Please help... USB HDD doesn't work

    Hi there,

I've bought a HDD drive and an external HD USB2 box (Spire). It works perfectly under both Win XP and Knoppix but it doesn't work when I connect it to my WL500Gx.
When I reboot the WL with the disc connected, the LOG looks like this:

If I dosconnect the drive and connect it again, following lines appear in yhe log:
    Jan 2 18:03:48 login[126]: root login on `pts/0'
    Jan 2 18:04:40 kernel: hub.c: new USB device 01:02.2-2, assigned address 2

    Jan 2 18:04:41 kernel: usb.c: USB device not accepting new address=3 (error=-71)

There is one big 250GB FAT32 (formatted in Knoppix) partition.
I've tried it with both Oleg and Asus firmwares (latest ones). Nothing. I'm even not able to make FTP in the Asus firmware working. Am I doing something wrong? Or the HD box is simply incompatible with WL? How come that it is compatible with Knoppix? Are there older drivers in the WL firmwares?
    Any other ideas?

    Thanx a lot

Most likely you use usb hdd without a power supplyand wl500g could not provide enough power to it...
So, do you've power supply attached to the hdd?

  3. #3
Yes, of course there's a power supply... otherwise the disk would not work at all. It's a standard 3.5" hard drive enclosed in a USB2 HD Box (http://www.spirecoolers.com/enc.asp?ProdID=5).

Do I need to do something to 'enable' the USB device? Everything I've done is that I've flashed the firmware...

I've forgotten to mention that there's even not the device /dev/disks/* even the /dev/disks directory is missing. Is this a problem?

    thanks

    USB broken?

I've already tried to connect four USB devices (USB stick, card reader and a HDD in two different external boxes). Do you think that the USB controller can be broken at my WL?

    Thanx

When Oleg suggested that the WL500g cannot power the Hard disk sufficiently, me was referring to the fact that some USB hard disks draw all their power from USB.

If nothing works, then yes, perhaps you've hw problem with wl500g. If it's covered by warranty, try contacting techsupport to replace/repair the unit.
