Give us some more info please.

Do you have a lot of folders?
Are you accessing the drive through FTP or Samba?

*Sigh*

First of all: Read the FAQ, the HowTo section is NOT for asking questions.

Second: You should give info on which firmware you are using and and other relevant info.

Third: If I ask if you have lots of folders you answer with 'some' -> I want numbers

Edit: Ok, so you've added some info on firmware and filesystem, forget point two. Moved to questions and answers

is there any chance to get up the speed when i am browsing the folders on my ftp server (it is the same when i am browsing via the ftp og with samba)

or. do i have to change the filesystem on the disk.. ?

uhm.. what if you just type the folder you want to go to ?

I have a directory on my USB HD with 95 folders in it. When I log on to my router and do a 'ls' on the folder, it takes approximately 30 seconds for the command to complete.

Listing the directory using FTP it takes 34 seconds, I suspect SAMBA will be in the same range.

During the listing, the HD is very busy. I suspect that listing a directory is not very efficient over a USB 1.1 connection (the I/O probably uses a lot of roundtrips to and from the HD).

Subsequent listings take as long as the previous listing, so Linux does not cache this.

I'm using a 5400 rpm disk, 1.7.5.9 CR5 firmware and a 160Gb FAT32 partition.
