Hello,
I just ordered a WL-500gP and am considering using Olegs firmware. However, I don't know what Olegs firmware can do that ASUS' does not.

Does Olges firmware have any real benefits beside being 'selfmade'? What is so special about it?
I plan to use the router with 26 MBits broadband and I'm going to use a VoIP-phone as well as a 8GB USB-Stick to back up some data.

Also, is Olegs firmware completely new or is it a modified and updated ASUS firmware?

with original FW you can use your Asus simply as router/wifi AP nothing special.

any fancy feature isn't working..

I personally had dissapointment after I recived my Asus and realised that all these features written on package aren't working ;)

So what benefits does Olegs firmware exactly have compared to the original? I'm a newbee so I would only install the firmware without extra packages. Or do the extra features only come by installing extra packages on top of Olegs firmware?

Loads of extra packages you can install.

Have a look here:

http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/oleg/cross/stable/

and open the file 'packages.gz'

If sometime in the future you discover that the standard packages do not work as expected, then update to 'oleg' firmware and find a working alternative.

It is not possible to install new packages with the standard asus firmware.

Thanks,
I still have two questions:

1) EDIT: removed

2) Can I use an USB-stick as a local HDD as simple as I can with the ASUS firmware? I just put it into the USB-port and a network-HDD appeared within the Windows Explorer:

Thanks so far!

The 'oleg' firmware is not so 'plug and pray' as the original
asus firmware. keep this in mind.

If you don't fancy to learn some basic linux commands, you better stick with the original firmware.

If you want learn some more, you can start here:

I'll stick with the ASUS firmware for now.
