Can somebody explain me? Difference NSLU2 and WL-500g ?!

    Hi @ll,

I'm searching for an WLAN-USB-HDD-Box (with File/Print/DHCP/DynDNS/FTP-Support) -So, of course, I sooner or later came in contact with wl-500g as a solution :-) . But I also consider the NSLU2...

I know actually the WL-500g can also be an Access-Point *AND* has a 4port-Hub...the NSLU2 has none of the last too...

A lot of people really like the NSLU2...but I just can't figure out why ?! Is there anything the NSLU2 can do better/more than the WL-500g(x) ???

Is it Filetransfer-Performance ?? Is it more functionality ?!....I just can't see any difference ??!

Could somebody please enlighten me ?!

    cheers from berlin, germany

    Well, afaik, NSLU2 :
    - has no wlan interface
    - use an Intel Xscale CPU with 32MB ram
    - seems to have better performance than WLHDD (2.5MB/s for wlhdd streaming a file over http and 4MB/s for nslu2)
    - runs under Linux too and has a large developper community
    - has two USB2.0 port

    I have all four of them (WL-500g / WL-500g Deluxe / WL-HDD / NSLU2)

in fact I have to say I do NOT like the NSLU2 at all, too much hassle to get the darn thing working easy without modifying everything first (I only need FTP and Samba and telnet interface so I can wget things if needed)

    anyway few facts:

    WL-HDD max around 2 - 2.5Megabyte/sec
    1x LAN, 1x WLAN, 1x USB1.1, IDE 2,5inch enclosure

    WL-500g max around 500 - 800Kilobyte/sec
    4x LAN, 1x WLAN, 1x USB1.1, 1x WAN

    WL-500g Deluxe max around 1300 Kilobyte/sec
    4x LAN, 1x WLAN, 2x USB2.0, 1x WAN

    NSLU2 max around 5Megabyte/sec
    1x LAN, 2x USB2.0
beware! THIS DEVICE STAYS UNPOWERED UNTIL YOU SWITCH IT ON MANUAL (it using a 'soft'switch)
so in event of a powershort or something the device STAYS OFF, to prevent the device doing this you can modify it with some circuit or buy an (cheap) UPS (like I did)
