To revive a half-dead router?

Problem:
Failed firmware upgrade.
Result:
Router does not respond on 192.168.1.1. either in normal or restore state.
I used all tricks described here and on other forums wo success.
I do not have any idea how to access the device. Does it have an IP or not and which one if yes?
I do not want to use pin9 procedure because router seems to be half alive.
When connecting WAN port to ISP I have an external IP on LAN side.
It seems that router works in some kind of pass-thru mode.
Any idea how to solve this problem wo open the box?

you might want to retry to restore the original firmware using the Firmware Restoration tool provided by Asus on the CD (or on your pc, once you installed the sw)

Well, firmware upgrade (Asus original, 1973 and 1975 iirc) failed for me twice, leaving router half-dead with slowly flashing power led. I am convinced I did nothing wrong during process - just started upgrade via http pages, then waited >15 minutes to found router in comatose state. There must be something seriously wrong-fragile in this method of flashing, or I am just having bad luck. Box seems to operate as switch (pass-though) when it's in half-dead state.

In first case I succeeded to revive box using Asus firmware restoration utility. In other case restoration utility failed to recognize box and shortly after that my box stopped responding to ping (until next power off/on cycle to be precise). So then after moments of desperation I have discovered alternative-manual tftp recovery method and it worked nicely!

Some weeks later I've taken courage to get rid of Asus firmware and switch onto Oleg and I don't regret it by no means. Transition was smooth as silk since all my settings have been preserved and Oleg's admin http interface looks very much like Asus original + offers richer possibilities.
