http://www.ovislink.com.tw/9000intro.htm

It seems to be a good product on the paper.

Is there anyone here who have experienced this product ?

It has a lot of software fonctions implemented (print server, ftp, firewall, vpn, qos ...) but it is much more expensive than a wl-500g.

Do you think the wl-500gx will be much more expensive than the wl-500g ?

On paper a nice product:
•Processor: MIPS 170MHz Brecis 2006 CPU :D
•Memory: 8MB Flash, 32MB SDRAM :D :D
•4 * USB 2.0 ports :D

But: Brecis 2006 CPU and Intersil 3880IK wireless chipset which makes it completely different from WL-500g (broadcom) :(

And probably much more expensive (I guess EUR 200,--) then WL-500g (EUR 90,--) or WL-500gx (I guess EUR 130,--).

Hi,
we have recently bought this unit at my work, along with the Asus WL-160g client (unfortunately- no Linux driver, Envara=now part of Intel wifi chip).
Since I am new to the WiFi world and have so many other things to do I have no real experience with it. (However, I would like to change this situation very soon - with the help of this great forum.) :)
So far I have managed to find out the following information about the router.
It is actually the Fiberlogic (http://www.fiberlogic.com) Matrix 21 GUV in disguise (see http://www.matrixnetworld.com. Note that Fiberlogic produces three more versions that Ovislink doesn't resell in its own nice blue box. ;) And the OUI database entry points to Fi WIn, Inc.
The WMU sports "Linux version 2.4.20-br20 (wschen@wschen.fiberlogic.com) (gcc version 3.2 20030604 (BRECIS uClinux)) #509 Thu Aug 26 20:22:02 CST 2004" (string copied from the newest firmware :) ) (Not true anymore - 43w is out.)
The source code (seems incomplete to me) can be found here (http://www.ovislinkcorp.com/9000GPL.alz). The compression format I have never heard about before is said to be popular in South Korea and can be unpacked by ALZip (http://www.altools.net/). The archive contains the following files:
busybox-1.00-pre10.tar.bz2 1074 KB 30.4.2004 02:43:00 AM
dnsmasq-2.7.tar.gz 97 KB 30.4.2004 02:43:00 AM
iptables-1.2.9.tar.bz2 182 KB 30.4.2004 02:43:00 AM
linux-2.4.20.tar.bz2 26778 KB 30.4.2004 02:43:00 AM
ppp-2.4.2b3.tar.gz 762 KB 30.4.2004 02:44:00 AM
zebra-0.94.tar.gz 1288 KB 30.4.2004 02:44:00 AM
The router also runs for example Boa and Pure-FTPd. I guess the provided source code wouldn't make Mr.Harald Welte (http://gnumonks.org/users/laforge), the founder of http://www.gpl-violations.org/about.html and creator of reveng-tools (http://svn.gnumonks.org/trunk/reveng-tools/) very happy. Not to mention the firmware modders. :D So far I haven't found any traces of uClinux patches in the source. Neither has Google googled-out any sourcecode of the Brecis (http://www.brecis.com) uClinux (http://www.uclinux.org).

As for the features - you can find the pros and cons on many reviews on the web, for example here (http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Reviews-158-ProdID-MU9000VPN.php) and here (http://barbara.no/art.php?artikkelid=9095). What I don't like about it is the dismal fact that it doesn't have such a great community as can be found here on chupa.nl and that the bandwidth control applies to upstream only. The four USB 2.0 ports and PS/2 power for an external HDD are great. It's also nice that Ovislink guys (or whoever ;) ) update the firmware about once a month. Wish it was true for other manufacturers, too. :(
One of the few WMU-9000VPN forums I know of is on 21byte.de (http://ovislink-forum.21byte.de/). Unfortunately I don't speak German, so no enlightenment for me there. Another one is here (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,11042055~mode=flat).
Ovislink WMU-9000VPN sells for about 150 Euros including 19% VAT here in Czech Republic. Asus WL-500g used to cost the same only a few months ago. I have seen the WL-500gx at the Czech IT Expo Invex (http://www.invex.cz) at the booth of Joyce (http://www.joyce.cz). Their sales rep. told me they were going to sell it in November. He spoke about doubled RAM etc. but the comparison table of Asus WiFi products was informationally ungenerous. At least I noticed the existence of WL-530g I was previously unaware of. Not that it matters.

Regards

Josef

:D Hope someone take care of this. ;-)

Well, wl500gx info looks promising. Have you asked about pricing?

This thing really looks promicing but also has a lot of rough edges still. Some 'Oleg person(s)' could make it into a jewel indeed, apart from the lack of processing power. This is something which is not easilly overcome. It has a good FTP server though (much better then currently on the WL-500g), but no Samba.

Price is supposed to be high...

Just browsed a bit through that german forum. There's nothing much apart from some wishlists and a 'bit disturbing' announcement that Samba will not be implemented by OvisLink.

Noone is yet hacking around the firmware of that box, so no custom firmwares for a long time to come I guess...

Better stick with Asus WL-500g and gx. :D
