Ok, finally using the wireless part of the 500G with an Asus WL-138G on a second PC, latest drivers from Asus site + Windows 98. Some strange symptoms that might just be due to my lack of understanding of 802.11x, so any comments appreciated!
1) *Always* flashing activity LED once 98 has booted and connection with WL-500g established. ifconfig on the router however does not appear to show any data transfer, nor does "frames sent/received" increase on the Asus WLAN Connection monitor (it _does_ increase normally when I know i'm transferrring data). I'm guessing 802.11g doesn't continually send status/monitoring packets, so anyone any idea what's up? Behaviour doesn't change if I switch from "continuously awake" to max power saving - the only way to stop the flashing is to break the connection, eg changing ssid.
2) Signal seems to vary in 40-50% range with one ceiling in the way (at angle, so vertically polarised antennas should be ok..) and data speed reported to vary frequently from 6 to 48mbps. Actual data transfer appears to be in the 10-15mbps range. Every so often, the connection will drop entirely however.
I think I find a PCMCIA card from someone to test and check what to blame!
