my pass. is longer than 31 chars.

So made a hard reset again, and stated to configure the wl500g from zero. /not uploading the settings/.
And it worked! Don't know why but it worked. /Strange that I used the same setting file successfully with CR2/.

Maybe the structure of the settings file was changed in CR3.

One more question: The changelog says> "Added simple samba configuration from the web". How can I reach this web interface?

Thank you for doing this for us, I really appriciate your work!

Hi,

I have upgraded from 1.8.1.7-3 to 1.9.2.7-3, thanks for all the work Oleg, but I found that the router loses its LAN host name after a number of hours.

I then have to use the direct IP address for web admin and telnet. This means that samba drive mapping stop working until I reboot the router.

I have checked the hosts file and it is still OK.

The router kept its host name with 1.8.1.7-3. but samba kept failing as already described.

Thanks

You mean it does not reconnect automatically, when you disconnect it?
According to your logs wl500g automatically connects on the startup, when it gots manual disconnect from the web interface and then manual connect. I could not see any problems here.
Hi Oleg,
attached you will find the log after 24h, the wl500g doesn't reconnect after the ISP disconnected the line. I had manually to reconnect.

I'm new at this. I've just bought a wl500G. Reception is good for only a few metres away, but transmission failes even to a PC on the next floor in my house. I've upgrade the drivers for the PCI cards...didn't help. Fiddled with the original and a new (external) antenna and it won't work! Now i'm told your latest firmware upgrade makes it possible to control and dramatically increase the signal strenght of the 500G. Is that true and if so, how do i install the firmware on my router? (I told you, i'm new at this :) ) My operating system is WinXP.

Start by reading the manuals. How to upgrade firmware is described in detail. Doesn't harm to read first and then ask

Quick howto:

go to http://my.router, logon to it as admin, and go to tab system setup, click firmware update, point to directory where you have downloaded the new firmware and click update.

Wait until your browser screen gets updated and presto.

Wondershaper works if called direktly, but how can i check if it uns with post-firewall ? It would be nice to have some direktory from the HD in the path, like a /tmp/harddisk/local/bin to make external software usage simpler and maybe define a common standart for this.
Can it be that the Samba Ports are open to the Wan Port ?? I have Port 113 Open.
To the FTP: I KNOW that the standart "anonymous" option ever used the external hd root as base, but SHOULDīNT it use /ftp_pub instead ? So that root can get complete HD access and anonymous the resreicted as usual on the inet.

"Time synchronized" message is a fake, it's actually means "I will try to synchronize time now". Yes, ppp-2.4.3 is buggy, I've "downgraded" to ppp-2.4.2 with patches and checking in right now (I will got results this evening).
As for path: for now I'm suggesting to modify /etc/profile to set PATH and save it to flashfs. This is how I've done for me. Adding this to the firmware could result in slowness when searching for executables.
And yes, we need to make some conventions on how to use external drives. I'm thinking of mounting separate partition to /opt. Placing everything to one partition is not a good idea...
Finally I'm thinking of recompiling everything using the openwrt toolchain and making possible to use openwrt packages with rootfs.

Had sames issues with ASUS firmwares too, without full access to the system log its hard to determine what was going, but hitting the renew button on the status page fixed the problem until the next DHCP renewal at which point it would renew and then stop passing traffic until the lease was renewed manually most frustratingly sometimes it would continue to work for a number of hours without manual intervention only to stop working again.

Under 1.9.2.7 CR2 i could see renew requests been issued but no reponse. I also could see occasionally a 10.xxx.xxx.xxx address for the DHCP server when the web interface says it is 83.xxx.xxx.xxx which is a similar senario to that described in another post

1.9.2.7 CR3a has been stable for 42 hours now, just logged on over ssh and all seems well

Hi,

Like I already said in this thread, I experiment difficulties with my wireless laptop and the new fw 1.9.X.X: slower or even no responds at all when trying to surf, enter ftp or even router admin page, etc.. (this never happend to me with previuos fw).

Sometimes, WinXP pops me that my wireless connectivity is insufficient and, after a while, try to get a new address from the router dhcp server.

When connection comes back as normal and when I enter the admin page, I see that there are no entries in the "Status & Log - DHCP Leases" menu.

Could it be in relation with this issue?

SSH is an advanced thing, which is requires using flashfs. So, anybody who need ssh should be able to do this from command line and I've an example on my page.

Seems, some packets are get missed by your PC, but as soon as it got an IP address - every is fine, don't think about this. If these packets are from wireless clients and they've WPA enabled, then you could try playing with wireless drivers if you don't want for messages to appear multiple times.

This file is now produced automagically with correct options, once samba is enabled in the web interface and usb drive is plugged in. You could also customize it and save to flashfs - this way web settings will not have any effect on the file content.

I had same problem with my cygwin ssh client and putty was ok. I simply erased the rsa keys for the wl500g router in the file ~/.ssh/known_hosts. After i had to create again news keys for a new connection. There is maybe a problem with rsa keys between 2 differents version of dropbear. Try to check the rsa keys for your ssh client.

Hi Oleg,

I'm face to a problem and tried to solve it on my own, but now I'm running out of ideas.

I've done firmware updates to my WL500g several times before and everything went fine, until ...yes.. until version 1.8.1.7-3. You may remember some of my entries about "smaller probs" in this forum.

1.8.1.7-3 is the first version which will not run on my router at all. Since this version no future version is running.
the last I tried to get working was 1.9.2.7-3b. Just tried everything but the result is the same everytime.

powerlamp is on, the network switch is working, WLAN lamp is off. No reaction for the web interface or telnet.

The only way back to live is to use the recovery tool of ASUS, set the router in recovery mode and use a firmware 1.8.1.7-2a or before!!!

Anybody any idea on this topic? Anybody faced to the same problem?

To avoid aditional questions:

To avoid networking problems all updates are done by a direct network cable connection to the router.

Yes I have reset the router to factory defaults before trying to do an update. I did it by web interface and also by the switch on the back side.
I proofed the reset working, my Ip address is different from the default one and after reset it was 192.168.1.1 and the admin password was also resetted.

Now started 1st try of update by using the web client: upload seems to be fine. I could recognize the rooter is resetting after upload ( power lamp swich off/on) but no reaction of the router any longer. No respond to ping or the web interface.

Next try using the recovering tool of ASUS for upload, setting the router into recovery mode. Upload the new firmware. Results are the same as by web interface.

If I will use firmware 1.7.9-5 or 1.8.1.7-2a everythings fine, router will do a reset after upload and after a short period the WLAN lamp is turning on. And the router is reachable by ping and webinterface. Using one of the firmware version starting from 1.8.1.7-3 will show the negative result again.

I invested a lot of time to find the problem, but it seems I'm totally lost now.

Any idea?

I see no reason for 1.8.1.7-2a vs 1.8.1.7-3 differences. They're mostly the same...
Have you tried asus 1.8.1.9/2.4, 1.9.27/2.8 firmwares?

No since 1.7.5.3 I only use the firmware customized by you. It is much better than the ASUS original one. To be honest. I could not see any reason for this behaviour of my router too. I have access to another one in my company, there was no problem at all to update from 1.8.1.7-2a to 1.8.1.7-3. Only my private one seems to cause this trouble.

I have no idea what's going on because the router seems to work fine without this updating problem. This entry is of course done by using it.

Thank you for your very quick reaction.

It would be very interesting to see if one of the ASUS firmware's do work. Try 1.9.2.8. Apart from the question which one is better, it could help to determine what the problem is. So try one of the ASUS firmware's mentioned in Oleg's reply.

I will try it as soon as I'm at home and will find the time to do it. Unfortunately I'm not the only guy using the router and so I have to wait until night before I can start doing my tests.

I'm no so familiar with LINUX otherwise I would have started a diff on the 2a and 3 version to find the minor changes. This will perhaps give some hints is going on.

Hi Oleg,

i guess you'll not like the result at all. Using the recovery tool and resetting to factory default, I installed the new beta version from http://files.wl500g.info/asus/wl500g/fir..._1.9.2.8_EN.zip. And result was fine. The router is running. Another test with customized firmwares mentioned in my first entry, are still showing same results as before :( So I finally returned to the 1.8.1.7-2a ( last know working version containing your enhancements) to write this entry.

So what could be the next step? Is nobody else faced to this problem?

If there are only minor changes between 1.8.1.7-2a and 1.8.1.7-3 perhaps a diff of source code can give a hint.

If you'll need another test feel free to contact me.

Could the initialisation of the WLAN interface evoke this problem? I can notice that the LAN ports are turning on and the WLAN never even not one time. Was something change on this part between 2a and 3? What's about the WAN interface I know that you improved the PPPOE interface because of redial problem, could this be the reason for router crash?

Hope you'll be successful in hunting this bug.

Why do you think so? In fact this does not hurt me at all. ;)
So, I've reviewed 2a vs 3 - still no ideas. So try to help yourself. You need to make rootfs on the usbstick or the usb drive with 1.8.1.7-2a. Once it boots fine - flash wl500g with 1.8.1.7-3 and try booting with old rootfs. If this will work, then kernel is ok and you could start replacing affected programs one by one. If you've further problems - start new thread in the Q&A forum, and I will help you. No linux box is needed at this time for you.

dunno if you tried this:

flash to 1.9.2.7 (asus firmware)
after flashing go into webconfig, reset router to default in the webinterface
turn unit off for 5 minutes
and try to flash firmware 1.9.2.7-1 (be sure to use WL500g version and not WL500gx as your WL500g will probably not boot)

Hi

Jesterday i had an unwanted reboot i think when i was away and the pppoe line was disconnected, got it online with klicking "connect".

I dont know what is the special improvement with the new ppp subsystem, but in my case it runs into more problems then it may solve...
Is this a choosable option between old and new ppp system in your firmware mod oleg ? I didnīt have looked deeper over the source tree until now.

I've already had two reboots last 40 minutes. This afternoon I have installed 1.9.2.7-3b on the WL500g. A reboot at 19:09 and 19:36. What causes this problem.

ISP is cable. USB stick plugged in. 1 wired pc, 1 wireless.
Need more info?

Edit:
Downgraded back to 1.9.2.7 (which I had before). Still the same problem.
Possible that the processor gets overheated, after using 3b?? (What's the routers behaviour when overheating?)
Something different now: What about the guerantee if you upgrade to an official firmware?

The same problem here. I tried all the Oleg's custom fws for 500gx, none works in client mode.

If switched to client mode ("station" on the web interface), the device doesn't respond to pings, or any other network connections on eth0, didn't try eth1 or eth2 though. Also, it reboots over and over every half a minute or so.

I can't verify that at this moment, but the device was always reset after firmware upgrade, thus I assume, the wireless was set to OPEN.

Hi,

I'm using two computers linked through a WL500g (with firmware 1.9.2.7-3a, but as far as I can tell it's irrelevant). Both use wired connection and both boot either Linux or WindowsXP. When I use Windows sometimes the DNS seems to disappear. I can still connect from (obviously using IP numbers instead of fully qualified domain names) and to the corresponding computer (I have a Cygwin sshd running). I've not observerd the same problem with any of my computers using Linux. I've also observed that if I change the DNS "Use 192.168.1.1 as preferred DNS", then "Use DHCP provided DNS", Windows goes back to normal. There is probably a bug in the TCP/IP stack of Windows (who would have believed it ?) but the behaviour is strange: it does not occur if I connect directly to my provider (using DHCP as well) but only through the router and only with Windows. Does anybody have any idea ?
