Thread: What is the real speed of the USB ports?

What is the real speed of the USB ports?

Can once for all say that the USB ports on the wl500gP works at full USB2.0 speeds (ie 480Mbps = 60 MB/s) or there is a hardware bottleneck/bug that makes the speed to be much lower?

What would be the best method to test the speed on those ports?

This is the speed I got when I copied from the router to my computer. Trough wireless and SAMBA. But I get the same results if I do that trough CAT5 cable. I never managed to get over 2.2MB/s.

In the example: 695MB divided to about 470 seconds=1,47MB/s
    Pretty slow, right?

    Hi,

As you already replied in anothor post, there are several posts going on about this issue.

First of all, 480 mbit is a theoretical limit which you will never obtain.
you have a connection limit to the asus device of 100mbit (cable) to 54mbit (wireless).
reports have been made that the throughput of the lan ports is almost 100mbit and the wan port 50-80mbit.

the internal hardware isn't that fast that it can handle 480mbit to the harddrive.

I'm getting 3 to 3.5megabyte/second in my network environment (cable). Writing to the asus is usually a bit faster than reading from the asus.
if your samba (network sharing) is not running as you want it you might give it a higher priority: http://www.wl500g.info/showthread.ph...light=priority
It helped me a lot in the responsiveness of the system.

The ports are usb 2.0 spec. but that doesn't guarantee that those speeds will be obtained. It's the same as other usb 2.0 devices which never get the maximum datarates.. (think about memory sticks, webcams, and a lot of external harddrives 'cause you really need a really fast and empty harddisk to get 50-60 megabyte per second of real data)

All in all, considering the price of the device I think the performance is on par.

If you really want the speed your looking for expect to pay a lot more for such a device.

otoh. 1.47mb/s is a bit slow.. do you have a lot of running processes in the background, hurting samba performance?
