I recently upgraded from 2 Mbps DSL to 4 Mbps. Unfortunately, on my computer (connecting with a 54g card) I only get a maximum of 2900 kbps downstream. It's really weird, here are the facts:

- Firmware Olec's 1.9.2.7-6b
- I get full 4 Mbps when connecting by network cable to the WL-500g
- Tried factory settings, no improvement
- Firewall and Bandwith Management are turned off
- Tried command top on ssh console: CPU load is <20%

And now what's really confusing: Downloading by WLAN from the Internet I don't get more than 2900 kbps, but when I download/copy from a locally via network cable to the WL-500g connected computer, I get >10 Mbps as it should be! So the problem only exists for the combination WLAN-DSL!

Does anybody get more than 2900 kbps when downloading from the Internet on a computer connected by WLAN to the WL-500g? With which firmware is that possible?

It was not related to the WL-500g, but rather to my Windows XP settings. If you experience the same problem, try the following:

- Does it appear on another computer connected via WLAN to your WL500g?
- Boot Linux on your computer (download a Knoppix CD if you don't have it installed), does the problem appear as well?
- Use VMWare to set up a virtual WinXP computer inside your Windows system. Does the problem occur inside the virtual system as well?
- Download two or three files and see if the combined speed exceeds the maximum speed you can get with one download.

For me the results were No, No, No, Yes. So it had to be caused by my WinXP installation.

I went here
http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
and downloaded the first tool from the list. Applied the "optimal settings" with highest speed to "all network adapters". Rebooted Windows and I could download at full speed.
