Hello,

I would like to buy a router WL-500G, and I have a Printer Canon i865, and I would like to know if this router will work with it. Anybody has done the test ?

Also is it possible to connect two printer to the router (i've got a cannon i865 an a BJC-4100) one on the usb port and th other on the //.

Last but not least, I've an ethernet alcatel speed touch home ADSL modem. Is anybody is using such modem with this router, is it working ?

Do I have something to know about the configuration of the router or the modem to make it work.

Thank to reply to a newB

As for the printer:
http://uk.asus.com/products/communication/wireless/printer-support.htm
That's the list of compatible printers from asus. You should also check out >Reported Compatible Hardware< in this forum.

I thing using two printers one on USB and one on LPT will not work... i think i have been reading some place that the USB port will overrun the LPT but i don't now if this is correct

Then about the modem.... many have reported that they can only use the WAN port for a short while before it "dies". I also had this problem, this is solved by using the customized firmware. (i don't know if you can fix it without) and forcing the WAN port to be 10 or 100 Mbit. (You might be able to set your modem to be 10 or 100 Mbit or do as other have done placing a 10 Mbit hub between the modem and router)

I hope this will help some and perhaps someone else has something more to add or correct :)

at this moment the firmware avaible is not capable of doing this, in theory it IS POSSIBLE

it's just a matter of changing some scripts i think, but it still has to be done..

What do you really think about the Asus WL-500G router.

I'm in my way to buy a router, and it seems to me that it is a good choice. But looking to this forum scaring me a little bit since I don't want to use other firmware that the officiel one.

I know that I only see people that have problems, and that people happy never say so in the forum, but, the problem like the 10/100mbs prob that sone user have (I've an alcatel speed touch hone ethernet modem) is strange. I really expect that a router should at least work on that part since it is made basicaly for that.

More than that i've a cannon i865 printer, and it seems that cannon does not offer linux driver, so I guess it won't works with the asus.

Should I consider other more "strong" router like linksys, d-link or netgear?

Thanks for reply

I also use the Alcatel SpeedTouch Home (Ethernet ADSL Modem) with an italian (Telecom Alice) ADSL-line.

I'm interested in buying the WL-500b to use it with my Asus M6800N Notebook, Desktop PC and HP G85 Printer.

But first I like to clear the problems of the WAN (WL-500b) to WAN (SpeedTouch Home) connection. I have heard different reasons: users of other routers post that the signal is to weak and a good/special net-cable or a switch between can solve it.

Here and in this tread http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?threadid=54&highlight=adsl+modem it sounds more like the auto-switching of both devices is responsable?

Can everybody clear this more or what is more important to me: it is possible (with the newest WL-500b-Firmware and maybe setted to 10Mbit) to connect without problems?

Current official firmware is buggy.

I'm using Dlink DWL-500g ADSL modem with no problems.

Driver is not required for Linux if you use LPR raw queue (this is how WL-500G works), but Windows driver is required to be able to work with LPR printer.

I use a speedtouch modem behind the Wl-500g. The router works fine with it during about one week, then hangs.

Since the upgrade with the firmwares provided by Oleg (thanks again Oleg) it is really stable.

Excuse the newB question: but where can I find this firmware and infos about it (maybe whats different to the official firmware)

In the Customized FirmwareTalk http://wl500g.info/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=25 I found many threads and links from Oleg; maybe the latest http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?s=&threadid=175 ?

Is the customized firmware update simple like for the official versions?

This forum looks like a heaven for firmware freaks :D, sadly I'm not a coder and not a "telnet/linux/etc" knower, but here some things and functions and especially problem solutions sounds very interesting and good. It is strange that the best forums even for "GPL-Software-using-Hardware" are never on the manufacturer sites... ;)

in this forum you can find the official released firmwares non officials are named as CUSTOMIZED (as the name says) http://wl500g.info/forumdisplay.php?forumid=11

forums are mostly hard to maintain, you also need tech support from your own company and time to support the forum(which costs money..) and i think i've said enough now :) but Asus is putting since a few monts (since the beginning of this year i believe) money in their technical support so they increase the support.. (i've been at Asus Holland)
