Hello,
I buy asus wl-500g and I want put wl-500g in client and repeter.
I put in AP mode, select hybrid, put same ssid and channel in both.
Also put mac address of router/ap surecom.

but in PC5 and laptop canīt ping 192.168.1.3/4
What I have wrong?
Thanks

perhaps firewalling?
can you access the internet etc..?
Thanks for your reply.
I can access internet in PC1 and PC2
Laptop and PC3 have no access the internet or canīt make ping 192.168.1.3
No firewalling.
How can I know if hybrid is working?
Hi there, does anyone know if it's possible to create a bridge between different Asus Acces Point models?
I'm willing to create a bridge between a WL-300G and a WL-500G.
I'm also interested in a bridge between a WL-520G and a WL-300G.
Who knows if this is possible, please let me know. Thanks very much!
Hi everybody!
I have 2 APs ASUS 500gx & MSI RG54GS2, both support WDS, but when I set up them to the WDS bridge, they donīt work:(
I really donīt know, where is a problem, I think both APs have the right setting for WDS..
1. Asus WL500g Deluxe
SSID: ANY2
CH: 5
Hybrid mode
In remote bridge list MAC of the MSI (I ensure many times that it si correct one)
Operation mode: Home gateway (I tried the router, and AP too without difference)
No MAC control, or encryption security enabled..
2. MSI RG54GS2
http://www.pltnici.wz.cz/AP/msi.gif
SSID: ANY2
CH: 5
Gateway mode only
In WDS list MAC of the ASUS WL500g Deluxe
No MAC control, or encryption security enabled..
Situation on my LAN should looks so:
MSI RG54GS2----[wlan]-------Asus WL500g Deluxe--------[wlan]----MSI RG54GS2
Before I bought Asus WL500g Deluxe, my LAN worked properly (2 APs MSI RG54GS2 in WDS bridge)
I have tried 3. versions of FW for asus (WL500gx-1.9.2.7-7b, WL500gx_1950, WL500gx-1.9.2.7-7d.trx) no one works..
In the status log of the MSI gateway is: "Disassociated: 00-15-F2-6A-E0-9E because RX deauth req".. 00-15-F2-6A-E0-9E is MAC of the ASUS, so that means, they see each other, but MSI wonīt associated ASUS.. Maybe bad net topology?
Thanks for all suggestions, I am a newbie in that..

Hi,
try to rename the asus device.
i allways had diffenrent names for all WDS devices.
Thanks for your suggestion,
You mean change the SSID? I tried to change many options on my asus device, include different SSID & LAN IP address without result :( Always the same answer of the MSI Gateway system log : "Disassociated: 00-15-F2-6A-E0-9E because RX deauth req"
It is possible, that these two devices are incompatible? But I donīt think so..

Hi all, got some noob questions!!
I've tried without success (over abour 6 hours, including about 2 hours trawling this forum) to extend my already present WLAN based around a KCORP 575 Gold to my new WL-500gP, having similar problems to others where it seems the ports are not all in the same bridge as the "Operation Mode" option claims! They are both in the same subnet, same SSID, etc but from the PC connected to the KCORP I can't ping a device on the ASUS, or ping the ASUS itself.
My question is, if I replaced the KCORP wirless router with a 2nd 500gP, would that make things a lot easier and stop me pulling my hair out?!
I know a diagram always helps, so here's what I have at the moment and what I think might be easier with a 2nd ASUS!!
If anyone has any ideas on whether this is a potentially good plan, or any other ideas, I'd most appreciate it! :D
Thanks in advance!

It might be a stupid proposal, since I don't know your physical setup (i.e. what distances you want to cover):
Why don't you just connect the HD to the wl500gP and get rid of the KCORP device?

Hi elaerion,
Sorry, I should have mentioned that bit! The whole point of this is that my ethernet modem and 2nd access point are on different floors, an I don't want to drag wires from the ground to the 1st floor!
Cheers, J
Hi,
afaik wl-500g premium can only act as a access point and can not be used to extend current wlan. So it will not help if you buy a new 500gp access point.
please, correct me if Im wrong..

I fully agree, from my experience the only which will work properly is an specific "range extender". Popular models are from US-Robotics, Zysel or D-Link - I only have experience with US-Robotics, it works with the wl500gp router.

Oh ok. I should point out that the USB HDD is actually my HDD-based PVR, and my PVR and TV are on a floor above my ADSL point. Is there anyway to wirelessy link them up like the diagram above using the WL-500gP? Including any methods that may requier extra kit?!?

If I understand it correctly, your DSL Modem and your PVR are fixed. So the only variable elements would be the KCORP device and the wl500gP.
From what I can see, the only way to link them up wirelessly, is to use a wireless accesspoint that works as a bridge.
I haven't tried that out yet myself, but afaik this is the only way to do it, without dragging cables.
You could use the ASUS wl330 just as an example.

I have tried setting up the ASUS with the WDS features, but then I realised the other end (the KCORP) doesn't supoprt this feature (well, theres no mention of it in the manuals or any of the settings menus). And for that reason, I thought maybe 2 WL-500gP units would work as I know they both support it. Maybe I need to read up more on wireless technology in general!
On the ASUS I have been setting the Operation Mode to Access Point, giving the IP Config - LAN setting a static IP in my already present WLAN, then setting all the Wireless - Interface bits to the same as my already present WLAN (i.e. SSID, channel, no encryption for now) then the Wirless - Brdige I have set to Hybrid, with Connect to APs in Remote Bridge List to yes, Allow anonymous to yes (for now) and adding my already present WLAN router's MAC into the Remote Bridge List.
My already present WLAN router (the one made by KCORP) has no options for displaying its ARP table or doing ping tests, so its not very helpful in troubleshooting!

Hmmm, I think I definitely need to read up more on wireless technology and terminology. I'm ok with networking in general terms, subnets bridges and routers etc, but wirelesss is fairly new as you can probably tell.

Hi,
I connected two WL500gP in WDS with WPA2 encription. I read here about some problems wtih that.
If its interesting, I'll write details here.
Best regards to All.

Hi,
yes i'm very interesting. Please send the details and outputs from this commands:
# wl wsec
# wl wpa_auth
# nvram show (you can remove passwords, keys and macs)
thanks
Best regards
Hi, tomekmik.
You know, it is possible to connect two 500gp together in WDS with WPA. But it worked only next morning after i tried unsuccessfully all the evening. And it worked only< as i think, after switching them off from the power. So, when I switched them on in the morning, it suddenly worked. But...but when there was a very short power failure in my house few days later, they lost communication. I had to disable encription and enable it again, reboot them and then they worked again.
But i definitely noticed, that also, when i switch off and back on a surge adapter, in which first 500gp and a cable modem (to which its connected) are plugged in, 500gp looses connection to the internet. So, i have to reboot it separately, and then it works.
So, unfortunately, there is a dependence from power in two cases:
1. connection between two 500gp with encription enabled,
2. connection between a modem and a 500gp, connected to it.
My firmware version is 1.9.6.9. Dont know, may be older firmware is more stable to power losses.
Both routers are in default - gateway modes. On both i left DHCP server enabled. And each has its own SSID. But, i also tried another combination:
first router in gateway mode with dhcp enabled. Second in AP mode without dhcp. And both had one SSID.
In all cases, they are unstable.
What you think?

hi,
i thought you are use the Oleg firmware.
How do you force the routers to use WPA2 and not WPA?
I'm use the version 1.9.2.7-7b but on wl-500g with WDS-WPA.
In this version WPA and WPA2 is enabled but my routers use only WPA and not WPA2.
Maybe you can try it with the Oleg firmware. I have only one WL-500gp for testing. :(
On the Comman Line you can set WPA2-Mode with:
# wl wpa_auth 128
The default is 132=4+128=WPA+WPA2
Hello everybody,
I tried to figure out my problem without bothering U - but i failed
I'm running a FritzBox7050 as Router and a WL500-gp as AP (AP mode) ind WDS mode. My internetconnection is 2000MBit DSL. no matter which laptop I use (my one, brother, friend) my WLAN connection through the WL500gp is extrem slooooooooooooooooooooooowly.
Connected to the Fritz7050 the WLAN has a DL-rate of about 250kByte/s
connected to the WL500gp it is in the range of 10-40kByte/s
What is wrong about the WL500gp?? Or is this the maximum this box can do??
Thanks for your help!!
Hat sich gelöst. Zumindest zieht er eben ordentlich. Hab die channels mal durchgetestet und der 2er tuts nun. Evtl. hilft das ja allen mit ähnlichen Problemen

I already see some article that it's work in WRT54G, but the signal it's to low :(
Any experince with Senao, Fulbond, Dlink with "High power"??
Thank you

As I already mentioned in another post: It is really hard to make routers of two different manufacturers communicate with each other via WDS - at least as long as you want a realiable encryption like WPA or WPA2.
The problem is, that WDS is a standard, but the implementation is up to every manufacturer. So the only way is in most cases to try it without any encryption or to use a (crossover) cable.
But maybe this is a good chance to start a WDS compatibility list - like the webcam compatibility list - to see which routers of other manufacturers work together with the Asus routers?
Hi
I want to connect my WL500G DELUXE to my 2Wire 2700HG home Gateway as a wireless access point so I can access my Topfield PVR. The ASUS requires entries in the 2Wire wireless set up for WDS but it doesn't support WDS. Is there a workaround?
Thanks
I've been working in two days to make two WL500g talk in a WDS. After hours reading here on wl500g.info I've found several solutions to the problem, but it seems that not all are working. Maybe it's boardrevision og corerevisions that differs how the firmware handles the WPA, I don't know.
Now it seems that my config is finally working.
According to other posts on this forum firmware supporting WPA-PSK TKIP and WDS is 1.8.1.7-3, 1.9.4.0b and 1.9.5.0b. I've tried them all, but none of them were working at first.
* Both routers have hybrid mode.
* Both routers have each others mac adress under remote bridge list.
* Both routers have static IP.
* Both routers are in Access Point operation mode (use seperat DHCP server).
* Both routers have the same channel (9).
* Both routers have same encryption settings (ofcourse).
I've been trying to have different SSID, but when I finally got over this page (http://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=3090) when I "googled" the problem, the problem was solved!
When telnet to my router and typed this
(I've removed my WPA key and replaced with stars)
Telnet command: cat /tmp/nas.lan.conf
nas -P /tmp/nas.lan.pid -l br0 -H 34954
-i eth2 -A -m 2 -k ******** -s MELING -w 2 -g 0
As described on the link above the WPA will NOT WORK with different SSID because it's a part of the WPA encryption.
When I sat the same SSID (in my case; MELING) on both my routers, it worked instantly!!!
I hope this may solve the problem for others as well.
Other posts (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?p=17824#post17824) on the forum here said that the SSID should not matter for WDS because it's only useing the MAC to connect to each other.
But the WPA seems to do matter about the SSID.
Anyone else have some comment to this?
I'll try it tomorrow
I just hope it works because I really need that...
and what about Hibryd mode? does it work with it or it works only with WDS
thanks
This one is posted also under the WL500g Premium forum, but made a copy here where it really belongs.

Hi,
I'm also using wds with wpa (AES). I just tried the same SSID and it works perfectly. My only problem is the transfer speeds:
wl-500gp connected to a ADSL Modem:
connects a xbox (wired) and a Notebook 1 (wireless)
with wds
wl-500gx
connects a PC (wired) and a Notebook 2 (wireless)
By example between PC and Notebook 1 speed stays at 150 Kbytes/s
Configurations:
* Both routers have hybrid mode.
* Both routers have each others mac adress under remote bridge list.
* 500gp with static IP and 500gx get from DHCP (from 500gp)
* 500gp in Home Gateway mode and 500gx in Access Point operation mode.
* Both routers have the same channel (10).
* Both routers have same encryption settings (WPA-AES).
Anyone know any way to improve the speed with wds and 2 Asus 500?

Hi there,
I tried to setup WDS with my asus 500g and 300g. The 500g is connected to the WAN the 300g should act as a bridge. Both have newest firmware versions.
Both have the same SSID, same channel, same WPA-PSK (AES) password, 500g has dhcp enabled, 300g has not, both have WDS mode hybrid, both have the bridging MAC address of the corresponding AP in their list, both have connect to AP in the list + allow anonymous == on, ssid is not hidden, 500g runs @Home Gateway operation mode, 300g runs @Access Point operation mode.
I can loopkup the 300g but cant obtain an IP if i connect to it. When I connect to it using a static manualy asigned IP, i can reach it under 192.168.1.1 so I assume it doest get an IP for itself. Do I have to tell the 300g somehow to get an IP address from the 500g and to route through other IP requests?

Hi,
with no security enabled I can successfully connect together my two wl500gs. The one connected to WAN runs the DHCP, the second one gets an IP for itself and forwards DHCP requests of clients as it should.
I do not see the routers listed in Status&Log/wireless (router is not even listed and especially not authorized) however in dhcp leases i can find the second router.
So everything runs fine besides no entries in status in unsecured mode.
As soon as i enable WPA-PSK TKIP+AES nothing works anymore. Second router doesnt fetch itself an IP and hence all clients behind the second routers are not even able to connect to it as they also get no IP.
Both run 1.9.5, same ssid, same channel, macs assigned in the bridge menu. same WPA-PSK properties+pass.
any help?
how can I open that shell again where i can type in wl commands. Is there a way to find out what happens? (whether the routers at least try to communicate and what fails?)
thanks heiner

up. why doesnt it work?
do i have to try ddrwt?
Hi ratzfatz,
I use Olegs firmware but I also have the same problem to get a wds-bridge with WPA-PSK run. But finally I found a way.
Set everything up in the Webinterface except wireless lan Access-Control list (Mac-Filter) and Remote-Bridge-List (Mac-Filter between WDS Clients).
Open a telnet or ssh session on the router an try the following commands:
Setup Mac Filter with:
wl mac xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx yy:yy:yy:yy:yy:yy
where xx is the mac of the other wl 500g router and yy one or more wireless lan clients seperated by a space.
Setup WDS-Bridge with:
wl wds xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
where xx is the mac of the other wl 500g router.
You have to do the same with the other wl500g router, but then you have to use the macs from the first router. :)
I did a bash-script which is running in my post-boot script:
!/bin/sh
wl wds xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
sleep 2
wl mac xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
Best regards
mmX
I remember ASUS was changing the firmware, so that only two WL-500g Premiums were able to build up a network in WDS/ bridge mode.
Did they change it finally?
I am trying to use 4 Routers. One is providing the internet connection and forwards it to the other 3, which are working as APs.
Will that work?
Thaks, I appreciate your help :)

I'm a newbe in this things.
I've a simple question, to make WDS with a WL500G with other router. It's possible to this with any protection? Only MAC ADDRESS it's not suficient, and if i make any other else, the WDS don't work, why? Can anyone help me?

go to the 2nd router and ping the first one. If the answer it's not positive, the bridge is not working

I would say: yes can work, depending to your config and kind of connection between the routers.
I've usually (not yet, because my Asus died and I've to configure all again) up to 3 Routers in a WDS connection.
Ground floor: Inet-Gateway is my Asus
Garret: Wrt54gl ddwrtV23SP2 with 2x HGA7
summerhouse: Wrt54gl ddwrtV23SP2 with a self made biquad, about 400m
(I tried several self made antennas, most of them are just garbage)
My config works pretty good and stable, even when it's rain
I do not know, how many routers can be connected directly to your Asus, but I think, its more a question of physical limitations due to the fact that a wds connection cuts down the transfer rate to a half. Hence, it does not make much sense to me when let us say 5-10 routers are connected to just one. When really necessary, isn't it much better to use a protocol of a mesh network?
Hi, I hope I came to the right place since I like to equip both my 500s with DD-WRT23v2 firmware to set up my network configuration as shown in the drawing. At this very moment I am using the Davolink only, but it will change soon :). My setup is described below, when all works properly I will move on to enable USB(2) support on both Asus routers, I guess I will have to equip both Asus 500g routers with either the mini or nokaid to enable USB support (also for optware). I noticed "Assign WAN Port to Switch" did not work for the Davolink, but maybe I was to impatient and will sort this out later...
1. TELE2 Davolink modem (192.168.1.1/5) should be functioning as a dumb modem, so no NAT, no wireless and no DHCP, also the Asus 500g will be connected via LAN directly to this Davolink modem, possibly via WAN port as said earlier.
2. Asus 500g (192.168.1.6) should be functioning as a WLAN (bridge) to Asus 500g deluxe thus excluding Asus 330g. Also port forwarding (NAT), no DHCP and SID "TEST" and last but not least two wired PCs.
3. Asus 500g deluxe (192.168.1.7) should be functioning as a WLAN (bridge) to Asus 500g, also the Asus 330g should be able to connect to this router. No port forwarding, DHCP server enabled, SID "TEST", one wired PC and USB2 printer support.
4. Asus 330g (192.168.1.8) should be functioning as a WLAN client connecting ONLY to Asus 500g deluxe to "TEST" and one PC enabled
5. Both my Nokia 95 and laptop should be able to connect via DHCP to the Asus 500g Deluxe
