Thread: is there anything in the firmware that would block ping to wireless notebook?

  1. #1

is there anything in the firmware that would block ping to wireless notebook?

    Setup:
Windows 7 x64 Ultimate desktop hard wired to Asus WL500gp router (WL500gpv2-1.9.2.7-d-r1445 firmware)
Several Bridged VirtualBox VM's running XP, 7, ubuntu server 10.04, Mint 9 and SuSE 11.2
Win XP Pro SP3 notebook with D-Link Airplus wireless network card.

No firewall or other security software currently running on either platform (at least for the duration of the test)

    Situation:
    Router is acting DHCP server
Clients are receiving correct addresses and additional parameters
Internet connectivity is available from all clients
Windows 7 sharing is set to Network type = work (not home group)
NetBT is disabled on all clients using smb over TCP

    What I can do:
I can ping the router and internet addresses from the wireless XP notebook
I can ping the Win 7 desktop and any VM from the XP wireless notebook
I can ping all devices from the router
All VM's and 7 can ping each other and the router as well as Internet addresses

    What I can't do:
I cannot ping the XP wireless notebook from either the Win 7 desktop or the VM's; it always returns a destination host unreachable error. Tracert resolves the name or the XP notebook but also returns a destination host unreachable.

From the above it would seem that something is blocking connectivity in a single direction (from the Win 7 box to the Win XP notebook) only but the router can ping the XP notebook.

Some fresh input would be most welcome, as this is beginning to drive me batty.

    Thanks

If "Set AP Isolated?" is set to yes in the wireless > advanced page, it could be a reason...

Are you pinging a hostname instead of an IP? are you using an other DNS server on the router than just auto?

    otherwise I wouldn't have a clue

    Thanks for the reply.

"Set AP Isolated?" was set to yes, but I changed it to No, save and restarted the router, but I still am unable to ping the notebook.

Earlier I 'hardwired' the notebook to the router and I was able to ping from the desktop successfully, so it's obviously a wireless issue

I am using the ip address and DNS is set to Auto

Can you reach a share created on the win xp machine?

When the notebook is connected via wireless, it's not visible at all from the desktop. When connected via cable, ping and shares are available.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I can ping the notebook from the router when it's connected via wireless.

If it helps, here are the wireless details:

    Wireless - Interface
    SSID: *********
    Channel: **
Wireless Mode: Auto - 54g Protection = No
    Authentication Method: WPA2 - Personal
    WPA Encryption: AES

    Wireless - Bridge
    AP Mode: AP - Only
    Channel: **
Connect to APs in Remote Bridge List? No
    Allow anonymous? No

    Wireless - Access Control
    MAC Access Mode: Disabled

    Wireless - RADIUS Setting
    Not Used

    Wireless - Advanced
    Enable AfterBurner? Disabled
    Hide SSID: Yes
    Set AP Isolated? No
    Data Rate(Mbps): Auto
    Multicast Rate(Mbps): 11
    Basic Rate Set: Default
    Regulatory Mode: Off
    Fragmentation Threshold: 2346
    RTS Threshold: 2347
    DTIM Interval: 1
    Beacon Interval: 100
    Enable Frame Bursting? Disabled
    Extended Mode: AP or WDS
    Enable Radio? Yes
    Date to Enable Radio: All

Time of Day to Enable Radio: All
    Radio Power: 17
    Enable WMM? Disabled
    Enable WMM No-Acknowledgement? Disabled

I tried changing Extended Mode in Advanced settings to Ethernet Bridge but I wasn't able to connect to the router from the notebook after doing so.

One other thing, after some further playing today I found if I pinged the desktop from the notebook and then immediately pinged the notebook from the desktop, it worked, well, for 2 minutes, the reverted back to destination host unreachable. I assume this is an affect of a cache entry, arp cache maybe? Whatever, at least it proves the notbook is reachable.

    Thanks

Does your laptop get ip on the wireless interface? If so can you publish the ip route configuration (route print) on the laptop?

    Hi Tamadite.

Here are the route prints from the notebook and the desktop.

Does unhiding your SSID make a difference?

  9. #9
Unfortunately, unhiding the SSID makes no difference

    Thanks

Then you should not search for the solution on the router but on the notebook. Packages on the same IP segement do not get routed. If the notebook is using MS-Windows check the firewall; I would first try this by deactivating the firewall on the notebook.

Thanks for the reply, Tamadite. Unfortunately, there is no firewall on the notebook. As I mentioned in my initial post, all security software was eliminated for the purposes of testing.

Perhaps I made myself a little less than clear when I said "hardwired". I should have qualified that statement by saying hardwired to the router, i.e. the desktop and the notbook are sharing the switch.

I confess I am new to wireless networking, it's not something I've ever needed before and in all likelihood I am doing something wrong. I just can't see where the problem would be, except with the wireless configuration, if, when using wireless there is no communication, yet when cabled there is. The only thing that changes is the communication type/method.

    Edit:

    Some additional info:

I connected the notebook to the router via both wireless and wired, when I attempt to ping the wireless address it fails when I ping the wired address it succeeds:

only but the router can ping the XP notebook.
Do it again as you showed on the last attached picture pinging both interfaces on the laptop (from 192.168.240.2?) and after that show the arp table of the host you are pinging from.

You are using a not common mask (255.255.255.240). Just to avoid odd environments, set mask 255.255.255.0 and check all hosts get the new mask including the router. "destination host unreachable" normally indicates "no route" therefore if all hosts are on the same IP segment no packet is to be routed.

    Hi Tamadite.

I made the changes suggested in your last post but was still unable to connect. Eventually, I ran with the 'Factory Defaults' option, at which point everything started working!

I guess something in the config I had created was borked, unfortunately, I doubt I'll ever know for sure what

Thank you for all your patience and help, it's really very much appreciated
