Hi guys

after thinking about it for a while i finally plan to overhaul my network setup - it's just a little messy :D
while doing that i'm going to put a new firmware onto my 500gx... but my question is which one?
(i'd love to do this tonight when i get home from work at 6 (gmt))

what are the pro's and con's for olegs firmware against that of the openwrt project
what are the main differences etc etc.

all insight is most welcomed

Tim

With Olegs Firmware you will have finished it tonight (assuming you don't install numerous other applications), with OpenWrt it can take you much longer, depending what you want to do, and what release you choose.
I discarded Oleg FW on my WL-500gx in favour of OpenWrt Kamikaze (2.4.33.4 Kernel, self compiled), and my Wifi is still not working as expected.
But I think problems will be solved soon, and I won't go back for sure.
OpenWrt (Kamikaze) is much more flexible, has a newer kernel (2.4.33.4 or 2.6.17), and a lot of packages available.
I never thought of using OpenWrt white russian, because my first attempts where on a Netgear WGT634U, which is not supported by white russian.
It may be easier to use because of ready-to-install images, but development is done on kamikaze only from now on (final version of white russian (RC6) released).

Current functions on my WL-500gx: real DMZ for my webserver via separate VLAN, lighttpd with local web pages (rrdtool statistics) and reverse proxy functionality, squid proxy server, pure-ftpd, ssh server, pptp VPN server, tor daemon, DHCP & DNS server (dnsmasq), cisco VPN client (vpnc)

I think of configuring squid as a transparent proxy server.

If have some basic linux knowledge and / or experience with custom router firmware I would definitely go for OpenWRT. Just load setup defaults in your current firmware and flash/load the RC6 firmware.
If on the other hand you have limited or no linux experience, I would advise you to start out with Olegs firmware and try this for a while to get an idea of what you are doing and switch to OpenWRT later.

thanks for a quick response guys!
i'm pretty experienced with *nix and my main interest with upgrading is gaining flexibility...looks like OpenWRT is far more suitable.
i thought this would be the case...the whole package system along with the developed community seemed a winner...and should have the info on topics should i need it.
now to plan what i want it to do :D

thanks again
