I think it's the afterburner technology which is responsible for the larger range of the WL-520g. But many WL-500g's are also -unofficially- capable of using afterburner.

Custom firmware would not fit to 2MB of flash; 8MB of RAM is really a big problem. So, most likely this unit would not be supported by custom firmwares. I've no interest in this.
This is a cheap and useless device.
