View Full Version : How to connect?!?
Hi guys,
First of all great forum! I'm new here and it looks very good.
Second if I'm not posting this in the right forum or break the rules in any way I'm very sorry.
I'm living in Holland and I'm using Chello cable internet.
I've got the Chello Light version.
Internet works great and recently I bought an Edimax Broadband router.
Works perfectly! I can get 2 pc's online at the same time (probably more but I only have 2 :) )
Now I got a new laptop with WiFi and wanted a W-Lan.
So I bought the Asus wl-500g. But I'm not having any luck...
I removed the Edimax router.
Cable modem -> wl-500g -> cable to my dekstop pc & WiFi to my laptop
But on both machines I dont have internet! it can find my w-Lan but internet does not work!
I did the quicksetup in the admin page.
Ofcourse before I tried it I double checked if my internet actaully works.
Afterthe wl-500g didnt work I tried my Edimax again and internet works...
I'm pretty much lost what to do.
I hope someone can help me out.
I'm using the latest Asus firmware 1.7.5.6
And I tried Antiloop's guide (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?threadid=10)
Cheers

Hi, i'm french... But i think i have few things that would help you...
First you should check that you have configured your Asus router to use PPPoE since most internet providers... If this does not work, try other connection modes.
To help us identify your problem could you post your asus log file?
Best regards....
Thanks for the reply!
I dont think my provider uses PPPoE but ofcourse I will try that!
(chello uses DCHP without any pass/usernames. Just plug and play..)
I will post the log tonight (not home right now)
Cheers

One thing you could do is look how your other router is configured, and try to set up the same config in the WL500....
I'm asking myself how does chello know which user is connecting to their network if they do not have username/password?
I think they know it by Mac Address...?
Never used a pass/user in my 5 years of Chello...

UPC uses a cable modem. The ID of that box identifies your subscription level, much like how the cable TV system works.
In Norway, you may not move the cable modem between different locations (at least not locations connected to different UPC centrals). I tried this once, and the cable modem stopped working. They lock a cable modem to a specific connection central the first time you connect it to their network.

Thanks for the reply.
But does this mean it wont work for me?
Because a normal router DOES work...
I had problems until I got the setting right on mine. My provider uses PPPoA, which the ADSL modem deals with.
The WL500g has 4 different settings, one of which is PPPoE, and I think this is the default. However, you probably want to set it to the final setting, which is just to use DHCP and not need a username or password. I had all sorts of problems, some relating to settings on modem, and some to do with ISP, but it's all working perfectly now.
Or I suppose you could always try connecting it to your other router, and connect that to your modem, as an experiment...
Good luck!
Dominic
Did you already try to reset the cable modem? My own modem (Multikabel) locks to the MAC-address of the NIC it is connected to and if you plug in to another computer/router you have to switch it off for some minutes and then power it up again so that it sets itself to the new MAC-address it is attached to.
Hope this can help you..

Guys, thanks for the replies.
Gandalf I will give this a try later on.
Thanks!
Another problem...
Got home today and tried to get into my admin page but no luck.
I simply can NOT connect to 192.168.1.1
So I cannot change any settings :(
My edimax wired router still works perfectly
I got the admin page working again but still no internet.
I tried the solution of Gandalf but no luck...
I will attach the status log, maybe someone can help me out...
Thanks
p.s. I just installed Oleg's firmware, latest one c5
No internet

ok..
you can do a few things.
as i can't find the modem you are using, so I assume you have a Motorola SB4x00 or similair
if you have one: push the reset button (it's a very small hole at the back of the motorola) be sure you're edimax is not connected anymore but your wl500g is. after you have pushed the reset button it takes a few minutes and your modem should connect again.
second thing you can do is to give the wl500g the same mac address as your edimax router
Hey m8,
I just checked and I have a Motorola SB5100e
There is no reset button it.
I will try and shut the power down and than reboot with the wl-500 connected...
Will let you know later on
This is my edimax systemlog.
Maybe you can find anything?
Wl500g does not get a lease from your modem. On the other hand you modem indicates that someone with IP 192.168.2.100 use lease? Who is it? Is this you PC? I suppose your modem configured to provide static leases only or so. So, the problem is in your modem. Another possibility is that your wl500g is not connected to your modem via WAN port, but from LAN is this correct? Please describe in details your setup - i.e. how you've connected everything.
Another funny thing - your modem also linux based as seems. :D

You have to put the mac address of your previous router in the wl500g otherwise it wont work. This mac address is locked to your modem and is the only one that works.
You can also call the chello helpdesk and say that you have a new network card/router. They can reset the modem so it will accept the mac address of the first device you connect (which should be the wl500g). After this the wl500g only works and your old router does not.
I would go for the first option so you can use both routers :)

Quoted from another site perform this and i'll be 99% sure your WL500g will get an IP.
The Motorola SURFboard SB5100 does not have a pin hole that allows for a "hard reset" of the modem. In order to "hard reset" (clear the modem of all settings and TFTP config file) the modem, follow these instructions:
1. Open a web browser and go to: 192.168.100.1
2. Click the "Configuration" option at the top
3. Look near the bottom of the page. There should be a button that says, "Reset All Defaults". Click it once.
4. Once the page refreshes, click the last button at the bottom called, "Restart Cable Modem"
5. Provided you don't have RF signal/coaxial line issues or if the cable provider isn't experiencing technical problems at the headend or elsewhere, the modem will reboot and reacquire all settings from scratch.
Note:
Resetting the cable modem to its factory default configuration will remove all stored parameters learned by the cable modem during prior initializations. The process to get back online from a factory default condition could take from 5 to 30 minutes.
Thanks thanks thanks!
Great to see some help here guys!
Appriciated!
I will give this all a try tonight.
@Oleg
This is my setup:
sb5100e (cable modem) -> UTP cable to the wan port of the wl-500g -> UTP cable from LAN1 to my desktop pc.
Who is using this IP 192.168.2.100?
Another funny thing - your modem also linux based as seems. :D
I'm not into Linux myself, but is this possitive? Think so but what can I do with it?

Nothing. Just a fact. :)
Who is using this IP 192.168.2.100?
I dont have a clue?
How can I check that?
I've no idea. You need to check your modem config pages. This could be both modem address and your PC address.
Probably you need just to clone your PC MAC address to wl500g and everything will start working just fine.
Think I did that...
I will try it again tonight than.

the 192.168.2.100 could be your modem too.
i'm not familair with any motorola modem at all, i only have a little experience with the sb4200e
I tried the method which Antiloop discribed.
Resetted the motorola modem and for now it works :)
Didnt try wireless yet...

Thanks for helping!!

for the people who want to know why this works for panja:
the SB5100e in combination with chello, turns into a router with maximal 1 dhcp lease. after reset this list is cleared.
and because chello registers the modem connected and not the mac addresses when using motorola(probably all docsis based modems) modem, you don't even have to register again with your network.
if some future user is having the same problem and not willing to reset (easiest way), he can just clone the MAC address of the device previously used to connect with the internet.
Hey m8,
I need to some help with my laptop now.
Wireless it doesnt work.
I can see the network but cannot connect...
I just tried it with an UTP cable in my laptop and that works.
I have internet on 2 computers now
Internet finally works wireless!
I added a host name in IP CONFIG -> WAN & LAN
But it only works without WEP....
it workksssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!
128bit WEP!!!
Cheers guys
