This is really printer/windows driver dependent.
USB printers, which are requiring firmware to be uploaded first will not work for sure.
Also, windows driver should not require direct access to hardware, so some are failing to work.
Built-in Microsoft Drivers should be safe in respect to this, but YMMV.
I've personal interest on this: does Canon LBP-810 or LBP-1120 works for anyone here?
As for bidirectional - well, probably this could help some printers to start working.
