View Full Version : Range problem
I have problems with the range of the WL500G.
Its placed on the first floor. I cannot connect with my laptop (Acer Aspire 2012WLMI). I can see the SSID(not always), but cannot connect.
The wi-fi card in my laptop is an Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG
I already placed the router somewhere else, I thought maybe al my other devices(Monitor, printer, etc.) block the range, but this is not the problem I think.
a PC on the second floor with an usb wi-fi stick can't connect either. And just like my laptop it can see the SSID(not always)
Anyone knows the solution for my problem
Hi
Maybe your Cards are not compilant to the Asus, but this is unlikely to happen in Infrastructure mode ...
1 Floor can be too much if it hast Steal elements in it. The SSID proadcast´s maybe come through sometimes, but not enough to get a stable connection.
Dont rely too much on the proposed distances :).
When your cards are 54g try to limit the Asus to 11b mode only, this one usualy goes a bit further.
Greets
same problem
intel 2200bg and asus wl500g
connection loss. it works for me only in the room where the router is.
i got another notebook with an ovislink card... here it works fine.
so the problem is the compatibility with intel 2200bg and the asus router.
hope this woult be fixed soon
gonna write asus an email.

Edit: have you try with laptop in the same room than router?
And if the problem already occures, may be range is not the problem...
See this link: http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=1505&page=1&pp=15&highlight=2200
We have discussed intel firmware problems with MAV and jbrbv.
Hope this will help you...
Try different channels, start with the highest one available, and work your way down.
Select the channel that gives you the best connection, then try differen radio power settings (For old firmware, 1.6.5.3 with WL-500g the method described in this thread http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=12&highlight=increase+power works fine, I dont know for newer versions), start at 19mW and increase with 5 mW increments. From the optimal power level found this way try 1mW increments up and down to find the optimal power level. (If you reboot your WL-500g you will have to set the power level again manually)
During the process described above you may need to disable WEP or other encryption (Sure your WEP setting match?)
Try pointing the antenna of the WL-500g straight to the location of your laptop, make sure there are as few as possible disturbing physical barriers inbetween. Using the method described above a manged to get a stable 34 Mbps connection through two steel enforced concrete floors and a wall.
Good luck!!
