Bekijk de volledige versie : What HD?
I am finally planning to expand storage capacity of my router.
USB HD comes as a 1 alternative.
As it will be always on I am worry about noise and specially heating?
What should I consider? Can someone recommend a good product answering requierements above?

I am using a fujitsu MHW2080AT 2.5" disk in an usb external
casing. You have to put your ear on it to hear it.
2.5 inch disk are a bit more expensive and have lower capacity, but are often more quiet...
If noise is your biggest concern go for a laptop disk with low rotational speed like the one above (4200rpm)
Due to the low speed the casing gets only slightly warm...
Thanks Avberk!
I just thought about 2.5" disks. I do not need performance but availability wo noise and heat.
Is it realy worth to buy a box with integrated HD vs. build it self?
Have you built you self the yours?
Just additional question, often this kind of disks does not need external power.
But Asus I believe supply only 0.5 A power, is it enough?
How doest it work in your case?

Hi,
boxes for the 2.5' hdd are commonly available at computerstores.
It has alle the connections built in..
just open it up, pop-in the hdd, connect it.. close the box and connect to the asus using the usb cable.

(these are available for IDE and SATA drives)
About power.
I have 2 external 2.5' hdd.
One works on the asus, one doesn't without supplementary power supply.
(I now use a 500gb external WD 3.5' with power supply, almost no noise)
About speed.
even the slowest 2.5' hdd yet available is way faster than the speed the usb-interface supports so there's no real degrading in performance there.. Maybe in access-times, but not in transfer/throughput-speed.
Hope this helps
Hi,
I'm using a WD mybook (g.e. http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=324).
The colling iks ok, you only hear the HD if you're accessing the drive (but thats with all HD's.
Thanks everybody!
I think I decided for a 2.5" now, either integrated or build your self.
But before I need to learn how to menage BT downloads. Right now it does not work using my home built HD with EXT2 partition.
I have read some treads here wo understood how to solve the "The page cannot be displayed" issue using Asus DM.
Anyeay I think with some luck I will come to the end of this.

I also am thinking of getting a dedicated external 2.5" disk for my router. WD Passport2 (WDXMS1200) 120GB is my current top choice. Is there any limit in particular as to the disk size/type/rpm/etc. that can be connected to WL-500gP?
Namely, the 2.5" disks use the power they get from the USB port, while the classical external desktop disks are powered on their own...
