Hi,

I just bought my 500g a few days ago and discovered some problems. Some of these seems to be discussed here (WAN port dies, etc).

I now wonder, if it's possible zu to use the 500g as WINS Server in Router-Mode, accessible from the WAN side?

I would like to use a configuration like this (view with monospace font):

WAN
|
|
|(dynamicaly assigned)
Router A (FVS318)
|(192.168.4.1/27)
+------+------+------+
| | | |
| | | |
| PC PC PC
|
|
|(192.168.4.2)
Router B (WL 500g)
|(192.168.4.32/27)
+------+------+
~ ~ | LPR Printer
~ ~ |
Wireless WebCam
PCs

The Router A is my ISP gateway and uses NAT. The Router B is an internal Router, NAT is disabled. The Router A has a static route for the subnet behind the Router B (with the Router B's IP as gateway). Router B also serves a LPR printer and a WebCam.

The problem I have is:
- for Windows Network browsing I need a WINS Server (accessible from WAN and LAN side)
- The WebCam needs to bee accessible from WAN side without router login

Another idea would be to use the 500g in AP mode. But then I can't use the WebCam and the LPR printer.

I do try to set up a vpn between two locations and would like to use similar configuratins (both sides coupled with the FVS318 IPSec VPN and on both side a 500g for serving WebCam, Printer an wireless clients.
In this configuration, the slow WAN speed should not be a problem.

Is this possible with the 1.5.7.9 or modified firmwares?

Any help welcome...

With kind regards,
Stefan

WINS server is only available in custom firmwares.
Also, using the custom firmware you could launch printing, webcam stuff in AP mode by manually configuring command execution.

Hi,

thanks to Oleg for the answer. I will try to get the custom firmware into my 500g. But how do I do this?

The things I would like to use from this box is only:

- use it as an access point, don't need it as a router
- use it as an WINS server as I do need on in my home network (and it seems a good idea for me, to use a low power consumption device that is running all the time for this)
- use it a a printer server (same reason as above)
- use it for a web cam (which should be accessible without a password)

Get this all running would be ok for me, I don't need the other stuff.
:-)

I'll try it ... would be good to have a how-to to explain how to flach the firmware and how to start the things needed....

With kind regards,
Stefan
