New firmware, which contains several fixes are available for download (http://wl500g.dyndns.org/1.9.2.7-2/).
The exact changes are:

WPA2 & WME enabled, but WPA is not fully functional as seems
Fixed WL-500gx USB 1.1 devices support
Fixed ASUS firmware firewall problems (PPTP passthrough should work now)
Fixed wshaper problems (was not functional in the 1.9.2.7-1)
Added WL-500gx rootfs support

Yes, I've noticed the same problem with ftp on 1.9.2.7 CR1. I get the directory and file listing, but when I try to download the file, I get the file, but the resulting downloaded size is 0kb. The USB hard disk is 40gb with NTFS :( , and maybe that is causing the problem.

How you're accessing ftp - anonymously or using create account. If you've created account, then please write down Rights, which you've assigned to user.
Also, does upload works for you?

Tried download - works fine for anonymous, but I do not have ntfs here. You may probably need to try with fat.

Just updated my WL300g with the new v.1.9.2.7 CR2 firmware and, as I use RADIUS authentication, I could no longer access the wireless network, but via ethernet I can access the AP, configure it via web and access it via telnet or ssh. The RADIUS server is not even contacted by the AP with this firmware. Nevertheless, the v.1.9.2.7 CR1 firmware works like a charm! Maybe I'm putting this message in the wrong forum, but as the WL300g forum is kinda empty and as Oleg offers also custom firmware for this AP, I decided to post this here.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, this is expected. Looks like I'm was right - radius does not work with ASUS 1.9.2.7, thank you for your report. I will disable WPA2 back as it was in the 1.9.2.7-1.

People, I've been having a problem not reported here yet, as far as I've read.
I've configured static ip's in the lan network and the lease time is set to 24h. Each 24h the computers in the lan lose their ip address and internet connection and get up again a few seconds later, but just long enough to drop alot of things from online availability.
Previously I used firmware version 1.8.1.3, but since I started testing/using firmware version 1.9.2.7-1 and now firmware version 1.9.2.7-2, this problem started to happen.

Thx in advance for any answer. :)

The error code returned by windows in the events logging:

The IP address lease 192.168.1.2 for the Network Card with network
address xxxxxxxxxxx has been denied by the DHCP server 0.0.0.0
(The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

Do you've anything in the wl-500g logs? Most likely you've some other dhcp server on you network.

I'll try to get the logs tomorrow, but I'm almost sure I have no other dhcpd in the network, and this problem just started to happen after using this firmware, never happened in 1.8.1.3, the one I used before this version.

Hi all,

First of all, I'd like to thank Oleg and others for their great work on the WL-500g.
Here is the strange thing I have detected : since I upload and use the firmware 1.9.2.7 CR2 [Oleg], I can observe this thing in the system log :
"Dec 30 06:16:41 kernel: lp_wait_ready timeout
Dec 30 06:16:41 kernel: lp_write timeout
Dec 30 06:16:46 kernel: lp_wait_ready timeout
Dec 30 06:16:46 kernel: lp_write timeout"
etc ...
A real flood from the LPR daemon when my printer is switch off.
And when I switch on my printer (Deskjet 920C), it prints, sometimes, without any request, this kind of information :
"PARPORT: DESKJET 920C"
Of course, In one hand, I don't want my printer to print thing alone ; And in the other hand, I want to switch off my printer when I don't use it.
Thank you for your support.

Dec 30 06:16:41 kernel: lp_wait_ready timeout
Dec 30 06:16:41 kernel: lp_write timeout

I had these messages in my syslog when I killed the lpr process using telnet. I happened to have a printer plugged into the parallel port that was off, and one plugged in the USB port that was on.

I am having problems with a dropped connection w/ the new firmware, although I have a suspicion it is more from my broadband provider than from the router. I'll keep you posted on how setting to a fixed speed in the web admin tool works.

Hi all,

I have exactly the same problem as "int"

my wl500-g resets completely after about half an hour of surfing the internet.
If i use web-radio it dies after 5 minutes....
The router just has a complete reset and starts all over again.

I use a "casema/wanadoo" pppoe cable account and i've tried firmware 1.9.2.7. and 1.9.2.7.CR2.

With previous firmwares i have never had this problem........
Any advice???

I have a suspicion that using a USB printer may cause some of the reset behavior. I am not sure if this is the case, but I am posting to see if others with this problem are using RAW printing and/or with a USB connection.

I just bought a Epsopn RX500 and have it hooked up to my WL-500g via USB, and I am getting router resets about every 1/2 hour when surfing. I have one laptop on 802.11b, a desktop hardwired, and a VoIP device. I have tried custom firmwares 1.9.2.7-1, 1.9.2.7-2, and 1.8.1.7-3, and have had similar results.

I have unplugged the usb printer, and things seem to be a bit more stable. I don't believe I have had a reboot since.

I also have some other wierd behavior concerning the router: if I use the et command to manually set the WAN speed to anything other than auto, my modem will not recognize a connection and will continuously reboot itself. Once I set it to auto (using et), the modem will pick up a signal in about a second, and will establish a connection.

However, upon a reboot, I have to reapply the "et -i eth1 speed auto" command to get the modem to recognize the router.

I am planning to go to my cable company to pick up a new modem tomorrow, as these problems may be caused by the modem and not the router.

Well, looks like a power/grounding problems. This could lead to reboots and hangs.

I have done the following, and I have been running without a reboot for a day now.

1) Downgraded back to 1.8.1.7-3
2) Plugged back in my USB printer, but removed my parallel printer that was plugged into the WL-500G but was unplugged from power

Could it have been the parallel printer--a Brother 3100C multifunction--that was causing all the problem? Because of the configuration of my setup, I didn't have a power cord long enough to reach an outlet, so I just left it set up without power.

I just bought an extension cord, and have it powered and plugged into the WL-500g along with the USB printer, and at least for the last 5 minutes everthing is working fine. I can even print to both printers at the same time without a problem.

I think I am going to stick with 1.8.1.7-3 for now. I would really like the bandwidth management features of 1.9.2.x, but it really isn't set up properly for me. I need to be able to configure upstream by IP address, not by port, as VoIP claims to use up to 10000 ports (yikes!--At least the configuration indicates that ports 10000-20000 should be forwarded to the device).

Hi @ll
Thank you for your support.
Well I don't have any USB printer, only a parallel one, with the 1.9.2.7-2 Firmware.
Someone told me about using RAW printing instead : I will try this but I think it it is not the solution. Why ? Because of these messages "lp_wait_ready timeout" and "p_write timeout" I also have when all my computers (LAN) and my printer are powered down. So normally, no requests are sent by any of my computers (LAN).
Perhaps I should "Remove" the printer from the router and plug it a new time : I haven't "Remove" it during the firmware upgrade ...
Gonna try all these stuffs and tell you what are the results.
See you ;)

Oleg

Problems with "PARPORT: bla-bla-bla" is solved, as well as lp timeouts caused by that. This will appear in the 1.9.2.7-3.

As for incomplete pages in the browser - either you've buggy firewall installed on your PC, or have general problems.

What do you mean, saying "restart"? Router reboots and you've checked this looking for uptime? Or you loose wireless connectivity?

No because the page(attach) are not in html, are in asp language, and the WL not resolve asp to html.. and show the code(asp).

This is not an asp, but javascript, which is intended to run by browser.

After changing the ip_conntrack_max to 4096 it works for a few minuts to half an hour, after that it has been resett to 1024. This happens if i put it in the post-boot script or if i do it manually.

Just to update:

The router has not crashed/locked up/ or lost the WAN connection since yesterday. It seems that one of the problems is solved, although I don't know if it is because I went back to 1.8.1.7-3 or if it is truly a problem with a printer that is unpowered but attached to the WL-500g.

Also, I still cannot get a WAN connection when using the et command except if I it set it to auto. Here's the syntax I use

et -i eth1 speed XXX

where XXX = auto, 100full, 10full, 100half, or 10half. I have tried all speeds and firmwares 1.8.1.7-3, 1.9.2.7-1, and 1.9.2.7-2. My cable modem is a Toshiba PCX2500--perhaps it's some conflict with the modem?

Wait for 1.9.2.7-3 or use search. Answered question yesterday. Hint: change user name to root.

Or change root to admin in smb.conf

thanks you all for replay, i got it working and you guys were right.
But my problem was that i changed in system setup the name "admin" for security reason, so in /etc/smb.conf force user = admin was not working and most likely also root for the same reason. It only worked with my login name.

My WL500G is used in access point behind a router (another ASUS).
Port forwarding is configure on the router to forward service FTP (port 21) and webcam (port 7776)
The problem is that FTP and webcam server don't work from wan access.
(It works in lan access).
The problem is the same when the router is a netgear or asus router.

Could you find a solution to my problem ?
Thank you
Alexis

Hi,

i have this problem with 1.9.2.7CR-2 using in client mode.
While I'm copuing files from my VPN (i'm also connected to VPN server), my Asus goes down after while.
if I'm not connected to VPN everything is OK.

in fw 1.7.9.5-5 i havent this problem.
What could i tried to fix?

Aren't you running on WinXP SP1? Is the connection lost in few minutes even if there's no data traffic? I suppose that "goes down" does not mean reboot nor hang.
If that's the case, try to stop the Windows Management Instrumentation service before your VPN access attempt. SP2 update could also help.

Try to search the forum and double check your configuration. Try to configure the router from scratch (apply reset to defaults first).
In case you can't fix the problem still, specify your firmware version and more config related details.

OK so you loose the wireless connectivity completely. What you do to make it working again? Do you have to reboot the router or do you just initialize the interface somehow?
What's the free memory status?

could you supply a testaccount or something to test so I can confirm the possible 'bug' ?

That's strange. I've been using VPN as well, and without any problems. Even with transferring large files, my vpn connection stayed up throughout the whole day, and so did my Asus.

I use it to work from home, so I "hook up" my laptop wireless and work the whole day.

I've been running olegs 1.9.2.7-2 . I've just fired up a vpn connection to the office, and my average doesn't go up.
It runs rock solid over here.

Addiotinal load was probably caused by debug messages produced by pptp kernel modules - try 1.9.2.7-3.

I have found, that 1.9.2.7 firmware is is using command tc for bandwidth management and is distinct from wshaper added by Oleg.
Is someone using that?
Should I use tc or wshaper approach?
Can anyone suggest me which is better?

Also I have discovered that limits labeled as kbps (kilobits) in GUI are kBps (kilobytes) in fact (tc reports numbers eight times higher than entered!)
So, it looks like QoS doesn't work, but if you divide limits by eight, it works fine - maybe Oleg can fix that in custom FW.

Hi Oleg,

couldy you answer me to this questions please:

in 1.9.2.7-3
- is it possible to make wireless bridge in client mode (the same network at eth2 & eth0)
- where is watchdog configuration? how can i change it? what is in it's config by default?
- is it possible to enable afterburner with this fw?, does afterburner works in WDS mode too?
- what about WPA? does it works in WDS?

i cannot test this thing at this time, by i need them.
Could you, or somebody test this and give me answers?
thanks a lot for all.

btw. THX for very nice and helpful firmwares Oleg. I'll send you some donations when i earn some money. For this time i'm 'moneyless' :(

It's better to post this in the 1.9.2.7-3 thread.

- is it possible to make wireless bridge in client mode (the same network at eth2 & eth0)

Yes, switch to AP mode, which should do the trick.

- where is watchdog configuration? how can i change it? what is in it's config by default?

what do you need exactly?

- is it possible to enable afterburner with this fw?,

Sure.

does afterburner works in WDS mode too?

have no idea. I do not have afterburner capable devices.

- what about WPA? does it works in WDS?

it does not work with 1.9.2.7.

There is no need to donate answers, the only donation Antiloop asked about was forum support, i.e. forum license and hosting. We're helping for free. :)

I've been using 1.9.2.7-1 and everything was fine. Obviously, I disobeyed the rule.."don't touch it if it works" and I upgraded to 1.9.2.7-3. And it happened that I couldn't ping wireless clients and WDS clients anymore. Same happened when I downgraded to 1.9.2.7-2. When I downgraded to 1.9.2.7-1 again, it started working. All this was without hard reseting the router. BTW, in the Status&Log->Wireless section of the web interface, I could see the wireless client MAC address and it said .. associated.

Good finding, hopefully I've fixed it now.

Hi,

today i had the second time an crash of the pppoed. After a restart everything works fine. will this problem fixed i the next cr release?

Bye Enno

My FW is 1.9.2.7 CR3
bungee, this is not CR3 topic. also, there is already 1.9.2.7-3a available for download, which fixes most of the problems. If you still has problems, post your syslog to the correct thread.
