Thread: Any Support for the WL-530G ?

Question Any Support for the WL-530G ?

    Hi All,

Great site with tons of good information here! Hoping this hasn't been discussed, but I haven't been able to find anything via search.

I just picked up an Asus WL-530G .

I want to use it as a wireless bridge (essentially a game adapter for my TiVo). I haven't found anything specific to let me know whether I can use Oleg's custom firmware and which build to use if I can.

Does anyone know a little bit more about this thing? I can connect via telnet to the default sash shell and have poked around a bit, but don't really know what I'm looking for. I used the "free" command to confirm that it has 16Mb RAM. It has firmware 1.8.2.5 with a beta 1.9.3.9 available so naming-convention-wise it appears to be pretty similar to the WL-500 series.

I'm reluctant to install the new firmware as it specifically states that telnet is permanently disabled. No mention of SSH being in the base firmware.

Here is the output of "nvram show"

    Code:

You can't flash my firmware, as wl530g based on the different chipset - Marvel, instead of Broadcom.

    Unhappy Rats...

Alas, I expected the wl530g to have the same chipset as the other small routers from Asus. Hopefully this thread will help other people in the future.

The Asus info page indicates that this router can be used as an Access Point out of the box, but it doesn't seem to work that way, or at least not like I expect it to.

I guess that I could enable bridging via the brctl command, but don't know exactly how to do this. This is my current course of action. I'll post a followup if I figure it out.

Are there any other online sources of information for the wl530g?

Thumbs up wl530g 1.9.3.9 works with WDS

I loaded the latest firmware for the wl530g (1.9.3.9) and it is now working a-ok with a wl500gx in WDS mode (Oleg 1.9.2.7-3c) .

I have the wl500gx as my Internet router. Using the wl500gx in "Hybrid" and the wl530g in "WDS Only" mode.

    I had these problems:
    1. For some reason, the wl530g will disable the LAN ports also if you disable the WAN port. So... Leave the WAN port Enabled... it looks like the ports are still up, but there is no IP, so maybe the device is acting as a transparent bridge in this case (I haven't tried it again since I got it working because I'll have to reconfigure from scratch again.)

    2. Do not use a broken antenna!

    3. Make sure to manually change the LAN IP on the downstream device to be different unique (do not reuse 192.168.1.1). I used 192.168.1.2 for the wl530g.

    4. Disable DHCP on the downstream device (not strictly required, but makes it easier to figure out what is going on.)

Other than that, I used the standard hard-coded technique of setting up the MAC addr in each router.

    Working like a charm.

Thanks again to everyone who contributes to this board. The background info I got from here was invaluable, even though the specifics were a bit different.
