Hi, I installed the new 1.0.7.8 firmware and I have started to browse the dirs and files... I found a ipkg directory in /opt which acts really strange. I have no rigts to access it, if I change the rights It changes back again to root. Tried to do a rm -r but I do not have rights to do this. WHAT is this and why is it protected in this way?? I know that if a package installation goes bad and the temporary download is'nt removed it looks like this, but I havn't installed anything yet and did a clean installation of the 1.0.7.8 on a new hard drive.

[dude@ASUS opt]$ ls -al

drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2856 Jan 1 1970 bin
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 36 Jan 1 1970 doc
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 292 Jan 1 1970 etc
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 104 Jan 1 1970 include
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 80 Feb 6 17:30 info
drwx------ 1 root root 0 Feb 6 17:30 ipkg-5dqxK3
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2372 Jan 1 1970 lib
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 20 Jan 1 1970 libexec
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 64 Feb 6 17:30 man
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 544 Feb 6 17:06 sbin
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 56 Jan 1 1970 share

Hi, you did install KC Furge's version of 1.0.7.8, right? I wouldn't call that 'the new 1.0.7.8. firmware', that I consider coming from Asus. It leads to misunderstanding and confusion.
Now your question. Mr Furge did not install very much in /opt, but at least he installed dropbear for our joy. I think this 5dqxK3 must have something to do with that.
Furthermore, without copying /opt to /shares/MYVOLUME1/opt you will be left with a read-only, not-writable directory /opt.

BTW I have installed many packages and see many /opt/ipkg* directories that I never have examined. Do you really know that these are leftovers? That is new for me.

Marc got most of what I would have said.

It is likely that at least one of the optware packages I installed while making the image might have bailed with an error. I just confirmed that it's in my 1.0.7.8 distribution. Nothing subversive or magic. I'll clean it up.

You won't be able to change anything about this directory until you relocate /opt to the HDD as described here:
