IPk Tutorial Issues

Hi,
I followed the turotial on how to install the Ipk package. When I did I could not get Somba or the stupid FTP to work any more. Could someone explain why?

Isn't one of the first steps to installing custom firmware and ipkg switching of FTP and Samba trough the web-page?
If you want to use FTP or any other tool, install them using the IPKG install command.
