Bekijk de volledige versie : What would you add to a 1.0.7.8 firmware image
Due to the underwhelming enhancements to the latest firmware by Asus, I'm considering adding some more "out of the box", web gui enabled, features to future custom 1.0.7.8 firmware images.
Please post your wish-list items. Be as specific as possible with what you'd like to see. The more information I have, the more likely it will be to be included. Relevant links to forum threads, web sites, examples, how-to's, etc. will be appreciated.
I have two items already.
1) Better BT support. I like this approach:
http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=10041
2) Configurable HDD spin down
I'm sure there'll be much, much more.
- K.C.
First off, i would like to say that this is a great initiative! And thanks for all the work that you have already done
with Asus bug filled software!
Now i don't know if this is possible, but i guess it doesn't hurt to ask. I was really hoping that Asus
would have updated samba to a newer version, that supports Windows Vista. I have tried many of the "hacks"
that should make it possible for Vista to commmunicate with the old samba version, with user based auth.
My fix for now is to just use share based auth.
Is it in any way possible to replace the samba version in the firmware with a newer one, without screwing the
webGUI up?
I guess you already though of these, since its already in your tutorial on how to install your custom
firmware and "make a better system" :-). I know that these things don't have anything to do with the webGUI
but i think it would be nice to have enabled and configured "out-of-the-box".
* Bash shell
* Dropbear SSH (As described in your tutorial on installing your custom firmware)
* Apply your CPU "eating" patch :-)
It should be said that i have no experience with anything like this, so i have no idea if my suggestions are completely out of proportions :-)

Lighttpd php & Mysql would also be nice to have :)
maybe it can be made somehow so users can turn it on or off in the web-if,
like in the custom oleg firmware on the wl500-series
(I'm also trying to create a custom firmware based on you're instructions, somehow I get a buch of errors compiling it so I got a lot to learn I gues)

I agree with the urgent need for the new SAMBA version. More and more users of the WL700G will be confronted with Windows Vista on new computers. It's a shame this product is not yet updated by ASUS. The WL700G is still being marketed and sold as a state of the art product. In that case you simply have to be Vista compliant !
Next to this it would be very nice to have the possibility of spinning down the HDD.
It would be nice to have a executable that does the job (upgrading firmware and install stuff). So there wont be long discussions on "how to" from linux-unexperienced users like me. I will suggest we do a donation to kfurge when all of our wl's are running like crazy.

For a long while I used your custom firmware, but I kept having trouble configuring it the way I wanted. The Asus component kept wanting to try to take over, and it wouldn't allow some functions to be configured how one would like.
So here is a wishlist:
1. User-configurable dnsmasq for both dns function and for dhcp server. IP of local machines configurable given their mac address.
2. HDD spindown.
3. Better "Download Master" ... the mldonkey approach looks very good.
4. User-editable firewall rules.
5. Up-to-date samba
6. mail server - xmail or some combination of sendmail/fetchmail/postfix
7. webmin interface bound to local lan would be very nice
8. Installable optware ipkg support built in
9. CUPS print server
10. Full openssh server (otherwise dropbear would do)
11. termcap with console utilities: screen mc nano etc would be good
12. wpa security option for wireless as well as wep
13. A light web server. Lighttpd or php-thttpd, or perhaps appweb or cherokee.
If required, then support for a swapfile would be good.
I don't want much, hey!

You can use the Firmware restoration tool if you don't want (or can't) to use the webinterface for reflashing the firmware :-)
K.C -->
I got a servage account which i just use to host some small sites i have made for some people, and my own projects. So there is alot of free space, and lots of "unused" trafic :-). So if you are interrested i can hook you up with FTP access, so you can host firmware files etc., and i could also set up a wiki :-)
The flashing is not the problem, its the the programs to install. It would be nice if we dont have to use al these linux commands. Specially for non linx users.
I dont want to hurry you, Kfurge. But how is your planning on the new firmware you are gonna modificate. Is it years, months, weeks, days, hours minutes .....................now?!!!
Cant wait!
Woffels
Hi kfurge and thanks for doing this!
I have a few suggestions and I like to have:
- knockd to secure external access (remove all bruteforce attacks)
- dropbear
- HDD Spindown
- possibility to mount iso-files easy for streaming purposes
- ipkg
- possibility to choose and/or create/rename places for files not only /shares/MYVOLUME1/MYSHARE1
- possibility to set internal system time to local time
- a better (working) bittorrent client and downloader
- cron
- syslog-ng
Well, I know its hard to please all, but I'm looking forward to see what will be implemented in next version.

My Favorites are:
- tun/tap module and openvpn
- newer mt-daapd with a writable configfile and playlistfile
- cups
- perhaps appletalk support in networking (and netatalk, but that could be installed by ipkg)
out of this world would by python and support for hellanzb, but these are also installable by ipkg

Sweet, didn't know about that one! :-)
My mt-daapd now struggles with directories and filenames with extended characters. They are converted to some sort of ascii. So, if you have: Schönberg, Verklärte Nacht, it is sent from mt-daapd as Schotegberg, Verklwert Nacht (or so). Result: no sound. So I guess it would be nice if the Asus could work internally with UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1

I've already posted some things up there (as I'm sure you've seen). Once I get started, I think your site would be the best place to officially house the project.

I'll probably be some number of months. My outdoor lifestyle doesn't leave much spare time during the summer and fall. However, the snow flies early where I live, so I'll be able to put much more effort into the project once winter sets in.
Upgrading the existing components should be relatively straightforward so that's where I'll concentrate first. After that, I'll probably work on making a better default command-line experience. Finally I'll work on adding more applications and features once an infrastructure is put in place.
If all goes well, I expect to be half done before the end of '07. Mostly complete before spring '08.

This won't be possible. Linux is still Linux. If you need something not already in the firmware, you'll have to get your hands dirty. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to learn how to use ipkg.

Here's a list of 'wants.' Granted I've got most of these already running on 1.0.4.6 but having them from the get-go in 1.0.7.8 would be nice.
Fail2ban for disabling bruteforce attacks
Wondershaper or equivalent QoS shaper (a functional GUI would be nice too)
Better 'functional' media server like ushare (or mediatomb)
built-in configs for multihoming dydns and web sites
Better mt-daapd
Python, Perl, PHP and MYSQL preinstalled and ready to run if activated.
Kfurge you bastard:p
Your giving me a reason to keep the white brick;)
Please consider us noobs in the process.
I just want a better BT client that's all.
Thanks
Guru
Maybe it is possible to let more different webcams working.
Please consider us noobs in the process.
I've been following this forum for some time now. Your requests have been echoed before, over and over. Everything proposed in this thread would be out-of-the-box software. All you'll have to do is flash it.
Now that some good solutions have surfaced over the last year, we, as a wl700g community, are in a better position to make some things more accessible and "standard" with a SW upgrade only.
- K.C.
Ok, I've been taking notes and here's what I have so far (in my order of priority):
Top priority:
All of my patches applied (cpu load, entropy, etc.)
HDD spin down (fixed first, then configurable)
Workable command line environment (bash, ipkg, termcap, tz, busybox, default profiles, etc.)
Dropbear
CUPS to replace printd
Updated mt-daapd
Latest Samba
Web server (lighttpd)
Separate web interface for enhancements
Replacement BT client (MLDonkey)
Cron
Good idea:
User editable FW rules
Editable configuration of dnsmasq
knockd
ISO mounting
fail2ban
wondershaper
Not general enough (must add via ipkg):
Mail server
Syslog-ng
python, perl, php, mysql
hellanzb/nget
Don't know how to do / can't test:
WPA security
appletalk/netatalk
Very difficult:
Changing default from /shares/MYVOLUME1/MSHARE1
Already there:
Swapfile (512Meg)
Fixed IP for a given MAC
If you don't like how I've classified a request and would like it to be reconsidered, please post a compelling argument. Maybe others will chime in and support you.

Mr Furge, looking at your long list...
- updated mt-daapd
Even the current version (1634) does not solve the problem with accented characters. So I wonder which updated version you will pick. But it is still a long time till next spring, so I hope that mt-daapd will have some sort of final new release in the process.
- WPA security
Did I miss something? What is wrong or lacking in the current Wifi security? I have enabled WPA-PSK for all my clients.

It'll be whatever's most recent, unless you have a better suggestion or replacement application. For whatever reason, Asus does not build mt-daapd from source. Instead, it's distributed in binary form. Getting it building into the project will be a little tricky, but should not be too bad.

No. It was just on someone's list. It should have been classified as "Already there".

KFurge:
Would it perhaps be a viable option to put your work-in-progress up on some svn server (or cvs or whatever) so that others can have a look and perhaps pitch in? It does seem like a pretty big project you're taking on all by yourself.
I am a computer science graduate but don't have much specific experience doing integrating/patching work in the linux environment. Still, I'm a quick study and I consider this area a big hole in my resume, so I might be able to contribute within the time frame you sketched out above.

Ok. I'm willing to help if I can. It will mean to compile mt-daapd with all options or best choices. I have seen that somewhere.
But I like to wait for the next version. It is rather odd that after the official release of 2.4, there was no newer one for more than a year. :(
Marc

I'd actually like to do this. I currently have 1.0.4.6 completely checked into a Perforce depot. Personally, I get very uncomfortable making significant modifications to any project without some sort of version control.
However, wrangling the Asus distribution into a form workable for checking into version control (i.e. read-only when not open for edit) turned out to be a very large task. I probably won't do that again. It's not worth the trouble. An easier route may be to "overlay" version controlled copies of any modified files over the top of an official Asus distribution.
Currently, I'm still playing around with different approaches to the problem. Like my previous work, I still don't want to deviate too much from Asus's releases. The further I deviate, the harder it is to incorporate those changes into future Asus releases. My preferred path is to add a substantial collection of optware packages to the standard build flashable image. A bolt-on web based user interface will also be enabled by default. Doing this should significantly increase the usability of the box without too many modifications to the Asus distribution.
Keep tuned to the forum. I don't want to do this alone.

Hi K.C.
Is your custom firmware available yet? Just installed ASUS 1.0.7.8 firmware and although working ok still some few issues. I wanted to load your custom FW.
As a side note you and medsource have been great in helping guy specially newbies like me to get my router loaded, greatly appreciated.
Hope your FW has most of the options thought GUI as I have very little to no experince of Linux.
Great work thanks.
I've been a little distracted lately. Things will pick up when the weather gets colder in the northern hemisphere. Right now, I have the an image with a bunch of packages pre-installed. I haven't flashed it into a router yet, that'll happen shortly.

Does the current FW kernel have multicast support enabled?
Would it be possible to include it in the next release of your firmware, perhaps add also mrouted (which I am not able to find as IPKG package :-(
Thanks.

Hi K.C,
Just a word of thanks on your efforts for the community ;)
The Wl-700 has a copy function on front panel, where you can load data from USB key.
1. Is this functionality open to allow modification? do you know.
2. If so would you think it's technically possible to integrate a USB DVD player to back up DVD's onto the HDD.
I am willing to roll up the sleeves and start programming, willing to learn to help the community. May be it could be done with Ipk? what do you think?
If possible this would be on the wish list along with better support for Ushare and Bit torrent.
SliderMKH6

I want only a fully working download master with very good Bit-Torrent support. That is my goal. Question? if you make this i only need to give the router the new firmware update (nothing more?) and it works than?

Both items should be possible. Button presses can be trapped. In fact, I rerouted the power on-off button on my router to my own custom script to do a couple of things before calling the Asus routines.
- K.C.
Is it possible to get some error handling in rc.local or devide into more scripts?
I have experienced a couple crashes due to error in rc.local when I add a new line to startup a feature.
Is it possible to startup the core and then additional features after?
It should be possible to do via rc.local then additional with a cronjob that starts once at reboot. But it would be better to have all in one place and error handled in some way... like "on error resume next" handling.

Not so good:
Top priority:
Updated mt-daapd - too heavy, the better choise is uShare
Web server (lighttpd) - why for? not wanted for most users (use ipkg install for profs.)
Dropbear - the same. not for the most users.
My suggsestion:
1. Two interfaces for WAN (PPPoE/ppptp + LAN) - there are problem in this topic. if you try to create two WAN interfaces like this:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.xxx netmask 255.255.255.0 up, after PPPoE get reconnect, all settings for eth0 will be lost and you get only ppp0 interface still workable. This is great problem for users having LAN with PPPoE internet access: just only internet via PPPoE or just only LAN.
2. the MTU problem for white box. If you set MTU value via web interface, it's work only for your home network but not for whitebox, so to use white box as server you should set
ifconfig ppp0 mtu xxxx to make you box work properly.
P.S. kfurge, please contact me via PM, i just want to ask you some advise about LAN+PPPoE problems to make right way to solve this problem and i'm ready to share my lifelength for 1.0.7.8 firmware image
Hey, any news on the kfurge 1.0.7.8 image? :-)

Hello Kfurge.
Do you plan to inject Multicast support in your build?
If yes, how soon?
Many ppl badly need it...
Ive try to do it myself but im was stopped on rebuilding kernel :/ Too hard for me now :(
Thanks for answer.
I dusted off my 1.0.7.8 project and have a set of diffs against the Asus distribution that allow for a clean non-root build of the firmware. I'll be posting my progress regularly and try to provide intermediate drops for feedback. The first drop will be an equivalent of what I did for 1.0.4.6.
I'll be acquiring another router for testing and development purposes so I won't have to experiment with my "production" box. With this new box, I should be able to make some rapid progress.

I flashed my first custom 1.0.7.8 image and it seems to work OK! Once I confirm I can get optware packages running on it, I'll release it along with build instructions.

Can anyone confirm whether or not telnet access is open on the WAN interface by default with the Asus 1.0.7.8 firmware? I think it is, but my test router is not configured as a gateway.
If so, I'll modify it to only be activate it on the LAN side.

No, telnet is not open to WAN by default, tested it several times with webscanners.
ps.: have you close ftp to wan by default? ..its the only port open after disabling web, photoalbun etc.

can i ask for an idiots guide on flashing with this firmware release.. I'm not very confident with linux, but i can follow instructions! :)

Thank you.
Interesting, though... Utelnetd claims to be listening on all ports when it starts. Without the firewall enabled (which is default), I would tend to believe that includes both the internal interface (br0) and the external interface (eth0).
Do you have the firewall enabled? If not, could you please confirm that telnet works on the LAN side and is blocked on the WAN side? I would very much appreciate it.

Do you want to ftp from the LAN side? If not, just kill vsftpd.

You'll be able to flash it with the Asus flashing tools. No Linux experience necessary.

I tested it with enabled firewall of course (i didnt know anymore if its enabled by default or not). Without it there's no input-chain and telnet is open to wan, thats for sure. So you're right that is listening on all interfaces and attaching it to br0 only is a good idea and best setting anyway.
Do you want to ftp from the LAN side? If not, just kill vsftpd.
Yes, i want ftp from the LAN side, but there's no possibility to close FTP to WAN by the webinterface, so I (must still) manually delete the rule from the input-chain after every reboot

Thank you for the information. If it's possible, I'll keep my image from opening up this huge gaping security hole.
Regarding your manual delete rule, I have a similar problem where I want to add a rule for ssh access. You might be able to modify the following script to kill the offending line and plop it into rc.local, outside of any checks that limit execution to just at power-up.
#!/opt/bin/bash
lines=`/usr/sbin/iptables --list | /opt/bin/grep dpt:ssh | /opt/bin/wc -l`
if test $lines -eq "1"; then
iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
fi
FYI, rc.local gets called at boot-up and any time the configuration changes.

what do you have on your list so far?
jippie
what do you have on your list so far?
So far, from the original list, I have the following complete:
All of my patches applied (cpu load, entropy, etc.)
HDD spin down (fixed first, then configurable)
Workable command line environment (bash, ipkg, termcap, tz, busybox, default profiles, etc.)
Dropbear
Replacement BT client (MLDonkey)
Cron
Updated Samba
I think it'll be finished this weekend. The following will be coming in a subsequent release:
CUPS to replace printd
Updated mt-daapd
Web server (lighttpd)
Separate web interface for enhancements

are you able to add your list RRDTool Graphical IP Accounting tool? I think it would be very useful. Thanx.

Sorry, I don't think so. I think this is too specialized a tool to be in a general image where "ROM" space is precious. Fortunately, you'll be able to easily expand the basic distribution to add additional application packages.

Very impressive. Especially the updated samba will be nice, i have been trying to install a new samba and kill the old samba process on my router, and well, lets just say that was not really a success. As i wrote in the MLDonkey thread, i am really looking forward to your next firmware, and thanks for all your work - Asus should hire you ;-)

Yes... Very, very close. It's working pretty nicely. Once I get the BT ports ironed out in the other HOW-TO thread, I need to confirm that it's shutting down OK on the serial console, put some basic instructions on...
http://wl700g.homelinux.net/drupal/?q=node/134
... then upload.

Ok stupid question, does MLDonkey support BT encryption? i ask cuz I'm a comcast user, and we all know how they love un-encrypted BT traffic. :P

I haven't seen an option for enabling encryption, and i think encrypting the traffic would be pretty hard for the box's CPU ;-)

Maybe an other stupid question but is there any way to redesign the user interface?
I took a look into the 2.0.0.7 GUI and i really liked it (most of it:D ) - perhaps there is a way to "pimp" the GUI with a few gimmicks.
I know its absolutly low prio in case of what you/we are trying to archieve, but if its easy, i would offer help for a new interface.

It's not easy because all of the back-end processing is made up of unchangeable binary blobs. In addition, a substantial portion of the front-end is generated at compile time for different language support (at one point my router was speaking to me in Chinese!).
Perhaps you can help build an interface for the additional optware modules.

back2basic,
A couple of favors please...
1) I'd like to upload a .nas image and rc.local example to your drupal site and it is not allowing me to upload non-standard extensions. I noticed you were able to do this, can you please extend the same privilege to my account?
2) The drupal portion of the site seems legacy. Can/should/will my new 1.0.7.8 content be automagically mirrored somewhere to the main site?
3) Do you have enough bandwidth to support the downloads?
4) Is there a way to contact you on the drupal site instead of posting here?
Thanks.

Hi! Great job! Thks a lot!!

I just realized that there would be one cool feature to add to the firmware and I think it shouldn't be hard to implement.
Since wl700gE can download torrents, I don't run my PC on 24/7 anymore, but from time to time, I need to connect to my PC anyway.
Would it be possible to add some WOL program to the image, so we can wake PCs in LAN?
Thanx,

Can you explain how to create DualAccess on asus wl-700gE for dummy ?
Hello, I'm be having the Asus WL 700ge since it came out and I been having problems using it for that it said ever since. I'm a newbie about anything that its regarding Linux. I wanted to know if there a ultimate Firmware out that one could just install it and it work like it should have.
1.A good bittorrent
2.A good downloader for the people that use sites like Rapid Share
3.A easy way to hold a website
4.Easy to share files locally and over the internet
5.A better Multimedia Server for the Xbox 360 and the PS3
6.Share file by wifi
I just have simple needs.
This feature would be great:
An ability to boot custom kernel (and drivers) from HDD directly from bootloader or via kexec (I don't know whether it has support for ARM now) before normal boot continues. With normal boot when there is no HDD.
Hi,
I've been running KFurge's 1.0.7.8_02 firmware from the day he made it available. Thanks again KFurge.
I've recently installed an application on a pc behind the router that insists on listening on tcp port 80 (http). I've setup the port forwarding correctly for this and other ports. For some reason though the port 80 forward refuses to work.
My suspicion is that the admin web server is in the way but I can't work out how to change the port for the admin web server so that I can check.
I've also forwarded tcp port 81 to test that my forwarding is correct, so I'm sure it's something on the router that is in the way.
Apart from killing the watchdog and restarting httpd with a different port number, is there some way to reconfigure the port on which the admin web server will run?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello everyone
I have tried to install Neorouter server on KFurge 1.0.7.8_2 with no success. Has anybody else tried? They say it is made for Kamikaze. Should it work ok on KFurge? Thanks everyone.
Hi,
got this error, when trying to compile:
[root@WL700gE netatalk-2.0.3]$ ./configure
unset: not found
/
_basename: not found
expr: non-numeric argument
I also added to my profile already
PATH_SEPARATOR=:
CONFIG_SHELL=/opt/bin/bash
AWK=/opt/bin/gawk
export PATH_SEPARATOR CONFIG_SHELL AWK
which reduced some errors...but these above are still remaining.
I attached the configure-file.
thanks!

Configuration so that Xbox will not complain that NAT is Restricted, I have more than 2 Xbox'es and there is only 1 DMZ, so that wont work.
Easier reading logs of incoming and outgoing packets.
Easier editing opening ports (now have to delete entry and add new)
Enable name forwarding to an IP, (ie. abc.wl500g.info -> 192.168.1.123, def.wl500g.into -> 192.168.1.22)

Hi,
First things first, so I'm just sayin' hello, cause I've just registered :) I'm all new to linux based stuff, so forgive if my question is improper. And here it is: after entering PS command on my ASUS WL-700gE, i noticed that there are three instances of /user/local/samba/sbin/smbd and the same amount of /opt/bin/mlnet.lite -allowed_ips[...]. Needless to say, they eat up lots of priceless RAM on my hardware. Is this a proper situation? My router is running firmware mentioned in the title.
To clear things up, this is my PS output: LINK (http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/70/asusw.jpg)
Cheers!
PS. Sorry for my English :)
