Use either [1] Client mode see:
http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=98&highlight=wl.o
Standard not supported by router, and you loose wireless capability of second box.
Or use [2] WDS mode, supported natively by box, and second box does not loose wireless capability. See http://my.router/Advanced_WMode_Content.asp

Well, this link is a bit obsolete yet... ;) Oleg implemented the Client mode into his customized firmware couple months ago (see http://wl500g.dyndns.org/ ) and now you can even find this function in latest official Asus firmware 1.8.1.7 as well.

Humm, you're absolute right, I just do not use it anymore simply because of the limitations of it. I like the Idea someone is doing in the WRT54G firmware; for client mode just eth1 and eth2 are (semi) swapped.
I figured out a simple way to set up our wrt54g to work in client mode and nat multiple computers.
Here is what I did:
Install Firmware satori 4.0 stable release.
turned on telnet
set 3 things in nvram
nvram set lan_ifnames=vlan0 vlan1 eth2 eth3
nvram set wan_ifnames=eth1
nvram set wan_ifname=eth1
nvram set rc_startup="/usr/sbin/wl txpwr 84"
nvram commit
This moves the wireless interface from the bridge to the wan
Then I disabled firewall and block anonymous requests.
Then Configure your "router IP" to whatever you want this to appear as on your access point.
The "Internet Setup" configuration isn't used.
I enabled and configured dhcp and made sure routing is enabled.
Set the Mode of the router to Client and set the ssid and ip of the access point you want to connect to.
I have been successful using this configuration with 5 users and testing indicates that it supports multiple computers.
One last comment I found a bug in Satori 4.0 firmware that prevents the router when in client mode from reconnecting to the access point after its been disconnected.
I had to recompile the firmware to make this work.
For more information on the bug see the post by pennerchen

I would go for the first option since WDS is (as far as I know) limited to 2Mbit throughput.... its slower and if you share this with multiple (heavy) users it can get hickups with loss of connection. The Client mode gives you max throughput with much better performance.
Ofcourse this WDS feature can be used in your benefit to give the other building "limited" internet connection so they can`t take all your valuable p2p bandwith :D

The high security feature (WPA-TKIP) is only possible on XP systems and you mentioned a W2K system too. W2K supports only WEP128 although I saw WPA-TKIP mentioned in the client manager of a SiteCom 100G PCI card under W2K but I didn`t test if this really worked.
WEP128 gives better performance anyhow... many client cards I`ve seen drop speed dramatically after switching to WPA-TKIP.
For extra security also turn on the "block SSID broadcast" option and use the MAC address Access Control List than you will be ok :)

I am using WDS with WRT54Gs and do not see any 2Mb/s limitation. Only thing is that the available wireless bandwidth is divided by 2.
With client mode NO WPA is available (quote from Oleg's page):
Starting with 1.7.5.6-3 custom firmwares contains limited wireless client mode support. Things which does not work includes WPA, web interface configuration (changes made from web interface is now ignored) and MAC address cloning. Please note what client mode stuff are only partially tested. In the client mode physical WAN port and WLAN roles are exchanged (i.e. WAN port becomes either LAN or DMZ depending on your settings).
OK i have new oficial firmware 1.8.1.7 in both asus.
1st asus in the building with internet i switch to gateway mod.
2nd asus i switch to client mod.
Is it OK?
OK
I flash one asus in the building without inet with oleg 1.7.5.9-5 firmw.
Then i switch to klient mode it look like ok.
Second asus i have in AP mode.
But i dont see (ping ) nothing.
What's wrong? Can you help me?
Thanks
If i understand you correctly you want to setup the 500g as a wireless bridge and use it as an AP too. If this is want you want, this is possible: both functions work at the same time.
Just choose in Wireless, the option Hybrid. It works fine, and i use it in this way to share my internet connection with the neighbours and (bridge) and as access point to my notebooks.
