Hi all,

I have been the happy owner of a WL500g unit for a few years. But since I bought an ethernet hard drive, my router started failing repeatedly. I don't know nor understand how the two could be linked but it coincides. If I remember well I had also upgraded to firmware 1.9.5.0 around this time.

When it fails, the router loses all connections, ethernet and wireless, and becomes unreachable. The power light blinks slowly.

After searching around the web, I thought perhaps restoring default settings and reinstalling the firmware could help. I've tried the web interface and the recovery tool, with various firmwares (1.9.4 to 1.9.5.0, and Oleg's latest) without any luck. I also tested clear_nvram and recover firmwares.

Now the router is unusable. It works for a few minutes at best, then loses all connections. The power light blinks quickly every 4-5 seconds, and each time I get and lose the connection immediately, as if the router kept rebooting again and again. It happens even if nothing is connected to it.

What is really weird is that the stability time seems to depend on how long i leave it unplugged. If I wait 1/2 hour or more, the router is stable for a few minutes, but once it starts going crazy, unplugging it for up to 1 minute before plugging back in only brings a minute of stability or so.

Can anybody help making a diagnosis? I'm afraid this could be due to some failing hardware, like a component overheating or something...

... So, should I buy myself a new router ? :(
