I own a HP PSC 1210 multifunctional printer scanner device and want to connect it to the WL-500g. It should be supported by asus standard firmware, it is listed as supported printer.

I've read the printer setup tutorial. The psc 1200 has a special total driver & software package, win xp can't install it on it's own and windows update neither. The only way to install te printer is to install the whole software package directly on one computer and plug the device in the computer afterwards so windows will recognize it.

What I've tried so far, changed standard firmware 1.6.something to 1.8.1.9 and the custom 1.7.5.9-5.

Runned the printer install tool from asus. Followed the method described in the asus user guide, but i have no remote port listed which I can select and have no idea how to install it, tried the asus tool and win xp cd but can't seem to get a remote port listed.

Following the printer tutorial on chupa, manaully changed the port to TCP/IP IP_192.168.1.1, manually configured to RAW mode on port 9101 tried the LPR mode with 'LPRserver'.

Everything always seems to be OK, the WL-500g does recognize the printer as a hp psc 1200 series and list it as online. The computer also seems to display everything alright; printer installed and selected as default.

The problem is when I try to print to the printer, the print job seems to be send to the printer but after a few second I get a 'ERROR - Printing' message in the status window of the printer, it doesn't print at all, nothing.
If I try to cancel the print job I get a 'Deleting ERROR - Printing' message'. The printjob can't be deleted and the title bar of the printer status window constantly flashes 'refreshing'. I can't delete the printer anymore and uninstalling the printer gets me a message that the driver is in use. Reboot will not help, the only way to get rid of it and try again is completeley unistall the hp software package with the clean up tool from HP.

I tried all the above described, on a laptop, wired, wireless, both and on a wired pc connected to the WL-500g. OS is Win XP SP2.

If anyone knows how to get it working i'll be really thankfull, I bought the asus especially for it's built in printserver functionality, and because my printer was listed as supported. I can't return either one anymore, i hope someone can help me solve this problem otherwise it will be a complete waste of time and money.

I have exactly the same printer and the same problem.
I have given up. I run Olegs latest firmware, also tried the raw printing but no success....

Because to use the scanning functionalities this printer has to be connected to a computer anyway I think to be able to scan... I use the Asus now for the Webcam and USB HD Fileserver now, this is enough :D

I have just used several hours to get HP PSC-1210 working on WL-500g USB port – and luckily it finally works.

I must admit I have “stolen” :o KWANies problem description since it was so well written and described my situation very well. I adjusted the problem description and send it to ASUS. And they have replied with this answer:

Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
My name is Penny and I would be assisting you today.

Please download the latest firmware v1.9.2.7(firmware_1927.zip) to update
and ASUS Utility (Eng_1300.zip) to install from ASUS website. The URL is:
http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=WL-500g&Type=All
Then please refer to the setup steps to configure and have a test again, the URL is:
http://www.asus.com/support/faq/qanda.aspx?KB_ID=100090108&SLanguage=en-us (tells about HP PSC-1100 but it’s OK).

Sorry to admit that this wasn’t enough.
1st evening I struggled with the firmware update and utility install. After some hours it worked.
2nd evening (tonight) I have struggled with setup and sharing of the PSC-1210 printer.

After following all the steps from ASUS and still couldn’t get WL-500g and PSC-1210 to work together I turned to the help possibilities in WIN XP regarding sharing printers through networks. This finally resulted in successfully printing from my portable Notebook (WLAN 11b) and my old PIII 500MHz Desktop PC (LAN).

Sorry that I can’t post a detailed solution – but the button line is – HP PSC-1210 works with WL-500g.

Could you please describe how you got the HP all-in-one running with the WL 500g? And can you still use the scanner function?
I work alot with Asus WL 500g and must say it's a unique device, but the printersharing is not really plug and play yet. I've got an Asus WL 500g with a HP 1219 all-in-one printer/scanner. As said in the opening post Windows XP needs the HP driver cd to install the printer. The printer works fine attached to the pc but it doens't even see the printer when it's attached to the Asus. When I pull out the USB cable (out of the pc) the printer disappears in Windows. So I'm not able to change the port to the tcp/ip port.
Advice anybody?

Attach printer to WL-500g
Run add printer on your WS, choose and configure port and VOILA! :)

I cannot add the printer if it's not attached to the pc. As far as I know it's only possible to install the printer with the HP cd. And when the printer is not connected to the pc the HP install software doensn't continu.

Add Printer
Choose local port
Choose custom port, configure port
Choose printer from list (it should be available in the list if you previously installed it locally)
if you can not find the printer in the list select "have disk", browse cd for the correct printer driver for your OS.

This will not install all the hp printer tools / monitor, however most of this only consumes memory and other resources and is useless anyway if you don't have bidirectional communication.

If you want to install from the HP cd you will at least have to add a properly configured custom (TCP/IP) printer port and make sure you firewall allows traffic for this IP / port before installing.
